Do streetlights go out when you pass beneath them? Perhaps you
are a Slider
A reader writes:
Around five years ago, I have noticed that at times while I am
driving down the road at night a street light will go out as I
am passing below it. It happens frequently and seems to be
happening more.
It has been giving me the creeps. If it happened only once or on
very rare occasions, I don't think I would have given it a
thought. However, it happens about once or twice a week. Could
it be some electronic thing or could it be something less
explainable?
The phenomenon is known as street lamp interference, or SLI, and
it possibly is a psychic event that is just beginning to be
recognized and studied. Like most phenomena of this type, the
evidence is almost exclusively anecdotal. I have received
several stories like the one above from readers.
Typically, a person who has this effect on streetlights - also
known as a Slider - finds that the light switches on or off when
he or she walks or drives beneath it. Obviously, this could
happen occasionally by chance with a faulty streetlight (you've
probably noticed that it's happened to you once in a while), but
Sliders claim that it happens to them on a regular basis. It
doesn't happen every time with every streetlight, but it occurs
often enough to make these people suspect that something unusual
is going on.
Very often, Sliders also report that they tend to have an odd
effect on other electronic devices. In letters I've received,
these people claim such effects as:
•Appliances such as lamps and TVs go on and off without being
touched.
•Lightbulbs constantly blow when the Slider tries to turn them
off or on.
•Volume levels change on TVs, radios, and CD players.
•Watches stop working.
•Children's electronic toys start by themselves when the SLIder
is present.
•Credit cards and other magnetically encoded cards are damaged
or erased when in their possession.

Yes I have heard of this and I am waiting for an scientific or
spiritual explanation.

I have the answers right here
•Appliances such as lamps and TVs go on and off without being
touched.- Lamps not plugged in correctly, remotes from other
room causes tv to go on or off
•Lightbulbs constantly blow when the Slider tries to turn them
off or on.-buying cheap bulbs. Don't go to the dollar store for
bulbs
•Volume levels change on TVs, radios, and CD players.-Same as
first one, remote from oter room or even neighbor can mess with
your tvs, radios or whatever you have.
•Watches stop working.-walked to close to a magnet
•Children's electronic toys start by themselves when the SLIder
is present.- dying batteries
•Credit cards and other magnetically encoded cards are damaged
or erased when in their possession.- Even the mightiest junkyard
magnet won't erase your card's data if exposure is brief, but
the little fridge magnet that can barely hold up that cute
picture of Fluffy will -- if the exposure is long enough.

This is by no means a situation of what this person is calling
SLI. The street light bulbs are very expensive. Coupling this
with cost cutting measures, they have a shut off bulit into them
to turn off a regular intervals to save on electricity and
lenghten the life of the light. With wattage being anywhere
between 35-1000 watts I doubt very highly that a person driving
by in their insulated and grounded car could effect the lighting
of street lights. Another thing to think of; if this is
happening at dawn or dusk the photo cells (what senses the
sunlight) of these lights very often can be influenced by cloud
coverage, low lying branches or even shadows from planes.
I would have to say that this is coincidence at best.
Appliances such as lamps and TVs go on and off without being
touched - An electrician should be called first of course. The
old touch lamps could have shorts or be over sensitive to
static.
Credit cards and other magnetically encoded cards are damaged or
erased when in their possession - When working at Sports
Authority, I cant tell you how many times people set their cards
down on the counter, RIGHT ABOVE the demagnitizer pad and guess
what, it demagnitized, leaving the card useless.
NOTE TO ALL - Dont put your cards on the counter at a retail
location sometimes the magnetic detectors are under the counter
top and will still getcha

I lived in Gainesville Florida for 8 years and there were
street lights that would turn off almost ever time I drove by.
This used to freak my wife out because as we drove along, the
lights would be responding as we went. It happened when I drove
the same route alone, but never when my wife drove the same way.
The lights there were standard incandescent lights, not the high
powered ones that are used in the Chicago area or here in
Tucson. I also had street lights of the same type respond when I
lived in Flagstaff and drove home along a country road home.
I hadn't thought about this for many years until reading you
post. The most resent surprise was having two quartz watches
stop within 10 minutes of each other. The black one is a day off
because I had not worn it for a month or two.
