       Our Cruise

If you don't mind, Pappy, I'm creating this topic so I can run
ay ideas off you since you are a [move]seasoned[/move] cruiser!
       (You, too, Mom!)
Our first port will be on the 13th at Tortola. As of now, our
plan is to venture out on our own to see The Baths at Virgin
Gorda. We feel confident going it solo because:
-all aboard time is 5:45pm and our goal is to board no later
       than 3pm.
-the next port of call is St. Thomas, which is less than 30
miles (by water) from port to port, so we could get back to the
ship rather easily if something crazy happened that somehow
       stranded us.
We will have to take a 30-minute ferry to the next island, then
a 10-minute taxi ride to the top of the baths. We plan to spend
at least a couple of hours there, then will do the same trip in
reverse back to our ship. I've read a lot of reviews (on Cruise
Critic, et al.) and this seems to truly be a don't-miss
excursion, so it's our strong Plan A. If weather or anything
else stops us, we have a Plan B to get off the ship and see a
few sights. That evening is Pirate Night, so should be a full
day! Glad we have 3 sea days to chill!
Any tips for doing a solo excursion?
Oh, this guy is currently on "our" cruise. (I've listened to his
podcast. He's not enjoyable to listen to, but I like his blog.)

PS. Dad, you should totally do
a cruise podcast. You have a great voice for podcasts.

PS. We save [glow=green,2,300]$600[/glow] doing this alone vs.
       the port adventure via Disney!!!

We've done excursions on our own many times. The main rule is
don't cut it even close. Hopefully the ship will clear and
you'll be able to get off quickly and be on your way. Make
CERTAIN you have your way back arranged in advance. I'm guessing
the ferries run on a schedule, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Just make sure you'll have a taxi for when you want to leave.
You're wise to get back early. Everyone else will be trying to
get back, too, so it could get hairy if you wait until the last
minute. You do NOT want to have to get to the next port of call
on your own with no place to spend the night, etc. The $600
you're saving will likely be chump change compared with what a
charter boat would cost to get you to the next port.
Sometimes we've walked off the ship and outside the gates of the
port and found someone local to take us around. We've not had a
bad experience yet. Your trip will be a tad different because of
       the ferry.
One other thing: is this a tender port or do you dock? If it's a
tender port, that adds another layer of difficulty getting back
onboard the ship. The ship will make very clear the "last tender
       back" time if they're used.
All tour operators know all about the ships' schedules. The only
wrench is if you have a vehicle breakdown. Not being a ship
tour, the ship won't know where you are. They will and do leave
folks at the dock. In Juneau just last week a guy was 15 minutes
late. The ship had already cast off. Too bad.
Looks like you've planned this out well, so you should be okay.

I really love the fish extenders and gifts you've put together.
Really creative and colorful. Looking like a festive cruise is
       coming up!
