History of Aerl
For ease of reference all dates are recorded in the El Aresh
calendar. The term PH is used meaning pre humanity. The year is
split into four months, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
Winter is the longest month by one day lasting 92 days whereas
all other months last just 91.
2066PH-2071War of the Kinslain
2066PH (Spring)- Death of Karhand IV, who leaves behind two twin
sons Einar and Volan.
2066PH (Spring)- Volan makes the ceremonial journey to the isle
of kings to place Karhand in his final resting place. In his
absence Einar crowns himself king.
2066PH (Winter)- Einar returns from his duty to find his brother
atop the throne and himself an exile.
2066PH (Winter)- Einar marries Helga Stranar daughter of Aurst
Stranar the lord commander of the realm, taking an army for a
dowry.
2067PH (Spring)- The brothers first come to blows at the battle
of Highwood. Einar's army is camped among the trees on the
Highwood hillside. Volan set alight areas of the forest and
advances his troops forth into his brothers men. However Einar's
troops were not unprepared for an attack and caught the enemy so
their inevitable retreat would be into their own flames.
2067PH (Summer)- Volan captures Helga and holds her to ransom,
when her father, Aurst came to collect the ransom he murders
both father and daughter.
2068PH (Spring)- Volan's troops attempt to cross the Redford, a
canny skirmisher shoots the King's horse from beneath him and no
man among his disgruntled army saves him from drowning. He
drowns beneath the weight of his armour and mount.
2070PH (Winter)- Those few that remain loyal to Volan flee and
found the Tsardom of Novogski.
The Great Catastrophe
3042PH (Winter)- The Necromancer Maldrek raises the dead from
their graves.

Aerlic Armies
The Aerlic armies are small elite, mobile fighting groups
perfect for raiding. The armies are made of up a few key units.
Jarl's men
Officers who relay the Jarl's commands to the soldiers, they are
usually chosen from among the Jarl's family and retinue. A
Jarl's man takes responsibility for victory and defeat, should
he survive a battle he has lost he is expected to cast himself
into the waves as a tribute to the gods who led him to folly.
Most Jarl's men would rather risk death in combat than the self
sacrifice of defeat and so lead from the front.
Aerlic Warriors
The dwarfs of Aerl have a proud martial tradition and are taught
who to weild swords and axes from an early age, after he has
fought in at least five battles his beard his ritually trimmed
and he is given the title of warrior and accompanying wargear by
the Jarl. These dwarfs see themselves as an elite and as such
often retain their shortened beards. Few champions of any race
can claim to beat the Aerlic warriors in combat.
Ballista
All Aerlic warships are equipped with well crewed ballistas,
often they are brought with the raiders on their attacks as they
can provide invaluable fire support to the troops and help
remove some larger targets. The crews of such weapons are very
proffesional and efficient.
Longbeards
Those dwarfs who do not have the experience of the warriors and
their shorn beards are dubbed longbeards, these men are used as
skirmishes making use of bows to fire into enemy ranks and
ambush stronger foes. Longbeards are eager to prove they deserve
the respect of the veterans even if they lack the experience, as
such they are reckless and arogant but never the less an
invaluable asset on any battlefield.
