Question on Test Running Engines

Have two engines I am cleaning up and need to do test runs on.
Is it best to do this in the plane or to build a test run stand?
Just wondered, shouldn't be hard to set up a test stand.

Well Curt, if you ask 6 different people I'm sure you'll get 6
different answers. As for me I've been in the hobby for 40 some
years and have never run an engine on a test stand. For me it's
a waste of time. The best test stand is the front of an
airplane. Just make sure the engine is mounted secure and the
pickup line and the vent line is clear and don't have any holes
in them, set the needle valve where the Mfg. recommends, fill
the tank and crank it up. If it's a new engine keep the mixture
rich and don't run it wide open for extended periods. Use
throttle management while you’re in the air, that is don’t run
it full bore the whole time you’re in the air then shut it down
to land. In level flight use half to three quarter throttle, use
full throttle going into a loop and come off it on the back
side. Don’t fly at a constant speed the whole time, fly fast for
a couple of minutes then slow and allow the engine to cool down.
As it breaks in you can gradually lean the needle but always run
it on the rich side of peak. If the head starts to varnish up
you’re running it too lean. Another important thing is a
balanced propeller and spinner. Don’t think just because they
are new that they are balanced, they are most likely not. Follow
these suggestions and I’m sure your engine will outlast your
passion for the hobby.

Cool thanks for the info, will have to invest in a prop balancer
along with a few other things still. Waiting for the Feb meeting
hoping to get some deals. As far as the engine goes it is an old
engine that hasn't run for quite some time (read since God was a
boy). Great info though thanks. ;D

I agree. You can test run it in a test stand or in the plane.
Personally, I test run all of my engines in the plane itself. It
is a real time saver.
