       Electronic Music Appreciation 101
By: Red Date: March 13, 2013, 9:21 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Educate yourselves! Time to not be ignorant about other music
genres anymore! I'm going to make several threads dedicated to
different genres of music and their differences. All the
descriptions are dragged from Wikipedia in an attempt to provide
the most unbiased opinion about each subgenre. Today's thread -
Electronic! More subgenres may be added at a later date. All of
the songs are also hand picked by me, so it you don't like them
you can stay quiet and not like them quietly.
       Drum & Bass:
Drum and bass (/ˈdrʌm ənd ˈbeɪs/) (also
written as drum 'n' bass and commonly abbreviated to D&B, D+B or
DnB) is a type of electronic music which emerged in the
mid-1990s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats
(typically between 160–180 beats per minute, occasional
variation is noted in older compositions), with heavy bass and
sub-bass lines. Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the United
Kingdom rave scene of the early 1990s. Over the first decade of
its existence, the incorporation of elements from various
musical genres led to many permutations in its overall style.

       Electro Swing:
Electro swing is a musical genre fusing swing styles with house
production techniques, with influences from other forms of EDM.
Contemporary artists of the genre incorporate loops, samples,
melodies and styles from the Swing, Jazz and Big Band era such
as Django Reinhardt, Cab Calloway and Benny Goodman to create
new, more club friendly and accessible compositions. Leading
artists include Parov Stelar, Caravan Palace, Bart And Baker,
       Dutty Moonshine, Kiwistar and Swingrowers.

       House:
House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated
in the American city of Chicago in the early 1980s. It was
initially popularized circa 1984 in Chicago, but beginning in
1985, it fanned out to other major cities such as Detroit,
Toronto, New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Montreal,
Manchester,[1] Miami, London,[1] and Paris. It then began to
influence popular music in Europe, with songs such as "House
Nation" by House Master Boyz and the Rude Boy Of House (1987)
and "Doctorin' The House" by Coldcut (1988) in the pop charts.
Since the early to mid-1990s, house music has been infused in
mainstream pop and dance music worldwide.

       Downbeat:
Downtempo (sometimes referred to as "chill out", "chill" or
"downbeat") is a type of electronic music style similar to
ambient music, but usually with a beat or groove.[1] The tempo,
as well as the drum patterns of each track can vary. Sometimes
the beat can be restrained and/or simple. Sometimes the beats
are more complicated and more featured instead of being in the
background, but even then they are usually less intense than
other kinds of electronic music like trance and house. The tempo
is often slower than that of traditional electronic dance music.
Often the name chill-out music is used to refer to songs
demonstrative of the genre, but those names also refer to other
styles of music, and downtempo encompasses a wider variety of
styles than those terms alone would indicate. Due to the
relaxing and often sensual or romantic feel of most downtempo
music, it is a popular form of background music in 'chill out
rooms' of dance parties, and many alternative cafes.

       Hip hop:
Hip hop music, also called hip-hop,[1][2] rap music,[2][3][4] or
hip-hop music,[2][5] is a music genre consisting of a stylized
rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and
rhyming speech that is chanted.[2] It developed as part of hip
hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic
elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and
graffiti writing.[6][7][8] Other elements include sampling (or
       synthesis), and beatboxing.
While often used to refer to rapping, "hip hop" more properly
denotes the practice of the entire subculture.[9][10] The term
hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap
music,[2][5] though rapping is not a required component of hip
hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip
hop culture, including DJing and scratching, beatboxing, and
       instrumental tracks.

       Chiptune:
A chiptune, also known as chip music or 8-bit music, is
synthesized electronic music often produced with the sound chips
of vintage computers, video game consoles, and arcade machines,
as well as with other methods such as emulation.[1] In the early
1980s, personal computers became less expensive and more
accessible than they had previously been. This led to a
proliferation of outdated personal computers and game consoles
that had been abandoned by consumers as they upgraded to newer
machines. They were in low demand by consumers as a whole, and
not difficult to find, making them a highly accessible and
affordable method of creating sound or art. While it has been a
mostly underground genre, chiptune has had periods of moderate
popularity in the 1980s and 21st century, and has influenced the
       development of electronic dance music.

       Hardstyle:
Hardstyle is an electronic dance genre mixing influences from
hardtechno, hard house, hard trance, and hardcore. Hardstyle
typically consists of a deep, hard-sounding kick drum, intense
faded or reversed basslines accompanying the beat, a synth
playing a melody, and detuned and distorted sounds. It bears
some similarities to hard trance. Many hardcore artists produce
hardstyle tracks as well, and many newer Hardstyle tracks are
       written in compound time.

       Happy Hardcore:
Happy hardcore, also known as happycore,[1] is a genre of music
typified by a very fast tempo (usually around 160–180
BPM), often coupled with solo vocals and sentimental lyrics. Its
characteristically 4/4 beat "happy" sound distinguishes it from
most other forms of hardcore techno, which tend to be
"darker".[2] It is typically in a major mode, like Ionian or
Lydian. In its original incarnation, it was often characterized
by piano riffs, synthetic stabs and spacey effects. This genre
of music is closely related to the typically Dutch genre of
Gabber. Happy hardcore evolved from Breakbeat Hardcore around
1991–1993, as the original house music-based rave became
faster and began to include breakbeats, evolving into Oldschool
Jungle which evolved into Drum and Bass. Some of the most famous
artists of this genre include, Scott Brown, Darren Styles,
Hixxy, DJ Paul Elstak, Dune, Scooter, Party Animals, DJ Gammer,
and Charly Lownoise and Mental Theo.

       Dubstep:
Dubstep (/ˈdʌbstɛp/) is a genre of electronic
dance music that originated in South London, England, United
Kingdom. It emerged in the late 1990s as a development within a
lineage of related styles such as 2-step garage, broken beat,
drum and bass (jungle), and dub reggae.[1] In the UK the origins
of the genre can be traced back to the growth of the Jamaican
sound system party scene in the early 1980s.[1][2] The music
generally features syncopated drum and percussion patterns with
bass lines that contain prominent sub bass frequencies.

       Trance:
Trance is a genre of electronic dance music that developed in
the 1990s in Germany.[5] It is characterized by a tempo of
between 110 and 150 beats per minute,[5] repeating melodic
phrases,[5] and a musical form that builds up and down
throughout a track.[5] Trance is its own genre, but also will
include other styles of electronic music such as techno,[3]
       house,[1] pop,[3] chill-out,[3] classical music,[3]:16[4] and
       film music.[4]
One characteristic of trance is its use of aural dynamics. For
example, in most classic trance, a primary characteristic was a
soft mid-song breakdown,[3][5] beginning with and occurring
after the orchestration is broken down and the rhythm tracks
fade out rapidly, leaving the melody, atmospherics, or both to
stand alone for anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
Another common characteristic would be the use of vocals often
sung by a female who ranges from mezzo-soprano to soprano. Less
often, the female vocals may be in a grand, soaring, or operatic
style, which has been described as "ethereal female leads
       floating amongst the synths".[8]
