"And with this offering of flesh and blood of the man
the Mother was pleased, and so it was demanded that for the
continuing blessings upon our people a sacrifice of seven men
was to be given. So it was that winter after winter the flesh
and blood was returned to the Mother so that she would one day
make whole the slaughtered Father she did cut down. And when the
Father was made whole again the Sun would take in the Moon as
the Sea and Sky battered the earth, and the Father would unlock
the gates to Frelli and his Son would rise from his frozen
throne and cast the land of men into the longest winter. And as
man perished each would be judged on the scales of Hyrgotte, for
the men who stayed true and did not stray into the darkness they
would be permitted into the halls of Heligrad where they do
battle by day and feast at night, and when the Jurgen bellows
they will rise up for the final battle against the darkness to
determine who would inherit the new world."

Capital: Kjarnsbyrg (K-yarns-burg)
Population: ~440,000
Name of Race: Naard (S.) Naardi, the (P.) Naardian (Adj.)
Preferred Map Colour: Ice Blue
Race Facts: Look like Scandinavians, superior strength, hardy
people, long life expectancy (longest confirmed Naardi was the
Rune Sage Mjolnar Grimbeald at 346 years but due mostly to Rune
Mastery with the average being 160 years), Rune Magic Masters
(closely guarded secret, 300 known Rune Sages)
Trade Goods: Textiles, Weapons, Alcohol, Armour, metals,
precious stones, ships, dyes
Political Structure:
Konurtc Halfgart Muelnar (King of the Naardi)
Lonurtc Jorgmund Muelnar (Prince of the Naardi)
Husmal (Chiefs of the Gendi, provinces, loyal to the king)
Armal (Chiefs not loyal to the King but not against the
king, must pay a Gelding but can not have troops levied from
their houses)
The Naardi are an ancient people whose lineage traces back to
the beginning of the Unlaadi Saga (the Undying Saga, or history
ever happening) when the Asartian gods raised the first land
from the seas. The Naardi are a fierce warrior civilization who
have begun growing beyond the limits of their island. Their
prospects now lay on the shores of the Graastylig (The Big
Island, or main land), which has traditionally been their
targets of raids and plundering (this is called the Dreyfhollen
or Bloody Harvest). Konurtc (Khoe-Nurtz, King) Halfgart Muelnar
has assembled his armies and readied his ships to land on the
shores of the Graastylig and take what is theirs by the ancient
code of Valmalule (literally Inheritance by Strength, which
states that everything in the world belongs to the Naardi that
they can take and hold. This code can only be applied from
Naardi to Naardi in certain circumstances such as a Lonurtc
(prince) who is of fighting age inheriting a title and being
challenged should a third of his Husmal (lower chiefs loyal to
the king, not be confused with the Armal who are free houses
loyal to no king and enemy with none) challenge his inheritance.
The Naardi are also well known for their highly detailed stone
carvings which record their pictorial history and religion.
Carvings in Dreyfrokka (or Blood Rock) is considered the highest
honour as the stone in any large amount is rare and only found
in a small portion of the island. The Dreyfrokka is said to be
the coagulated blood of Mirkel, the Asartian god who was killed
defending the island from the Sergoth (the Frozen serpent of the
deep waters). The picture below is of the current Konurtc
Halfgart Muelnar as when he united the three largest Armali
houses under his leadership.

Rune Sages also hold a significant place amongst Naardian
society, numbering less than 500. These Rune Sages use their
ancient knowledge to impress powerful magic upon weapons,
armour, and other items. The most famous Rune Sage was Mjolnar
Grimbeald who was noted for powerful runes he placed upon the
weapons of the loyal Husmal. The sword carried by Halfgart
Muelnar is actually inscribed by Mjolnar Grimbeald and is said
to slice through the strongest metal and rock as if it were
butter. The Rune Sages also place temporary Runes of protection
on worthy warriors with special paints. The Rune Sages also act
as masters of the giants teaching certain Naardi how to control
the giants of the mountains with secret words. On occasion these
giants have been awoken by their masters and taken into battle,
levelling entire ranks of enemy warriors.
The army of the Naardi is composed of a small contingent of year
round warriors known as the Husfyrth, the House soldiers. These
men manned towers and forts while acting as guards for the
Husmal and the Konurtc. The second group was the Gerdfyrth,
these are local militias and men who normally attend the
Dreyfhollen and make up a larger number of the fighting force.
The third group is the Bondfyrth, these are freemen sworn to
fight for the Konurtc and Husmal but do not usually attend the
Dreyfhollen. The Bondfyrth are typically only called upon if the
volunteers fall short for a Summer Dreyfhollen but are still
trained and well armed by the Husmal and Konurtc. The final
group are the Arifyrth, these are men not sworn to any Konurtc
or Husmal but are allowed to fight for them by the Armal, the
kingless chiefs who are allowed to hold land. Mercenaries are
occasionally purchased for use as well, primarily the cavalry
arm. Two months before a Dreyfhollen a Serdi is sent to every
island, every Husmal, every town, and every Armal to announce
the season and the men gather at the decided location. Husmal
and Armal also go out on their own for Bloody Harvests but the
Husmal must pay a tribute to the Konurtc for use of his men,
ships, supplies, or blessings while the Armal may not use any
men from the Husmal or Konurtc without the Kornutc permission
and the payment of a tribute. Most participants in the
Dreyfhollen can expect to be able to raid at least a dozen
times, but thirty or forty raids is not unheard of. Below are
the soldiers and below that is the local area ruled and raided
by the Naardi warriors.

Unlaadi Saga
Fyrsi Saga
In the beginning there was the sea and the sky, and they lived
in peace with the wind between them. The ancient peace lasted
for a hundred thousand eons until the sea gave birth to Lolar
and Lolar swam for a thousand years before growing tired. With
his strength and will Lolar grasped the bottom of the sea and
raised the land out of it and this land was called Graastylig,
and Lolar planted his seed across Graastylig. Lolar lived in
peace with his home and tread across the land shaping mountains
and scooping out lakes from the land, and with the soil he took
to make the lakes he tossed it into the sea creating the
islands. Lolar grew lonely with only the sea and the wind as
friends so he forged a mountain so high to reach the sky, and
upon this mountain he courted the sky and their child was named
Milas, and she lived a thousand years until she too grew tired
of the sky, the wind, and the sea. Milas courted the land and
was mother to the creatures that walk the earth. Milas then
courted the sky and was mother of all the birds that flew with
the wind. Milas lived ten hundred more years before courting the
sea and was mother to all that swims in the waters. Milas carved
the rivers and raised the trees so that the creatures of the
land, sea, and sky could meet and court and so all the creatures
of the world lived for eons in peace. Lolar grew old and longed
for a son so he courted his sister Milas and their child was
named Wotan and he was a cruel child.
Wotan taught the creatures of the sea, the sky, and the land to
fight and kill and threw great rocks across the land. Wotan also
created great veins of gold and silver and hid them amongst the
iron in the mountains and under the ground. Lolar saw all his
son did and regretted his creation. He confronted Milas and was
to kill Wotan but Milas did slay him before he could strike down
Wotan. And Lolars blood flowed across the land in a great flood
and Milas tears drowned out a third of her creatures upon the
land. Wotan, seeing his mother distressed, hid away in the
mountains and created many caves and caverns to hide from her
anger. From the blood of Lolar was born a plethora of Asatri who
were made from the animals of the world that drank of his blood.
Wotan took many into his accompaniment whilst Milas took others
as her family. It was under Milas that Man was forged from the
wind, the sky, the sea, the earth, and the blood of Lolar. Wotan
then saw his mother weak and frail and did cast himself upon her
as she slept after her birth of Man. And from this courting
darkness was born and darkness did reign over man for a million
eons and Man was turned cold and evil as Milas slept. When Milas
awoke she saw what had become of her new children and she tasked
the sky and Wind to court and they did give birth to the Fae, or
Elves and Dwarves, who guided Man out of the darkness. Wotan
then forced himself upon the sky and the sky birthed a son and
the son was named Hagon and Hagon lived in perpetual turbulence,
fighting his instincts of destruction and trying to be calm.
Hagon grew tired and went into the sea where stayed, finding
solace away from his father. In the sea Hagon befriended his
mother Sky and uncle the Sea and in there he thrashes to this
day fighting against the influence of his father. And the
pantheon of the Asatri did live in perpetual feud as told in the
Sagas. And the Asatri of Milas built a grand city above the sky
and it was called Heligrad and they feast there with the fallen
warriors and worthy men. And the Asatri of Wotan forged
themselves a wastleland under the earth below the caves and
below the ground and this frozen land was called Frelli where
the unworthy and dishonored walk barefoot in the ice.

The Husmal and Armal
There are twenty Husmali, chiefs loyal to the Konurtc, with the
twenty-first Husmal being the Konurtc, or king. The Husmal each
rule over a particular province known as a Gendi, and rule
independently as they wish so long as they follow the few
national laws and codes that unite the Naardi. The Husmal also
raise their own forces for Dreyfhollen but pay a small tribute
tax to the Konurtc. When the season of Dreyfhollen is over the
food raised in the Gendi is inspected by the Husmal's inspectors
and then the Konurtc inspectors, known as the Merthseers and
Komerthseers respectively. Should the numbers match and the
people of the Gendi have enough food to feed themselves the
Konurtc will then take as much as one-tenth. This is called the
Logahoond and the Konurtc decides what to do with it, typically
a good king in good times will either give it to the people of
the province or place it in their storehouses for winter. In
dark times and with bad kings it has been known to go to his
house.

The Armal number eight small houses total and have refused to
pledge allegiance to the Konurtc. Historically these houses have
been isolated in the mountains and control a small supply of the
iron, enough to force the Husmal to work with them peacefully.
Being so far from the coast means the Armal are forced to rent
ships from the Husmal and therefore pay a large tribute to them,
of which a third goes to the Konurtc. The Armal are not usually
aggressive but the few that have attacked the Husmal have had
their houses destroyed and salted with their names stricken from
every place, leading to a very lopsided recording of history.
During the Conquest of the Seven Peaks the Konurtc demanded
three times that the seven Armal surrender themselves to the
power of the Konurtc, three of them did and are now part of the
Husmal, the four that did not had their men and women slain and
children cast off the mountains, the four peaks were then
divided between the turned Armal with the fourth being left to
the strongest of the three. To this day the mountain has given
no ore due to the ongoing fight for its deadly cliffs.

The Dreyfhollen Sagas
The Saga of the Great Harvest of Husmal Lodi Olig
It was four hundred and thirty-six summers since the Old Ones
had left for their cities when Husmal Lodi of the House of Olig
assembled his warriors numbering over a thousand. His ships
numbered over a Dreca (100) and were adorned with images of the
Great Serpents in iron both ahead and atail the vessels. The
great sails measured ten men in height and twenty in width and
upon them the image of House Olig was sown into them, that of a
great raven with seven eyes and four wings spread out. The black
ravens caught the wind with ferocity and the white sails did
urge the ships from their chains aground into the Father Sea.
Husmal Lodi knew of this sign and rallied his men together, one
thousand of them clad in the strongest coats of mail ever forged
at that time. Husmal Lodi armed each of them with a shield
measuring two and a half men wide, standing at the throat of
most men when sat upon the ground. Upon each shield the
seven-eyed raven was painted on a white sky and Husmal Lodi
promised glory and fortune for each warrior that carried this
sigil. With the approval of the Konurtc Lodi boarded his ships
and sailed with the wind using no instruments of standard
navigation, he let Mother Wind push them to their fortunes.
Nine days at sea they were when from the head of the lead ship a
great blast broke out across the sea as the horns sounded. Lodi
arose from his meal to look out across the ocean, and there
ahead of them was the Graastylig. A long season of ice had held
them back and he hoped that this would be worth the wait in the
harvest. A second rumble of blasts came from the lead ship
signalling that the coast was indeed populated. The warriors
prepared themselves for battle and took their positions, ready
to launch themselves from the ship once it had gotten close
enough for them to wade through the water. As they neared ever
closer Husmal Lodi eyed the Green banner of the Frajian king, he
knew he was in for a rich harvest. The Frajian people were very
similar to the Naardi but weaker and certainly not built for
fighting, as they are now. A small group of figures gathered on
the shore, spears could be seen sticking up like small trees
amongst them, but Lodi's warriors welcomed a good fight finally.
The ships were finally with in range for the archers and the
drums aboard the ships began to bellow with the horns creating a
mass of sound that shook the Frajian militia. Their soft leather
armour would be easily shredded by the iron of the Naardi
weapons. With single order the archers, numbering forty, let
loose a volley of arrows into the sky that fell with great haste
onto the defenders who coward under their flimsy shields of
thatch. A great number were killed and a larger number were sent
fleeing from the shores. The remaining militia numbered less
that four hundred and stood together in a wall, and thus showed
that the weak Frajian could learn to fight. Alas they would
still be no match for the warriors who leaped forth from their
serpent ships with an anger and scream rarely heard from men.
This is what gave the warriors of Lodi time to form their own
wall as the Frajians did stand in place like statues, and when a
two thirds of the Olig warriors formed the remaining Frajians
fled into the town. With the haste of hungry wolves after a
plump meal the warriors gave chase and charged forth into the
town with permission of Lodi. Resistance was made futilely by
the Frajians who were cut down, their houses burned, and crops
harvested by the warriors who feasted like a Konurtc each.
The next a great loot was gathered from the town and surrounding
villages and thirteen ships were loaded so full that water
threatened to drag the treasure down into its own grasp. Husmal
Lodi ordered the ships to return the harvest and sail back for
another load. Twenty days passed as Lodi's men marched farther
and farther inland bringing back great hauls of gold, silver,
spices, jewellery, and many other items of value. It was after
this time that Lodi did return home with great stores of wealth
and paid his tribute to the Konurtc and each man was given their
share, and with this Husmal Olig was the richest House for many
years. This was recorded as the greatest Harvest and is regarded
in Saga as the greatest a Husmal can reach in wealth. Every man
who lived in honour and died with honour who attended this
Dreyfhollen is said to have a special seat in the great halls of
Heligrad.

Religion of the Naardi, Asartian Paganism
The Naardi people have a strong and ancient religion that rules
over every aspect of their lives, all in the hope that will be
worthy to feast in the Great Halls of the Asatri. Based upon
blood and flesh the Naardi take part in human and animal
sacrifices as well as numerous offerings through out the year.
The interpreters of the gods are called Seers who use a special
and secret form of Rune magic to translate what the gods say.
Many times through history a Husmal has asked the Seer of his
fate, and to his dismay it came true. Other times grave warnings
have been passed to the Naardi people only to be ignored and
great pains have been inflicted upon their houses. The story of
the gods has been passed down from Seer to Seer and Bjardi to
Bjardi, the keepers of tales and song. The greatest Saga is the
Unlaadi Saga which is the Naardi history from time beginning to
this day. It is their form of keeping record of history. Great
stone tablets are also risen to capture in time forever great
deeds of men. In the Hall of Unsulla is the Graasplietling, a
tapestry constantly being added to each day and taken care of by
the Maidens of Milas. It is rumoured that the tapestry, when
completely unfolded, could cover the whole of Graastylig.
Asartian Paganism centers around a patriarchal society with
women still holding a strong positions in the family and
community. When men are away from the home the women is charged
with all his duties and as such typically treated equally. Women
and men are equally expected to defend the home and family while
women specifically are tasked with all the manners of the home
and family and supposed to ensure all is well. Unlike many other
cultures women of age and who are unmarried are permitted to
take up the banner of their Husmal and fight in the Shieldwall.
These women are the Warriors of Milas, or Milastriars. The final
interesting point on women in Naardi society is that they may
own land and property, and even become Husmal on rare occasions.
Probably the most famous Saga is that of the Lottertyr, or Final
Battle, in which all the forces of the Gods clash in battle over
who will rule the earth in the final days of mortal man. This
Saga is usually the first heard by children of the Naardi and
outsiders. This battle is what all Naardi peoples ready
themselves for and as such are expected to die with honour and
no fear, for when the Lottertyr does come they must stand
without fear in the Great Shieldwall. It is said in the
Lottertyr that Milas will watch from above the fields of battle
as Wotan wages war against his father Lolar, and as the battle
rages she will strike down both her husband and her son in a fit
of rage leaving both sides commanded by only the greatest
warriors of all men.

Beasts and Creatures
The Frost Giants of the north are a ferocious creature tamed
thousands of years ago by the Jornthurs, or Giant Kings. With
mastery of Rune Magic specifically designed to control them, the
Jornthurs have placed the Frost Giants in a deep sleep, chained
beneath the northern mountains. When awoken they listen to only
the commands from their Jornthurs and destroy without question
all in their way. The Frost Giants appear as Naardi men but
stand fifty men high and wield whole trees as clubs. Their
strength is that of a thousand men but their brain like that of
a child. Rarely are these Giants awoken but when they are their
enemies tremble in fear. Only two hundred Frost Giants slumber
now, and all the female Frost Giants dead so that should they
ever be freed they can not breed an army.
The Wyvern is an ancient serpent that flies both the skies and
seas and is also chained and commanded by the Rune Sages, called
Drakajorns. The Drakajorn command the few Wyverns with secretive
words much like the Jornthurs. The Wyverns number six and sleep
at the crest of the highest mountains in Naardoskia. Even rarer
are the wyverns roused from their slumber for their great
devastation is difficult to control at times. The Wyverns are
the length of three Great Whales and look similar to black
snakes with thick scales armouring their bodies. Their wings
span out far and their two legs end in massive clawed feet.
Their heads look like alligators and their teeth each measure a
man in size.
Grumbar are the considered the most dangerous creature hunted by
the Naardi, and each Husfyrth in Halfgart Muelnars Husmal must
kill one and bring back its hide and head. Standing two of the
largest Naardi high, the Grumbar resembles an oversized gorilla
with very light blue hair. Its teeth are like razors and the
claws swing through iron as if it were warm butter. The Grumbar
resides in caves along the mountains and are fairly rare,
sticking to themselves and seldom wanting of human contact, but
when threatened they fight viciously and without mercy.
