Is it possible and would it be of any benefit to film in
       negative?

A negative has all the dark areas reversed, in other words, the
lightest areas seen. This can be useful to make out detail in
deep shadows. Sooooo, I think it can be used to investigate
areas that appear to be active but are hard to see. almost all
photo processing programs will reverse an image with losing
       detail.
