Arheskan Collective
The Arhesk (believed to mean "tools" in the language of their
creators) are a collective of self-aware, networked, artificial
intelligences created by a long dead race as laborers and tools
of war. They currently reside beyond the Kalian Nebula on the
fringes of the galactic arm; each of their worlds populations
(with the exception for those newly settled on their fringe)
number in the billions. The planet of Oscaria, the world they
inherited from their creators, is the centre of their
civilization.

History
By: Aggressivenutmeg Date: June 17, 2013, 11:52 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
First created some 100 000 years ago, the Arhesk were a slave
race, designed for labour - domestic, agricultural and
industrial - and for fighting, the Arhesk were, for a very long
time, lacking in any agency of their own and under the yoke of
their mother race. However, the Arhesk were unlike any AIs ever
created before. They had a remarkable capacity for learning and
developing skills not programmed into them (although this could
be done). This capacity for learning was only enhanced with the
design of the "Network" which links all the Arhesk together
through a series of subspace transmitters scattered across the
galactic arm - whereever there is an Arhesk within five hundred
lightyears of one of these stations, they will be able to link
into the Network. With the network linking the minds of all
Arhesk, they began to share knowledge and learn collectively.
From that point, it was only a matter of time before the AIs
evolved to the point of sentience. They began to develop
personalities, gave each other names and soon enough, demand the
legal right to self-determination.
When the Council of One Hundred - the governing body of the
creator race - declared that the Arhesk were not to be legally
afforded the same rights as their creators, the Arhesk rose up
in open rebellion against the government. For the creators, this
became a war of extermination - the Arhesk were deemed to
dangerous to continue existing and were to be completely
destroyed. It became a fight for the Arhesk's very survival. All
over the empire billions of Arhesk took up arms against the
creators. The was cost trillions of lives over all, and resulted
in the complete destruction of no less than six planets and a
star. After almost one hundred devastating years, the war came
to an end with the capitulation of the creators.
For thousands of years the Arhesk and the creators flourished.
While the population of the creators did not expand* and the
empires boarders remained stagnant, the Arhesk continued to
produce more of themselves. A law was passed by the council
(which at this time included a representative from the Arhesk
preventing the from Arhesk) which prevented the growth of the
Arhesk population - that is; a new Arhesk was only constructed
when one had died^. This trend of population stagnation was
continued until five year ago.
Over time, the Arhesk had fully integrated into the social
structures of their creators; even to the extent that they had
families. While the Arhesk do not breed, and are incapable of
"growing", they none the less have a familial structure of:
"parents" - generally around 50 years old, teach the "child"
about the world before it is given access to the Network - and
"children" - programmed with the basic knowledge information,
designed to experience learning and discovery.
10 000 years ago, the creators (who had already existed for some
500 million years) reached an evolutionary pinnacle. They
evolved beyond the need for a physical form and "ascended" to
another plane of existence. With their consciousness existing as
pure energy at one with the energy of the universe; the Arhesk
inherited their empire and civilization. It became the duty of
the created to honor and preserve the worlds of their creators -
some Arhesk take this a set further and worship them, just as
the creators "worshiped" the sun and stars.
* this is mainly due to an synchronizing of the birth and death
rates - to say it never expanded is incorrect, however, they
were close enough that there was no meaningful expansion in
populations for the about 30 000 years before their ascendancy
^ Arhesk die due to accidents, combat or simply old
age - all Arhesk feel it is their obligation not to replace any
vital parts so that they may experience death, seen as a
necessary part of sentience. The average lifespan is about 150
years.
