Hell man, I don't think I have listened to Dawn Patrol since the
late 80's, maybe early 90's. The album itself peaked with the
opener, the kick ass scorching Don't Tell Me You Love Me.
Awesome song and still one of my all time favorite songs by
Night Ranger. After this comes Sing Me Away, which I absolutely
love, but it's not as heavy or hard as the previous song. It's
more melodic than anything else when comparing the two. The rest
of Dawn Patrol is pretty hit and miss and very uneven. But
what's interesting about it is that even though there are a
couple of filler, throw away songs here, within these songs,
they have rip roaring solos by Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis that
need to be heard.
One of the things that I hate is having to listen to a filler
song that I don't particularly like just to get to the guitar
solo. If enough time was given to coming up with a well thought
out solo, then why couldn't they take the time to fix the song
itself? My only guess is that they were just too close to the
song itself to notice that they didn't hold up compared to the
solo stuff. Although the album isn't perfect by any stretch, the
album itself does hold up pretty well after all these years for
sure. They at least close out the album with a solid, chugging
rocker Night Ranger which is what I would have liked all of Dawn
Patrol to sound like. I can actually see the rating going up a
bit higher the more I listen to this. I think maybe because it's
been song long since I've heard this that I have to warm up to
it again.

I would have to warm up to it too. It’s been tooooooo long since
I bought this album when it came out. But I don’t know if I want
to go do that.
I pretty much just listen to their greatest hits. Love the
Ranger and their hits.

Having just listened through Dawn Patrol for a 2nd and 3rd time,
4 Stars is as high as I will go and it's a very generous 4 Stars
at that. I'm just not fond of Can't Find A Thrill, Young Girls
In Love and Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight. The songs as a whole are
just run of the mill. But they have awesome solos. So, it kind
of balances itself out when giving it 4 Stars. But I can do
without those songs for sure.

Midnight Madness is known for one song and one song only, their
MEGA, MONSTER Power ballad Sister Christian. This song alone
gives the album an automatic 3 stars. It's their biggest and
most famous song in their entire catalog and there isn't one
person I know that doesn't like it. It's awesome. So, what about
the rest of the album? Any good. Actually, it's very good. I
haven't listened to this one from front to back in well over 20
years. There are a ton of great songs that actually sound better
now than they did back in '83.
The album opens with the kick ass (You Can Still) Rock in
America which is the perfect song to kick things off. The album
isn't perfect, but its pretty damn close. The "weaker" song is
the last song Let Him Run which isn't a bad song by any
stretch. It would be the best song in any other bands catalog.
It's just that it is a bit underwhelming when comparing them to
their better songs like Rumors In The Sky, Why Does Love Have To
Change, Sister, Touch Of Madness, Passion Play, When You Close
Your Eyes and Chippin' Away.
Touch Of Madness is particularly interesting because it sounds
like a song that Ratt could and should have written. Go check it
out and tell me it doesn't sound like something that could have
been on Ratt's Invasion Of Your Privacy

By the time 7 Wishes came out, Night Ranger had unfairly been
pigeoned-holed as a ballad band. Honestly, how could they be
anything but that when their biggest hits were ballads. The band
didn't do themselves any favors with 7 Wishes because once
again, their biggest hits were....you guessed it....ballads. The
album as a whole is a bit uneven. A few lackluster songs that
are nothing more than filler. But and this is a BIG BUT, they
have some amazing kick ass solos from Jeff Watson and Brad
Gillis. It's just a shame that the songs themselves are so
mediocre.
Having said that, there are some great hard rock tracks like I
Will Follow You and Night Machine. I absolutely love Four In The
Morning, but I wouldn't even think of putting this in the 'rock'
category. It's more of a pop song than anything else. But like
all Night Ranger albums and somewhat ironic that I pointed out
earlier about their ballads....the best songs here are in fact
the ballads, Sentimental Street and Goodbye being their biggest
hits here. Personally for me Goodbye is the crown jewel for them
here because it blends the sensibilities of a power ballad and
some AMAZING guitar work. Just listen to Brad shred in the outro
to the song. Geeze man, that is wicked good!!!!!!! There are
times when I just keep playing the outro on loop over and over
and over. His tone is sick!!
Some great songs to be found here for sure. I just wish that it
was more cohesive as a whole.
