       OK guys I admit it, I'm stuck.. Any ideas you can throw my way
       to get my imagination moving again would be much appreciated

       I love alien invasion stories and movies, and have seen / read
       many of them.
       A key element is that who ever holds the highest ground
       inevitably wins, if the enemy can drop debris on Earth at will
       they will win.
       Aliens usually have a reason to invade which gives resistance
       something to fight against. They may be after the planet, the
       people, natural resources, etc. Whatever they are after is
       something resistance fighters can impede.
       Aliens are usually shown to misunderstand or have lower
       expectations of humans. Allowing human perseverance and
       sacrifice to win or unexpected human technologies to alter the
       expected balance of the fight.
       The earth itself can be a defense against the aliens as they are
       an intruding pathogen in gaia's system it will send it's
       antibodies to defeat the enemy.
       Alien invaders with a strong military mind set will hit key
       strategic targets with heavy weapons these would be primary
       military bases and command posts, capitol cities and depending
       on their goal major cities. This would followed up by hits on
       power generation facilities and road and rail hubs.
       Some aliens use human allies to assist them especially if they
       control territory on earth. They may also take hostages to
       manipulate people or use as human shields.
       Aliens typically take turf appropriate to their home
       environment, cold lovers would take northern Canada, Russia,
       north Europe and the poles. while jungle aliens would take
       Africa and south america, and desert critters would take the
       Sahara and middle east and establish colonies in the other hot
       deserts like the Gobi and the west US deserts. Turf outside
       their environment zone they attempt to terraform.
       Alien landings are typically enforce with support from space
       ships, aircraft, heavy vehicles and infantry. (Battle of LA)
       Don't forget the impact of civil collapse and failure of
       infrastructure. Also the potential of the use of EMP by the
       enemy.
       Just a few ideas to help.
