A Guide to Ragnarok Online
By: Red Date: April 17, 2013, 4:25 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
SETTING UP
Ragnarok Online is an MMORPG, or Massive Multiplayer Online Role
Playing Game. Games in this genre are general based off of
normal Role Playing videogames where you play as a character in
a virtual world, but allow the user to play with multiple people
and fill different roles. Ragnarok Online has been around for
ages. It was developed by Gravity in Korea and has since gained
world wide fame. The game server, the part of the game that
hosts maps for player to walk on and manages monsters and NPCs,
wasn't meant to be released to the public, but through tons of
leaks, private programmers have managed to assemble a working
clone of the game engine and now privately host servers. With a
intermediate knowledge of networking and programming, it's
fairly easy to set up a server in about an hour or two. In this
tutorial, we're not going to cover how to set up a server, but
rather how to play on one. For that you'll need three things: a
computer running a Windows operating system (not Mac, not an
Apple computer), a game client, and an internet connection.
First things first, let's download a game client. There's a lot
of research that's needed to pick a server that's right for you.
What do you enjoy more, the thrill of the hunt, fighting against
other players, or the storyline? If you enjoy spending time with
friends or other players, you'll probably want to look for two
things: how big a server's population is, and a lower rate. When
I mention rate, that means the rate at which a player gains
experience for leveling and how often drops from monsters are
found. These range from 1 to about 1,000,000, so multiply the
drop of items and the gain of experience by this number
depending on which server you choose. As a personal bias, I'm
going to recommend RebirthRO, a medium-high rate server. the
rates run about 100x 100x 20x, which means 100 times as much
base and job experience, and 20 times on item drops.
You can view a list of server on ratemyserver.net here:
HTML http://ratemyserver.net/index.php?page=listserver&rate=all&order_type=default_high&page_num=1
You can view the RebirthRO website here:
HTML http://www.rebirthro.com/
To start out, register an account on the website and do whatever
you need to do to activate it. Oftentimes, servers won't need
you to do much more than just have you give them some info.
Don't worry about what username you give them, this won't be
your character name. Next, download their full client. Don't
download their small client unless you really know what you're
doing. Trust me, if you're reading this guide, download the full
client.
After that's done, click on the set up file you've downloaded
and let it do its thing. After that's done, you're ready to
play!

Starting Out
By: Red Date: April 17, 2013, 6:20 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
STARTING OUT
When you open the game, it needs to patch - or download all the
missing game files included in updates that haven't been applied
to the downloadable client. If you have issues launching the
game, check your client's server's website and see if they have
a manual patch. Download that if something's not working and run
it. If everything's cleared up and working, great! If not, you
may contact me and I can give you a client that I KNOW works.
Alright, if you didn't register an account with your server yet,
on the patcher, depending on your client, there should be a
Register button. Click this and register now if you haven't
registered yet. After starting the game, another window opens
up and the patcher closes. You should hear music if you've
download directly from the website for some servers. Others
don't include a BGM pack by default, but RebirthRO should. If
you're still having trouble, ask a friend. You can play the game
without music, it shouldn't be a big deal, unless you're dead
set on having the full experience. I do recommend the
soundtrack, myself.
On that new window should be a login window. Enter your account
info and let it process. If it doesn't give you an error, you're
in! If it did, you might have registered for the wrong thing.
Some servers have people make a separate account for forums and
other website functions. If you registered on the website, make
sure you've checked your email for an activation message. If
that isn't the issue, register another account from the patcher
window instead.
Once logged in, a server select screen should pop up. You can
choose just about any server you want, but if you're using
RebirthRO, I'd recommend Loki. Rebirth has different rates for
all of their servers, but Loki seems to be the most balanced.
Next, a character selection screen should pop up. Most servers
allow for players to have upwards of 15 characters, like
RebirthRO. You can use this to your advantage later, but for
right now, you can make sure you're on the number 1 page of your
character select screen, select the left most square, and click
the button at the bottom right of the window that says "make".
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/zvA8Z4zHSa7qsJ6JL_TK_A17185[/img]
Once you click that, you'll be at the character creation screen.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/PaeLc5Eo-2-o7AA3qLtTSw26767[/img]
You can mess with hairstyles all you want, I don't really care.
You can change these in game - usually for free. The main thing
I need to explain is all the stat stuff on the right. On the
little graph we have a fancy hexagon with arrows around it. If
you click the arrows, the graph adjusts itself. You shouldn't
need to worry too much about this either, you can leave it
neutral. I can explain more about what stat needs to be at what
level when you choose your character job.
We're faced with our six fancy stats, Strength, Agility,
Vitality, Intelligence, Dexterity, and Luk. As a brief primer,
Strength allows you to hit higher with melee and carry more
items. Your inventory is limited by weight, but there's also a
storage system to store your items in. On some servers, you need
to pay to access them, but RebirthRO offers this game mechanic
for free, isn't that nice of them? More on that later. Next is
Agility, which effects how fast you attack and how well you can
dodge hits from adversaries. Agility does NOT increase walk
speed, so don't load up a whole bunch of leveling points into it
thinking you're speedy. I'm joking, do whatever the hell you
want. Vitality affects hit points and how defensive your
character is. A character with high vitality will not only
survive relatively longer than those without, but will also take
less damage from hits. Intelligence is normally only used by
mage-like characters since they're spell based. Spells take SP
to use based on a couple factors, but the point of intelligence
is to give you more SP to use. It also increases the potency of
some spells and increases how much damage magical attacks deal.
Dexterity is very important and is used by just about every
single class in one way or another. Dexterity effects the time
it takes to cast spells and increases the chance to hit foes
with attacks. It also increases the speed of attacks less
significantly than Agility does and increases how high you hit
with melee less significantly than Strength. Last but not lease,
we have luck. Mainly, Luck increases the change of having a
lucky dodge or an attack and it also increases how often you
score a critical hit upon an opponent.
Anyway, once you've created your character and entered a name,
you'll be zoomed back to this screen here:
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/fMFjzWkmJJtaWSr9vIJ2ng32681[/img]
Oh, you can just ignore my ultra fabulous characters to the left
of our hero. We're going to ahead and click the big OK button at
the bottom right of that window and continue on our way.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/n1DsT7Cldg8ds57BfRTUzw287349[/img]
As you can see, our first map is pretty fabulous! There's a
couple people that have come to say hello out of boredom,
probably, but down be shy, [s]most people are pretty
friendly[/s]. Talk to our friend Shion to get a run through of
where you are and such. It should all be pretty basic. If you
talk to her a second time, she'll nag at you, but give you a
level for good measure! Fancy, free levels! That level you
gained is a Base level. Players have two levels, a Base and a
Job level. Job levels allow you to level up skills, while Base
levels give you stat points to use. I'll explain more later.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/H8s_P5YNq1jc-XD6m4UZgA439686[/img]
By the way, see that thing at the top right of the screen? I
shouldn't have to tell you, but that's your mini-map. The little
arrow is you and all the red dots are portals that lead to other
maps. Some maps don't have any minimaps and leave you to
navigate on your own. Don't fret though, it normally is pretty
straightforward. If you're in a party or a guild, members on the
same map as you will show up as squares and triangles,
respectively.
Anyhow, more on levels, when you gain one, a little square pops
up on the bottom right of your client window to let you know.
When clicked on, it brings up the stats and equipped items
window.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/fZyxFo6b5GRcBDU1xPQKlw45289[/img]
As you can see, this holds a lot more information than
expected. Your Atk is melee attack, your Matk is magic attack,
your Hit is how well you can hit monsters or accuracy, Critical,
or just Crit, is your critical hit rate, Defense is a given, and
is increased by Vit or by wearing armor. Mdef is also effected
by armor and some skills, I think. Flee is how well you can
dodge hits and Apsd is Attack Speed. Servers have different caps
for this, but the average is usually 196, which is REALLY fast.
Only with certain classes is this a probable number to obtain.
Your Status points should be a given. You get status points for
each base level gained. You can use status points on skills by
clicking the black arrow next to it. Once the black arrow
disappears, you've run out of enough status points to level it
up any further. The number to the right of the arrow is the
point cost to level that skill up by 1. The number to the left
of the arrow is the stat's level. The level of each stat is
known as your Build, which should be different for every job.
Once you're done with this, you can lick the right bubble at the
top right of the window to close it (not your client window) or
by pressing Alt+Q. Most important windows have a keyboard
shortcut to open and close them. For example, Alt+E is your
Inventory. You can mess around with that a little if you want.
Also, Alt+S is your skills window. There's nothing fancy there,
but it's good to get acquainted with it. If you need a more
graphical route to get there, you can mess around with the
window up on the top left. I'm not going to either bother
explaining it, just use it until it works. Okay, moving on.
If you move east from there, you'll find yourself at the portal
to the actual tutorial. Go in and talk with the guy and enter
your name. Click "apply for training" and head on in. If you
didn't choose this, you're going to have a much different
experience of the ragnarok world. There's actually a fix for
this, and I'll list it since it'll be most useful now. If you're
on RebirthRO, in your chat box, (you might have to click "enter"
once to bring it up) type in "@go new" without the quotes and
you'll end up at the beginning again. NOW DON'T MESS UP!
Once you're in, talk with the armoured man and he'll give you
several levels. You will realize that once you get a job level,
another square shows up on the left side of your screen.
Sometimes this happens though:
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/_dGZ432vBFiQSSUH8Yg-xg44306[/img]
Just click Alt+S if that happens and it'll disappear. Once that
happens, you'll be faced with the skill screen.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/0MHrSUJB9ePKhMZ7HFoloQ14023[/img]
If it looks like this, you can click the little "level up"
bubble next to the skill to increase it. More on this later.
Once Basic Skill is up to 9, it's at max level and you can
change your job. You can see how many more skill points at the
bottom of that skill window. After appending levels to skills,
click apply to confirm it, and it works its magic.
The skill window can also be expanded to see all skills
available to you in a much more orderly fashion. As you change
your job, more skills will show up, and some require other
skills to be leveled up before you can level another. If you
view the skill window in expanded view (click the left button on
the top right of the window), you will be able to see what level
what skills need to be if you hover over more advanced skills.
If you have skill points available to use, you can click on any
of the skills and points will start filling in the gaps to
unlock it for use. In the condensed view of the window (as shown
above), the skill must have a bubble in order to level it up,
but in expanded view, this becomes obsolete. Try leveling skills
with either views and figure out which one works for you.
Other skills are only unlockable by completing quests, and don't
usually require a skill point to level up. Make sure you read up
on your skills and what they do.
Keep talking to the people until you get items. You can equip
them by pressing Alt+E and double clicking the item.
Alternatively, you can unequip them in the Alt+Q window and
doubleclicking it there.
Once you talk to the entrance guard, you get teleported to the
field. Equip all the new novice gear you got! Kill things until
your job level is 10, then level up your Basic Skill until it's
9, as previously mentioned. Once you're at 10, move on by
heading north and talking to the guy by the wall. The rest is
pretty self explanatory.

---------------------------------------------------------
STARTING OUT II
So after you finish your job quiz, you will either be teleported
to the town of the job you were recommended, or the town of the
job you selected, that is, if you took the quiz at all. If you
didn't take the quiz, and just said "Let me start," then you
should already be in Prontera. No matter where you are, there's
a couple things we need to do first. The first thing, is to get
to the city of Prontera. In most servers, this is what would be
considered the main town, like a rendezvous point for the whole
server. Here you'll find tons of players, depending on the size
of your server, all waiting for party members, or just sitting
there with no direction at all. If you have the BGM pack, you
might enjoy the music, and that might be what some people are
doing. No matter, let's get to business.
Okay, so to get to Prontera, maybe walk around the town you were
teleported to until you find one of two NPCs (Non-Player
Characters). One should be called Kafra (there's a whole bunch
of these all over the place) and the other is Warpra. Some Kafra
agents can't warp you, but the Warpras should always be able to.
If you chose to warp from Kafra, it normally costs money, but if
you took the quiz, you should have a couple free tickets to use
them for free. I'll discuss money in a couple paragraphs. If you
found Warpra, Tell her you'd like to Warp>Towns>Prontera. That
should get you to Pront* Pretty quickly.
[sup]*Pront is an abbreviated form of Prontera and is used
fairly commonly by players.[/sup]
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/HpDwBLRJ-PDY-ckwArBm3w441505/GW570H265[/img]
[sub]RebirthRO's Prontera all decked out four months after
Christmas[/sub]
[sup]ended. Get your stuff together, jeez![/sup]
The other method that doesn't involve and NPC, and is
significantly quicker to use, is the @go command. In RebirthRO,
players are allowed to use this command to get to certain
popular points. To use the @go command, you bring up your chat
box at the bottom on the screen (which you can do by just
pressing "Enter" and a white box should appear), or if it's
already there, just make sure there's a blinking cursor inside
of it. If there's not, click on the largest box within the white
box. Type in @go 0 (zero) to get to Pront or you can type @go
prontera/pront/anything. If the @go command doesn't recognize
where you're trying to warp to, it just sends you to prontera by
default. In addition to this command, there's also the @warp
command which can take you to any map if you know the id of it,
but Rebirth currently doesn't let players do that, so we can be
content with just the @go command. There's more commands
available, but as they come up, I'll explain them.
Alright, so once you're in Pront, bring up your inventory by
pressing Alt+E or using the window on the top left to navigate
to it. Once there, Click on the top inventory tab on the side of
the window and look at what we've got.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/Dhig22EhbeCtlOP4o01IEA104036[/img]
It looks like I have some Novice Potions, which won't do me very
good as I gain more levels, some Fly Wings, which I can use to
just around maps if I need to get somewhere or get out of a
tight spot, some Butterfly Wings, which we can throw out,
because they teleport you to where your character is saved (more
on that later), and we have the @go command for that, and
lastly, some Magnifiers, which we can use to identify items we
get from monsters. Like I mentioned, you can throw out the
butterfly wings if you like, or sell them, but they're not worth
very much. Everything else should be somewhat useful to us. If
you navigate the the second tab of the inventory window, we
should see all of our equippable items. You might see some Rods
or Knifes you could've gotten from drops from within the
training ground, but for the most part, there should at least be
a Cotton Shirt and a basic Knife. If you have the rest of your
novice gear equipped (by double clicking the items), you
shouldn't have much else. The third tab is Etc Items which we
use for quests or just generic loot. To drop anything, just
click and drag it out of the inventory window.
There's three items you should be concerned about right now, and
those are Rainbow Carrots, Orange Juices, or Unripe Apples.
These three items are used to tame certain monsters (Lunatics,
Drops, and Porings, respectively). If you want to try your hand
at taming a monster, when you're in a field, double click on the
item when the monster is in site, and then click the monster
when your cursor becomes a circle. Make sure you don't mess up,
because you lose your item after double clicking it. After you
click the monster, a little slot machine should pop up, and when
you click on it, it stops on either Success or Failure, and if
you're successful, you gain an Egg of that monster in your
Weapons tag in your Inventory. You can't do anything with it
until you have a Pet Incubator item, so don't worry about them
for now.
Okay, where were we. You probably have some junk items in your
Etc Inventory tag if you picked some up while killing monsters.
Your character has a limit of how much weight they can carry
around, so if you have items you don't need, it's best to sell
them. Alternatively, if there's items you want to keep, you may
store them using the @storage command or talking to a Warpra or
Kafra. Remember, you have to pay to use Kafra. To store things,
just drag the objects from the Inventory window to the Storage
window. Don't worry, this won't accidentally drop your stuff.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/1/u6uo_k5C9CS6aqN-OeS9eA513584[/img]
To sell items, we're going to visit the Tool dealer. If you run
out of magnifiers, potions, or other odd items, you can normally
find them here. The portal location is in the top left of the
town square, check the minimap to make sure you're in the right
place. Go ahead and walk in when you thin you've found it. The
inside should look like this.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/DTLLwT43iOAYKIy18L7CBw358341[/img]
Talk to the Tool Dealer, highlighted by my cursor in the shot.
You'll be given a list of options for what you want to do. You
can go through the list of items she has, but since you don't
really have any money, it won't do you much good. Instead click
sell. To sell things, drag them from the window on the left to
the window on the right. A total should appear on the bottom of
the right window. I'd mainly sell Jellopies, Clover, Fluff,
Feathers, Trunks, and just about anything else that would reside
in your Etc tab. I'd keep the potions and fly wings and
magnifiers for later use. Store them if you so please. Any
Armour and stuff that you aren't using I'd sell, unless someone,
like, gave it to you or something. For the most part, don't
worry about it.
After you confirm selling on the right window, the money will be
added to your character and the items will disappear from your
inventory. A little bit on calculating item worth, There's a
couple things I'd be aware of. Items have a couple different
properties that can surround them. You may hear people selling
items with a +5 or something before the item name. This is the
item's refine rate. Not all items can be refined, but the ones
that can become significantly more powerful then their unrefined
counterparts. The maximum refine rate for this server is +10,
and any +10 item probably shouldn't be sold. Refining doesn't
increase the value of sale to an NPC shop such as the Tool or
Weapon dealer, but may hold more value to another Player
Character (PC). The most ferocious part of the Ragnarok economy
revolves around Merchant class players. They can set up shops
(on this server, normally in the town of Payon) that other
players can buy from without having to trade manually with
another player (right clicking the player and "requesting a
deal"). Players can set their own prices for their wares no
matter how ludicrous it could be. You can see what people are
selling by using the @whosell <itemname or ID> command. This
gets more in depth, but I won't bother explaining it at the
moment.
Back to refining items, let's say you have a Main Gauche [3]
(the number in brackets is how many card slots it has), and you
want to increase how much power it holds. To do this, right
click on the item in your inventory. A little window should pop
up giving you some information on the item and stuff, but within
that box should be a line that says "Weapon Level: 1". This
means it's a lower level weapon. You can also see what classes
can wield it if you scroll down that box a little farther, but
other than that, that's all we need. Level 1 weapons are refined
with Phracon, an item you may or may not have come in contact
with yet. It's normally placed within your Etc tab in your
Inventory if you're looking for it. To refine your weapon, you
can either find a very high level smith that you trust (keyword:
very), or by going to the refining NPC located in most towns.
The NPC in Prontera is located south-east in the town square.
The portal's a little tough to find, because the map might be
aligned to it's default position, looking north. To change this,
right click anywhere on the ground and drag your mouse from side
to side.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/X5DsX-2MA43AQkcYSRLrVQ506071[/img]
[sup]The portal is where my cursor is, the tiny door.[/sup]
Once in there, you can talk to the man behind the counter, who
will evaluate which items you are wearing. Make sure you equip
the item you want to refine before starting this process. If you
can't equip it, you can't refine it, unless you're a
Whitesmith/Master Smith class. The quickest workaround to this
is to make another character and refine it, or just question
whether it's worth refining at all then. If you want to transfer
an item between characters, put it in storage. Character storage
spans all of your characters, so anyone you create has access to
it. Handy! Anyhow, just keep talking with the guy until you
decide how many time you want to refine it. There is a safe
limit, +7 normally for level 1 weapons. After that, the weapon
can break and you LOSE IT FOREVER IT'S GONE IT'S ALL GONE. More
on refining here:
HTML http://irowiki.org/wiki/Refinement_System
*
[sup]*NOTE: Some of the information in that article may not be
congruent with the RebirthRO server or whatever server you're
playing on. It's optimized for the International Ragnarok Online
server, or the stock server that's officially run by Warpportal,
who bought the rights to English Ragnarok.[/sup]
Also, the card slot ([1], [2], [3], and [4] after a weapon) lets
you put status modifying cards into the weapon. These take
effect as soon as you equip them, and certain cards can only be
put on certain types of armor and weapons. Make sure you read
the card's info by right clicking it in your inventory before
trying to use it. If you ever get a card drop from a monster, it
is EXTREMELY RARE more or less, and should be stored until you
know what you want to do with it. Never use cards on crappy
gear, so until you know what crappy gear is, don't use them.
Also, make sure you REFINE BEFORE you attach a card. You will
lose any cards on an item that breaks during a refine.
Also, if your Armour/weapon is ever broken in battle, the text
of it will become red and it will be unequipped. While it
doesn't disappear forever, you have to get it repaired by the
repairman in the same location as the refine guy. He's located
just behind the counter.

CHOOSING A JOB
You can see an overview of all the jobs here:
HTML http://www.playragnarok.com/gameguide/classes_index.aspx
If you've been following along so far, there's a couple things I
want to let you know. RebirthRO does not have 3rd classes, so
don't bother. They're working on it, I think, though. The
highest class you will ever get to currently is the Transcendent
classes.
In Rebirth, they have two main ways of changing your job. The
first is to actually do the quest initially required. If this is
your first time playing, I'd HIGHLY recommend doing the quest.
For your first class, the quest is normally very easy. Once
you're Job Level is 10, head to wherever the guild for the job
you want to be is. After the quest is done, you get some free
loot as well to help you out. If you can't waste your time, talk
to the Job Master in Prontera.
HTML http://image.wetpaint.com/image/3/EABIFzsUIFomsRoT5urt1w172943[/img]
The starting jobs are as follows:
Swordsman - Specializes in tanking (taking damage for the party)
and dealing high damage over a decent period of time. Good solo
class.
Mage - As you would think, uses elemental spells to take down
enemies. Not completely practical for the solo player.
Archer - Uses bows and later falcons to help bring down enemies.
Arrows are the main investment of this class, and they can get
expensive, but are fairly effective.
Merchant - The weapon of choice is an axe to cleave enemies in
two. Has various skills to get the best deals when selling. Also
has the ability to have an expanded inventory via pushcart.
Thief - Uses dagger-like weapons to deal quick damage. They are
master of fleeing and rarely get hit in battle. They also can
steal various loot from monsters. Highly independent.
Acolyte - Don't let this class fool you, it can pack a powerful
punch. While learning many healing and buffing skills early on
makes it perfect to party with, they kill undead monsters with a
snap.
---- EXPANDED CLASSES ----
TaeKwon Kid - A young master of the fist and kick, TaeKwons
enter battle sans weapon and come to kick ass.
Ninja - Think of this class as "a Thief gone Sage," they utilize
their SP to confuse and mess up their opponents from the
shadows.
Gunslinger - A skilled marksman, the gunslinger is a master of
the draw and are fairly adaptable for any situation. Bullets and
guns do get a tad expensive though.
Super Novice - Like skills? Use this class. Outfitted with
select skills from the first 6 classes, they're ready for
anything. Requires 40 Base as well as 10 Job to change into it.
Free panties.
I'm actually tricking you by waving these classes in front of
your face. What you actually should be looking at is the final
Transcendent class that you want to be working towards. You
won't stay your first class forever, so it's best to know what
you want to be more when you "grow up" if you catch my drift.
Check back on the first page I linked you to in this post and
drool over them until you decide.
Once you've made your decision, head to the Classes page on iRO
Wiki to get more info on your job and how to complete the quest
for it. The page is found here:
HTML http://irowiki.org/wiki/Classes
After you change jobs, you'll want to check out the Builds for
it, or how to level up your stats and skills. You can take iRO's
word for it, research on forums, or just try trial and error.
Once you're job level 40 - 50, it's time to change jobs again.
This time, you have quite the decision to make. I won't list
them here but if you head back to the page here:
HTML http://irowiki.org/wiki/Classes
- You should be able to figure
out what direction you want it to take. Some of the expanded
classes don't have anywhere to go to, so they stay the same. The
final decision is up to you, really. Once you're all said and
done, look up the quest again. Again, I'd highly recommend doing
the quest ESPECIALLY for this job change, because this is where
you get the best loot.
TRANSCENDING
Once you reach 99/50 as your second job, it's time to change.
The process of transcending is normally very involved, but here
I'd like to just simplify it, and say talk to the Job Master.
Unless you really want to spend 1,000,000 zeny on transcending
and dealing with not have any money afterwards (that's a
requirement), it's much simpler to just do the cheap way and
talk to the guy. Once you transcend, you're a novice again! Yay!
You are given 100 free stat points to use, and your job path is
already set for you. You are stuck leveling up to the same job
you first chose. Also, to make it even more difficult, most of
the items you'd normally wield can't be used anymore as a
novice, since you're what's known as a "High Novice". It's kinda
stupid, but all you gotta do it level to your next job, the
first job again. Once you get job level 40 - 50 again, you can
finally level to your final class, the Transcendent 2nd class.
This is where the meat of Ragnarok Online is. On high rate
servers, this process is all pretty streamlined and you're
normally expected to at least reach 2nd class or transcend
within the first day. Don't be caught up in everyone's
expectations and just enjoy the game for what it is, you don't
have to do anything anyone says, except for me. I'm kidding, but
then why the hell are you even reading this guide? Jeez.
That's basically the whole game! Once you transcend, you should
start being concerned about leveling and getting good drops like
weapons and stuff. Also, you should try out PvP, MVPing (killing
boss monsters), mess around with builds, join or start a guild
and participate in War of Emperium, create more characters to
play on, convert friends to play the game, start a cult,
sacrifice your firstborn to satan, and then reach max level and
sit around in Prontera and call everyone a noob. Am I kidding?
The world may never know.
I'd say that in my experience, 50% of the game is research on
the internet. If you don't know what something is, type it in to
Google with the world "ragnarok" after it, and just about
anything should come up. You'll probably become well acquainted
with RateMyServer, where you'll find most of your resources as
well as new servers to play on.
[sub]Ratemyserver[/sub]
HTML http://ratemyserver.net/
Also, as I previously linked to, iRO wiki is priceless as well.
They have most of the information about the logistics of the
game and quests and stuff, and I wouldn't be writing this guide
without it. If you have any questions, they probably have an
answer somewhere in there. When in doubt, ask another player,
but try not to bother GMs, as they're usually fairly busy. You
can also contact me, as I'm MORE than happy answering literally
any question about Ragnarok. It's my constant
obsession/addiction. If you're playing on a well-known server,
chances are, they might have their own wiki! RebirthRO does, but
it's not quite as big as iRO. Links to the other sites are found
here:
[sub]iRO Wiki[/sub]
HTML http://irowiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
[sub]RebirthRO Wiki[/sub]
HTML http://wiki.rebirthro.com/Main_Page
A little personal blurb here, I played Ragnarok for the first
time back in the early 2000s when they were still charging
monthly for it. I wasn't very good at all, but ever since so
many nice people have created private servers, I've gotten much
better. When I started getting back into it, I played on the
late EternityRO server which I miss greatly. It was a low rate
server at about 4x 4x 4x, nothing fancy. After that server lost
support and went down the drain, I found RebirthRO. This was
about the time that Warpportal released the Valkyrie servers,
and also started the Classic servers of the game before the
Renewal update. I started on those and suddenly remembered how
hard the original game was without boosted rates. If you're
curious, I'd give it a shot. The community's huge, and iRO is
actually completely relevant there. The downside to this is that
the servers lag often because of so many players. Nonetheless,
if you have the extra room and tons of time on your hands, give
it a shot. I also recently started playing on the DreamerRO
(high rate) and EarthboundRO ((ebRO) med/high rate) servers,
which have been fun, but altogether, not for me.
You can find me in-game on Rebirth by using the handle Red
Summer, or Chicken McChicken. My last bit on this tutorial post
will be how to whisper to people I guess haha. In the chat box,
the left little pane next to where you type messages is the
Whisper list. You can whisper to people by typing in their name
(case and space sensitive) into here and then typing a message
in the other box. If you get the name wrong or they're not
online, a feedback message will let you know. Yay!

LEVELING AND COMBAT
Before you plan on leveling up, make sure you talk with one of
the warpras and save your location. You don't need to do this
every time you log in and out, this only modifies where you
respawn when your HP reaches zero.
As far as leveling goes, I'd look up where's best for your class
on forums or something. After they give you a map, look it up on
RateMyServer and figure out how to get there. If you figure out
which town it's near, you can say something like, "Go to Veins,
go one map south/down, and two maps east/right." If you want to
look at your map in-game, you can press Ctrl+`/~ to enter and
exit it, but RMS should be navigable. To get to a dungeon, talk
to the Warpra, and say Warp>Dungeons>{your choice}. Some
dungeons cost money to go to, so make sure you have enough
funds.
If you're really out of places, you may refer to this list.
Base lvl 1-15 - new_zone01 - The training grounds
Base lvl 15-30 - pay_dun00 - Payon Dungeon lvl 1
Base lvl 30-40 - pay_dun01 - Payon Dungeon lvl 2
Base lvl 40-60 - pay_dun02 - Payon Dungeon lvl 3
Base lvl 60-75 - pay_dun04 - Payon Dungeon lvl 5
Base lvl 75-99 - in_sphinx4 - Sphinx lvl 4 (Party with
Crusader/Knight for tank and kill Anubis OR Have Priest who
knows skill Turn Undead and use on Anubis with tank)
Base lvl 75-99 - lhz_dun01 / lhz_dun02 - Biolabs/Somatology
Laboratory/Lighthalzen Dungeon (Party Recommended w/ healer or a
lot of potions)
Base lvl 75-99 - tha_t01 / tha_t12 - Thanatos Tower (Party
Recommended, do your research beforehand) -
HTML http://ratemyserver.net/index.php?page=areainfo&area=1013
Base lvl 100-150 - thor_v01 / thor_v03 - Thor's Volcano (Water
weapons and skills are a must-have)
Base lvl 100-150 - lhz_dun03 - Biolabs/Somatology
Laboratory/Lighthalzen Dungeon lvl 3 (do your research)
Base lvl 150-200 - MVP room
Base lvl 100-255 - Cata - Somatology Laboratory lvl 4,
technically. Accessed by player warp or small quest. RebirthRO
only. Party is very handy.
MAKING MONEY
At any point in the game, you may find yourself at a lack of
monetary resources. This is normal, and normally results at you
getting laughed and and rejected for panhandling in Prontera
(don't do that, by the way). Also, Rebirth makes it easy to
accumulate items with the @autoloot command, which picks up
items automatically as soon as they're dropped. Here's a couple
methods that should work.
Method 1
Recommended Base Level: 20-50
Execution: Run around Payon dungeon level 1 & 2 and kill Zombies
for Opals and Skeletons for Accessories (Skull Rings) and
Skel-Bones and sell them to the tool dealer right outside of the
entrance to the dungeon. Opals sell for 3k, rings for ~5k, and
skel-bones for 100z each.
Profit/hour: about 200-300k probably.
Method 2
Recommended Base Level: 50-70
Execution: Run around Payon Dungeon level 3 and kill ****uns and
Munaks for their hair.
Profit/hour: about 400-500k probably.
Method 3
Recommended Base Level: 60+
Execution: Go to Magma Dungeon level 1 (not Thor's volcano) with
a character who has water-based skills/attacks. My favorite is
some archer class with high dex, high aspd, and ice arrows on a
+10 composite bow [4]. Simple and cheap. Go to the dungeon and
walk around the first floor killing the bat things which drop
Mastela fruits which sell for 4k each. On a server with decent
drops, 8/10 of them should drop one, and they're everywhere.
Make sure you have the @autoloot command turned on. You can do
this and use the fruits as healing items in other situations,
but I normally just sell them.
Profit/hour: ~1m probably. Depends on walk speed and kill speed.
Method 4
Recommended Base Level: 100+
Recommended Job: High Priest or High Wizard with no cast (Dex
about 135+)
Execution: Warp to Geffenia 2 and use Magnus Exorcismus if
you're a priest OR Lord of Vermillion if you're a mage class to
kill Incubus and Succubus. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AUTOLOOT ON.
Depending on the drop rate of the server, this can be very
profitable. Leave when you reach 90% weight limit using the @go
command. For a priest, uses about 50 blue gemstones a round.
Sell the spears, mastela fruits, instruments, zargons, and
little evil wings/horns that you get.
Profit/hour: ~5m
Method 5
Recommended Base Level: 150+
Execution: Go into the MVP rooms and kill them for their cards.
Turtle General cards can sell for about 130m each.
Profit/hour: ~25m due to rarity of cards. Sell using a Merchant
class character.
One of the ways to make money on a server is to make a
Whitesmith/Master Smith who knows how to refine items, get their
job level to 70, and get Meteor Plates and Lucius's Fire Armor
from Thor's Volcano and refine them to +10, and sell for upwards
of 10m. Also look at what other people are selling and how much
they're selling them for.
Cata in RebirthRO has a ton of different drops. Eye of Amistir,
which can sell for about 5m+ each, are drops from the wickedly
difficult MVP from there, but are very much sought after as it's
an ingredient for the Drooping Amistir hat. Also, Fabled thread
sells for about 30m each as well.
*****************************************************
