I might try this someday, but how long does it take to make a
map that size?

That smaller map: about an hour or two. Larger, screen-sized
maps: a few weeks to months depending on your work rate and
level of detail; maybe more.
Bunni's Map: Six months and counting.

I know, I know...
For the information of everyone else: last July Bunni asked me
to help make her a map. 6 months later...yeah...
Steps 1-9 of the process are all right; it's once you get to the
mountains that it all becomes a bitch.

Man you work slow. It only took me about three days to do mine.
(mind you, that was three days of not doing much else)

The prototype for this method took roughly 27 days. It all
depends on how much time you can dedicate to it and whether or
not you get distracted easily by side projects (guilty :-\)...
