roman]Prologue
It was annoyance that led Chessa Whitford to
even consider opening her eyes that morning. She was fourteen at
the time, and in a world far away from earth. The annoying thing
that knocked Chessa from her slumber was actually her sister
Cosette, who quite literally kicked her. With an oof! the young
girl was knocked her the soft bed and startled into opening her
eyes. "Good morning, Sleeping Beauty," Cosette teased, blue eyes
sparkling. Chessa's older sister was blonde like her, but
Cosette's hair was to her thighs.
With a huff, the sleepy girl sat up, rubbing at her eyes.
"What time is it, Cossie?" Chessa complained, scowling at the
older girl.
"Time for you to wake up," Cosette replied, laughing. "It
always is, sweetheart." Chessa vaguely remembered a time when
she had had her days and nights reversed, but that was before
the royal family had found her. Yes, Chessa had been adopted
three years ago during the hunt for the demon wolf Alazne.
The girl had been told the story a million times, how once
Alazne had been defeated she had been found buried in the fur of
the demon wolf, naked and crying for her mother. Her adoptive
father told Chessa that Alazne must have raised her, and Chessa
did recall memories of warmth and the feeling of safety.
"Whatever," Chessa grumbled, sitting up so the cold from
the marble floor wouldn't seep through her thin silk nightgown
and brush her skin. "Isn't Father hosting a ball or something
today?" When Cosette nodded seriously to confirm her fears
Chessa groaned and felt like laying back down. "Must we go?"
"Of course we have to go, me being the Crown and you the
second Heiress to the throne. Apparently Father has set up a
marriage for me, but of course you already have one. He's some
Duke's son," Cosette laughed. "The party starts at lunch where
we'll dance until midnight or so. We were instructed to wear our
finest."
"As if going isn't going to be enough," Chessa yelled
scowling even harder. Corsets, tight dresses, and hairpins were
what Father and Mother meant by 'finest'. All of the listed
items were very high on her blacklist, along with her stupid,
annoying fiancé, Colt.
Laughing, Cosette scooped her little sister up and dumped
her on a chair. "I'm going to sneak out today, and you must
cover for me, my dear Chessie," the pretty blonde instructed,
brushing Chessa's mid-back blonde hair until it was softer then
velvet. She quickly braided Chessa's hair and coiled it into a
bun. "Say I went riding or something. I've found something very
exciting! I trust you'll distract the guards?"
With a sigh, Chessa rolled her eyes. Cosette always trusted
her to make a scene for her to get away, and luckily she did the
same for Chessa. "Fine," the seven year old agreed, "but you
have to be back in time to get ready with me. Deal?"
"Deal."

roman]⚔
That stupid liar! Chessa thought, eyes
blazing as her maid, Melody, tightened the accursed corset. Once
the demon piece of clothing was secure, Melody took a beautiful
black dress of silk and draped it over Chessa's slight frame. As
the rather pretty maid did her face and hair, Chessa spoke to
her.
"Melody, Cosette never comes when she says she will. Have
you noticed it? I don't even think she's riding! Knowing my
sister, she's probably flirting with some young lord she ran
into," the blonde princess told her maid, a frown creasing her
brow.
"I'm sure she'll be back soon, Miss," Melody replied.
"Hmph!" Chessa scowled, but right after Melody spoke
Cosette swept in. Chessa swung to face her once Melody finished,
blue eyes furious. "You owe me big time!" Chessa yelled,
physically restraining herself from slapping the crown princess.
"Sorry," Cosette murmured and exited with Melody to get
ready. When her sister left the room, Chessa frowned, confused.
Cosette never said sorry, she usually just patted Chessa's head,
laughed, and doted on her "chess piece."
"Whatever," Chessa said, clearly unsettled by her adoptive
sister's strange behavior. And not only that, but Chessa was
pretty sure Cosette's eyes were blue, not yellow.
Frowning even more, Chessa left the room and entered the
dining hall, where noble lords and ladies and relatives of the
royal family milled, getting ready to eat before the men left
for a meeting with the king and the ladies for the queen's
court, both which lasted during the hours before the ball.
When the King faced her, he stiffened. Frowning, Chessa
wasn't sure what her father was freaking out about until he
pointed at his eye. Eyepatch. Cursing, Chessa spun around and
darted out of the room, one hand over her right eye. The golden
eye that was very noticeable next to her silver one. The king,
when he found her and saw her eyes, hid it from everyone else
but his wife and daughter and claimed she had lost it. Once back
in the room, Chessa snatched up the black pirate-style eyepatch
and tied it on. Sighing with relief, she sat down for a long
while until she was sure she wouldn't be sweaty when she arrived
in the dining hall. Chessa took a cup and poured water from the
pitcher in her room.
Once Chessa finished the water she realized it was way too
silent for the castle.
Startled, the pretty blonde rushed into the hall. The smell
of blood was thick in the air, and servants were lying on the
floor, bloody and crying as they died. Something under the heavy
scent rang a bell in Chessa's mind, but she ignored it, running
for the dining hall.
When Chessa flung the doors open she was met by a gruesome
scene: the bodies of nobles had been flung into walls and a few
had had their heads split open. A few limbs were lying without
bodies, but what really caught Chessa's eye was her parents
slumped on their thrones, ugly bite wounds covering their bodies
and blood soaking the fabrics of their clothes and dripping onto
the floor.
"C-Cosette?" Chessa whimpered, stomach churning. Where was
her sister. "Cossie? Whe-where are you?" The girl was in too
much shock to cry, and she stood there, staring at her parent's
lifeless bodies. Cruel laughter rang out behind her, and Chessa
spun to see Cosette standing behind her, blood splattering her
dress and a wild gleam in those weird yellow eyes.
"Beautiful, no?" she purred, but it wasn't her. A strange,
male voice came from Cosette's mouth, slurring her words
together. "It put a lot of strain on this body to do a full
take-over so soon."
Full...what? Chessa stared at the thing that wasn't her
sister, about ready to vomit.
"Well, since I have hardly any power left, I'll kill you
the easy way, daughter of Alazne." Chessa watched, horrified, as
Cosette drew a long sword and advanced. "Sorry, darling, I'd
love to make you my pawn, but Alazne's power beats even mine."
Cosette stabbed Chessa through her stomach and pulled it out,
smiling as Chessa collapsed and red quickly pooled under her.
Waving, she turned and walked out of the doorway, leaving Chessa
laying there with her cheek pressed against the cool marble.
"She...killed me? No, that wasn't Cossie. Right? Right?"
Chessa's voice cracked, and tears leaked from her silver eye and
got her eyepatch wet. "If that wasn't Cossie, then something's
inside of her and I have to get it out. I have to live." Taking
deep breaths, Chessa thought hard until a memory sparked into
her mind. Last year the king had taught Cosette and her how to
open a portal to earth, as there was the base of Hunters there.
Hunters were the people blessed with Keys to fight monsters, and
the main base was in the realm known as earth, and a branch of
Hunters were stationed in her realm, in Sioc, as well.
So she would go there and get healed, come back and beat
the crap out of her sister for getting possessed. Gritting her
teeth, Chessa pressed a finger to her wound until it was soaked
in blood and wrote a single ancient symbol on the tile with not
as much blood on it. "earth," she whispered, and the symbol
exploded with light. Tendrils of the strange glowing brightness
wrapped around Chessa and pulled her bleeding form into the
portal, and when she disappeared the lights did as well.
When then brightness disappeared, Chessa had to blink a few
times to adjust to the new dimness. It was nighttime, as
signaled by the moon and stars overhead, and fairly close to
where she had wanted to go. The king had brought her and Cosette
here once and had gotten them familiarized with the town and its
layout, so Chessa could tell she was a block or so away from the
entrance to the huge mansion that served as base. Since she was
currently laying in someone's yawn, Chessa stood up and cried
out at the pain in her side. The fourteen-year-old grit her
teeth as she stumbled forward, concentrating on staying upright.
Chessa ignored all the drunk men who wanted a little more
from her then just tag and managed to punch anyone who did
something she did not like, which caused her to bleed more. As
she had learned quite a bit in Sioc, Chessa knew that it was
only a matter of time until she died unless she got immediate
treatment from a Hunter with a Healing Key.
Finally, Chessa reached the Hunter's Base and nearly
collapsed at the door. Shaking with pain, she reached over and
pushed the little small button that made a ringing noise
indoors, which they had called a doorbell. When a girl around
seventeen opened the door, Chessa allowed herself to collapse,
head smacking onto the polished dark wood.
"Hey! What's wrong! Um, hello? Oh my God, is that blood?
Gray! Mr. Clark! This girl needs medical treatment!" the girl
yelled as Chessa struggled to breath on the floor.
"Safe," Chessa sobbed, still clutching her bloody stomach.
Cool hands grabbed her and pulled her in, and she heard the door
close behind her. The hand carefully turned her over, and an
older man's voice yelled in surprise.
"That's Her Majesty!" the man yelled. "James! We need you
full power, stat! We have a royal bleeding to death over here!"
"Majesty?" Chessa heard the girl ask.
"This is the second Heiress to the throne of Sioc, Princess
Chessa Arella Whitmore," the man told her, "But what is she
doing here?"
A second pair of hands touched Chessa's wound, and she
shrieked, silver eyes flying open to see a boy of about thirteen
years of age standing over her, along with a seventeen year old
boy and girl, and a thirty year old man. The thirteen year old
took out a large black key and slit his palm. He pressed his
hand against Chessa's bloody stomach as she cried, but slowly
stopped struggling as she realized the boy's blood was pulling
things back where they should be and healing them. The wound
mostly closed before he pulled away, breathing hard.
"That's my limit," he gasped, "Use regular medical
treatment for the rest, I've mostly pulled her system back into
order and healed most of the internal damage."
"Thanks James," the man said as she picked Chessa up,
looking worried as she whimpered. He laid her down on a hard bed
in a room by the door, and Chessa watched as he cut off the
remainders of her wet black dress and went to work putting
medicines and wrapping her stomach. After he bound the wound,
the man helped her into a hospital gown and laid her back down.
"Miss Chessa?" he murmured.
"Yes?" Chessa replied, very aware of the multiple people
crowding the doorway and hall.
"What happened?" the man asked, eyes worried. When Chessa
remained silent, he frowned and stood. "Sleep for now and we'll
talk in the morning. I'll have you go shopping for clothes
tomorrow, as it seems you'll be staying for quite a
while."
1
It had been a year or so since Chessa had
been saved by the Hunters, and a year since the massacre in
Sioc. Chessa was kept mostly locked in her room and hadn't
spoken since she had gotten at Base. She was bathed and
questioned regularly, but Chessa kept her mouth sealed to avoid
telling about that horrific night. Nor did she remove her soft,
dirty eyepatch.
Now she sat on a soft chair, looking out of the window of
her lonely room at the sunny yard that lay sprawling before the
mansion. Huge walls had been built since she had arrived, and so
the Hunters were allowed to train freely without the risk of
hurting a human. All normals knew of the Hunters and half of
them knew a bit about Sioc, but the Hunters still didn't really
want them watching their powers. Plus, you know, the Base needed
a defense.
"Miss?" said a young female voice, and Chessa spun eagerly,
hoping to see Melody's kind face. Instead, Miss Hall stood
behind her, holding a tray containing tea. The kind lady who
cared for her was used to her hopeful expression fall upon
seeing who she was, and so she didn't jump at Chessa's reaction.
Miss Hall, or Lisa, set the tea down and poured a cup, handing
it to Chessa. "They've uncovered a plot by an unknown enemy to
attack Base, so we're stepping up our defense. They're asking me
to tell you that you must keep the window shut and doors
locked."
Chessa frowned, because the window was the only connection
she had to the warm, welcoming sun that was the only thing that
truly accepted her. With a sigh, the pretty blonde stood and
pulled the curtains over the window. Usually, in Sioc, she would
have yelled insults and punched the messenger into the wall with
enough force to break their face, but Lisa was nice, so Chessa
tried hard to avoid doing that to her.
What Chessa really enjoyed about Lisa was the fact that she
didn't pry or ever say sorry. The ladies who said sorry were all
wimps and had no idea about what Chessa herself was going
through. Chessa herself understood that Lisa had been kidnapped
as a child and had been kept in the dark for many years before
she managed to escape and find her way to Base. Lisa had the Key
of Heat, so she could either fry you into bacon, or make you
feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Most preferred the latter.
Once Chessa finished her tea she set it on the tray once
more with a nod at Lisa, which was all the thanks the lady was
likely to get.
"Chessa, once the invasion from the enemy starts we won't
be coming in here, as we don't want them knowing of your
existence. I'll be taking my leave, Miss," Lisa told Chessa,
stood, and walked out. When the door swung shut behind the kind
woman and Chessa heard the lock click, she spat, scowling.
She had wanted to return to Sioc when she had healed, but
the Hunters had kept her locked up in this depressing hole and
kept asking questions. They didn't need to know of the massacre
at the castle, so she didn't speak, and yet they were stubbornly
keeping her against her will.
Chessa walked to her bed and flopped over with a sigh,
closing her silver eye. Why was it that these people were so
determined? Chessa wanted to punch them. Badly. Chessa made a
mental note to do so when escaping. As she enjoyed her future
plans, Chessa slowly drifted off, sinking into the numbing
darkness of sleep.
When Chessa woke, it wasn't because the rays of the morning
sun were kissing her face, it was due to the yelling and sounds
of battle outside. Frowning, Chessa walked to the window and,
disobeying orders, ripped the curtains off the wall. What the
royal saw made her freeze.
An army of monsters were beating the crap out of the
Hunters, and Cosette stood on the wall, watching with delight as
Hunters and monsters alike were murdered before her eyes.
2
Chessa stared at Cosette, now believing her
luck. Finally, someone who she could beat up on to get rid of
stress appears! Eyes narrowing with fury, Chessa pulled back a
fist and let it rip through the air, shattering the window on
contact. Shards of glass rained down onto some of the fighters
below, causing them to cover their heads to avoid getting
stabbed in the neck. A few of those who were out of range heard
the noise and turned to look at the shattered window and the
furious blonde standing in it. Seeing her army's distraction,
Colsette looked where they were looking and stiffened.
Scowling, Chessa launched herself out of the window and
landed on an unlucky goblin, who was squashed under her bare
feet. "Cossie," she managed to say, beginning to scrape off the
rust that covered her vocal cords. Most Hunters and monsters
were still fighting noisily, but somehow the thing that looked
like her adoptive sister heard and winced, jumping off the wall
and walking to stand a good ten feet from here.
"Chessa," Cosette greeted her cooly, eyes wary. "It appears
that you didn't die from the stab wound."
"No," was all the furious girl could manage to reply.
Seeing the soft condition she was in, Cosette grew more bold and
smirked, straightening herself and throwing a bold grin to a
male Hunter who appeared to be on her side.
"Well, lets see if I can kill you now. I'm more adjusted to
this body, and I'm at full power," she said, yellow eyes
glittering with triumph. Cosette took out a knife and slit her
palm and licked the blood that spilled from the cut. "Release,
key of Cormac,: she purred. Cosette's yellow eyes glowed and her
whole body trembled with sudden stress. Her beautiful, soft skin
was ripped away along with her body, and a huge snake sprouted
quickly from where she had once stood. Its tongue flicked in and
out as it hissed, "Release your power, daughter of Alazne."
Chessa forced herself to show no emotion at this hideous
form and avoided the voice urging her to vomit up the tea she
had drunk hours earlier.
