Paul Anders was kept back in his seat as the MT-83A Rhino shot
through Earth’s atmosphere, and he was released after they
cleared it. Anders and the other four Marine recruits gazed out
the windows at Anter Supply Station, the largest dock in the
system. As they came closer to the station, other Rhinos and
MSA-76 Defiant fighters flew all around them, in every
direction. The new recruits got their first glimpse of a Polk
Class Battleship, but Anders couldn’t read the name before it
got blocked by a orbital shipyard repairing a Atlas Class
Frigate. “Delta 2-3 on approach, permission to dock station?”
asked the pilot over his headset.
“Delta 2-3, head over to Airlock 67, you are cleared to land in
Hanger 67-A.”
“Roger that, station, starting docking procedure.”
The pilot reached up and flipped a switch, and started heading
for the airlock with the big white 67, which began to open up
for the Rhino. They flew into the airlock, the room was
pressurized, and the other door opened into the hanger. The
pilot touched down on the left side of the hanger, where there
was a large A. The rear door opened, and Anders saw a bustling
hanger deck. A squad Republic Federation Marines waiting for
their assignment chatted while sitting on some ammo crates, an
Argos Class Transport was being loaded with rations and
supplies, and a MSA-76 Defiant was being prepped for launch. The
new recruits made their way over to the forward elevator, and
went down to the Weapons and Assignment deck. The doors opened
to a group of veteran Marines and Sailors talking, who looked
condescendingly down upon the new Republic Federation Recruits.
They walked closer together, and made their way to the
Assignment room. They all lined up at the kiosk. Anders was at
the end of the line. The Petty Officer behind the desk asked for
their RFID cards, and the first recruit handed the Petty Officer
his card. He scanned it and said “Decker, B. RFS Hellbender,
Frigate. Go to hanger 52-B and get on Rhino Bravo 4-6.” He went
on his way as the next recruit stepped up, and she handed him
her card and he scanned it. “Berger, S” he said. “RFS Acker,
Cruiser. Hanger 24-A, Rhino Kilo 1-3.” Next. “Hayes, K. RFS
Ironheart, Battleship. Hanger 13-A, Rhino Echo 3-9.” Hayes
turned around with a smirk on his face. Battleship, thought
Anders, lucky bastard. Next. “Kowalski, R. RFS Demon Slayer,
Frigate. Hanger 52-C, Rhino 4-6.” Anders stepped up and he
handed in his card. “Anders, P” said the Petty Officer, “RFS
Mystic, Corvette. Hanger 72-A, Rhino Alpha 1-1.” Anders face
dropped. A corvette, are you kidding me, he thought. He drudged
over to the elevator, and took it to the hanger level. From
there he took the shuttle over to Hanger 72-A. He was the last
stop on the shuttle, and the only one left on it. He stepped off
the shuttle and walked over to the Rhino, with the sign Alpha
1-1. It was the only Rhino in the Hanger. He stepped in through
the back hatch, and it closed immediately after. “Hey!” he said
to the Crew Chief, “aren’t there other recruits coming?”
“Anders right? You are the only one scheduled, we are leaving
right now.” said the Crew Chief. He stepped into the cockpit and
the Rhino lifted up off the ground and went through the airlock,
and out into the row docked ships. Anders looked out the window
and saw a tremendous battleship docked closest to the station.
The white letters read RFS Ironheart, and he sulked back into
his seat. As the rows passed, the ships got smaller and smaller,
from Acker Class Cruisers, to Mengan Class Destroyers, to Atlas
Class Frigates, and finally, the Impala Class Corvettes. The
Rhino approached the last ship in the docks, and he thought that
must be the RFS Mystic. A small, three engine ship, with a crew
of only 75 men and women. Well, this is going to be crappy tour
of duty, he thought.
Anders picked up his head as he walked out of the rear hatch of
the Rhino onto the small hanger deck. By the main doorway stood
an officer in his active duty fatigues. He approached the man
and saluted him saying “Private Paul Anders reporting for duty,
sir”. As the man saluted back he said “At ease Private. I’m
Commodore Colton, commander of Naval Squadron Kilo-India. But
I’m sure you knew that already. I’ll show you around the ship,
and we are leaving for the Eridani system tomorrow morning, so
best get acclimated with the ship before then.”
He started walking down the hallway. Anders looked back to see
that the Rhino was gone, and he hurried along side the
Commodore. “I heard a lot about you Anders. Like that you’re an
excellent weapons controller right?”
“Yes, sir.”
“That good to hear. Our weapons controller got sick during a
patrol, and we had to end it early to get him back here. So,
you’re his replacement.” By this time they made it to the bridge
on the top of the ship. There was a console in the center, with
stations on the walls, and big windows that looked upon the
station from a distance. Colton went to the console, and pressed
the edge of the top, and an A.I. figure came up. “Victoria, what
is the status of the rest of the Squadron.”
“Commodore, the Belton, Destiny, and Compano all report being
fully refueled and restocked. The Banshee reports being
restocked and is almost done refueling.”
“Good. We should be able to depart on time then. Anders, this
is your station, the one closest to the console. You will report
here whenever Victoria tells you to.” He hands Anders a small
pager. “You will keep this on you at all times. We can’t afford
you to be late to your post, ever, because it would mean that we
would be virtually defenseless until you arrived. Tomorrow is
especially important. We are traveling to the Planet Ingow to
support some ground assault on a Galactic position, and we will
be providing fire support. I’ll tell you the details tomorrow.
But for now, go get some rest. McCarthy, show Anders around his
new home.”
The next morning, Anders was called into the Bridge by A.I.
Victoria. “Good morning Private” she said as he walked in. “I
asked for you to come up for you to get to know our equipment.
All of our lives depend on it you know.”
“Yea, I kinda figured” he said.
“Take your time, just don’t take too long” she said
sarcastically. “The Commodore wants to leave on schedule, so you
have more or less an hour to play around with your new toys.
Have fun!” And with that she disappeared into the ship. He sat
down at his station and gazed over the controls. He thought
about his basic training with these systems, and pressed the top
red button. A diagram of the ship came up on his screen,
highlighting where the different weapon stations were and their
statuses. He pressed the blue button next to it, and a message
saying ‘Weapon System Online’ was displayed on his screen. He
pressed the button saying ‘Activate’, and the various weapons
opened out and were ready to fire. He remembered now. The ship
was armed with 2 forward firing high powered 120mm cannons, 4
50mm close defense turrets, two in the front, and one on each
side of Engine 3. It also has one ‘Hellbringer’ cannon on the
underside of the ship that fires a 210mm round into the planet
below. He deactivated the weapons and turned them offline when
Commodore Colton walked into the Bridge. “Anders, we are about
to depart with the rest of the Squadron. I’m going to need you
to stay here, standard procedure when making jumps.”
“Yes, sir” said Anders
“Victoria, initiate undocking procedure.”
“Undocking from station now, Commodore.”
“All hands” said Colton over the PA system, “preparing to jump
in two minutes”
A.I. Victoria turned the ship towards the darkness of deep
space. “Engines prepped Commodore. Just waiting for ships to
reach formation” she said.
“All ships in formation Commodore. Just say the word.” said
Victoria a moment later. The Commodore looked back at the
station, then said “All ships, initiate warp drives.” And with
that, Anders was on his first combat mission.
The metal shields over glass windows were lifted, as the
squadron arrived at the planet Ingow. Similar to Earth, Ingow
had more land mass, and plenty of it was rolling plains. After a
minute at gazing at the planet, Colton turned on the PA system.
“All hands, we have made a successful jump to the planet Ingow.
From here we will fly right over it’s atmosphere and pummel a
Galactic fortress that is holding our boys up on the surface.
Our targets will be spotted by MSA-76 Defiant launched from
Baldwater Space Fighter Base located on the planet‘s surface.
This should be a cut and dry mission, but everyone should be
ready for anything. Commodore out.” Colton looked over at
Anders. “Bring all weapon systems online Anders.”
“Expecting trouble, sir?” asked Anders.
“I want to be ready just incase anything goes down. Remember,
Galactic forces still think that they own this system.”
“Yes, sir.” Anders pressed the blue button again and the
message saying ‘Weapons Systems Online’ popped-up. “All Weapons
Online, sir”.
The Mystic, Belton, Destiny, Banshee, and Compano all moved
into position outside the planet’s atmosphere. “Kilo-India
Squadron, this is Corporal Murran of Baldwater Command. We have
dispatched 14 MSA-76 Defiants to mark targets for you.”
“Roger that, Anders, activate the ‘Hellbringer’.” With the
press of a button, the ‘Hellbringer’ cannon extended from the
bottom of the ship.
“Kilo-India, all seven targets have been marked, can you
confirm, over?”
“I see seven targets, sir” said Anders.
“Targets confirmed Command. Give us the order to fire” said
Colton.
“Fire at will! The ground assault will move up when you are
done, over”
“Roger that. Open fire!” Anders fired the first shot, then the
rest of the squadron followed. The targets were destroyed in
less than thirty seconds.
“We have confirmed hits Kilo-India. Great shots!”
“Roger that command, we will stick around if you need us” said
Colton.
Anders watched the battle unfold through his view finder.
Republic Federation ground forces overwhelmed the fortress walls
as transport craft landed fresh troops deep inside the base. But
the radio called the Commodore. “Kilo-India, radar is detecting
a faint reading near your position over.”
“Roger that, Collins, do you see that also?”
The radio operator squinted at the screen.
“Yes sir, faint contact.”
“Anders, activate all weapons systems. Victoria, bring the ship
to alert. Calling all ships. This is Commodore Colton, be
advised, possible enemy contact using stealth in our area of
operations.”
The bridge fell silent as the crew starred out into space
waiting for something to happen. Then, what looked like a
electric currents appeared, and a ships was behind it.
“Galactic Destroyer! Anders, weapons free. Fire at will!”
screamed the Commodore. But before he could squeeze a shot off,
the Galactic Premier Class Destroyer fired at the Compano, and a
small explosion rocked the end of the ship.
“This is the Compano, we have lost our number two engine.
Repeat, we have lost our number two engine!” screamed the
Captain.
“Captain, land your vessel at Baldwater, we will cover you from
here” said Victoria calmly.
As the Compano dove down and tried to get through the planets
atmosphere, Anders mind slowed down, and he was able to tune out
the Commodore yelling “Fire! Fire! Fire!” He realized that the
destroyer’s link to the engines were weak, and he fired the
120mm cannons on the link. The Compano had successfully gotten
through the atmosphere and continued on route for an emergency
landing while the destroyer’s rear was enveloped in small flash,
then a massive explosion. The explosion tore the engines form
the hull, and the ship broke apart as the interior sections were
being sucked into space. The ship went black, and few escape
pods were seen.
“Commodore, the Compano landed safely at Baldwater, and only
minor injuries were sustained” said Victoria. A cheer went
through the bridge from the good news. “Also” she said, “that
was the RFS Mystic’s first confirmed kill, and the first time a
corvette destroyed a larger vessel I believe”. An even bigger
cheer was heard throughout the entire ship. The new recruit
saved us, they said. One of the women in the bridge kissed
Anders.
“Victoria” said the Commodore, “tell Fleet Command what Anders
did, we’re going to have to stay here for a while.”

Small addition to the piece, had a lot of work this week
The next morning, Commodore Colton informed the crew that
Navy Brass was visiting the Mystic. “Fleet Admiral O’Connor will
be present, so I want everyone on their best behavior.
Especially you Victoria” he said sharply to the A.I.
“Of course sir” she said with a small smirk.
“Collins, I want the radar on, just in case Galactic forces try
anything funny. Baldwater Command is also searching the skies,
and has armed their Surface-to-Orbit Missiles. You see or hear
anything, you tell me immediately.”
“Yes sir.”
“Commodore, the Admiral’s destroyer is approaching our
position.” said Victoria. Floating over the planet, six Mengan
Class Destroyers approached the four Corvettes of Kilo-India.
The center Destroyer launched a Rhino that was headed toward the
Mystic. When it landed in the small hangar, the Commodore
announced “All hands, Officer on deck” over the PA, and the crew
saluted the Admiral as he walked by. He stepped onto the bridge,
and all the Marine and Sailors stationed there stood at
attention. The Admiral walked over to the Commodore, and after
salutes, said “Well done Colton, I wish I could have seen it
myself. I never thought a squadron of Corvettes would ever
destroy a Galactic Destroyer.”
“Well sir, it was actually Private Anders who got the kill,
without him we would have all been turned to dust.” said Colton
“Of course” he turned to Anders “Magnificent marksmanship son.
Where did you attend school?”
“Umm, McMurran Naval Academy, sir” Anders said nervously.
“I’ll be sure to tell them the good news, Private”
“Umm, sir” said the Commodore, “Maybe the rank of Private is
unsuitable for Anders, after what he did.”
“Oh, yes. Congratulations, Lieutenant Anders. You deserve the
promotion, job well done son” said the Admiral. He turned to the
Commodore “ As for you, Commodore, I am assigning three Atlas
Class Frigates to your Squadron. I know you can make good use of
them.”
“Thank you, sir. We’ll give ‘em hell. Attention!” All the crew
stood at attention as the Admiral walked down to his Rhino in
the hangar.
“Commodore, three friendly contacts” said Collins.
“Commodore Colton, this is Fleet Captain Anderson, Commander of
Alpha-Zula Squadron, on board the RFS Hellbender. The frigates
Hellbender, Harrisdale, and Selton are all under your command,
sir”
“Roger that Captain. Glad you could join us,” said Victoria.
“Enter standard orbiting procedure for now, we are waiting for
the Compano to come out of repair, which should take
approximately 2 two days.”
Colton got their new orders the new day. He stared at
his screen and said “Holy hell, what have we gotten ourselves
into”.

Thread raise!
I've gotten back into the mood of writing this story, even
though I have college apps to do
The crew of the RFS Mystic eating lunch at 1200 hours
over Ingow when the Commodore stepped in. At once, the crew
stood at attention. “At ease,” said the Commodore. “I have been
informed by Navy Brass that we have been ordered to the Planet
Arctium. I think we all know that Arctium is held by the
Anarchist forces. There, we along with the rest of the squadron
will provide ground support for our ground army to overrun
several Anarchist bunkers and destroy what’s left of their
fleet. We will jump there at 1600 hours sharp.”
“But sir,” said a Lieutenant, “aren’t their bunkers too deep
for our cannons to take out?”
“Right, but we have a plan for that, Lieutenant” said the
Commodore. “Our 50mm cannons will be programmed with
low-attitude targeting systems, LATS for short, to pummel the
surface defenses, along with the rest of the corvettes.
“Sir.” said Ander, “are you saying that we are engaging enemy
ground forces in atmosphere?”
“Yes, Anders. I know that’s makes us vulnerable to attack form
enemy ships, but that’s what the frigates are for. They will
sweep the skies. Any other questions?” The room was silent.
“Good. Now lets going people, we all got jobs to do.” And with
that the mess hall exploded with movement of sailors and
marines.
The blast shields opened over the glass to a rocky, snow
covered planet. After establishing communications with ground
control, the Commodore announced they were landing at Negelenor
Space Port. “The frigates will stay out of atmosphere and
provide support if needed” he said. After the corvettes were
well in the atmosphere, a call from ground control came out.
“Commodore Colton, this is Negelenor Space Port, we have
detected three enemy SOM sites that have emerged from bunkers. I
repeat three SOM sites!”
“Anderson, get your frigates out of range!” yelled the
Commodore to the Fleet Captain.
“Changing course, all ships clearing range of SOMs!” said the
captain.
“SOMs are armed” said the controller.
“Get out of there!” yelled the Commodore. After a few seconds
of silence a call came through.
“All ships clear of SOMs. I repeat all ships are clear” said
the captain. The Commodore gave a sigh of relief. All of his
ships were safe. SOMs can’t target in atmosphere.
The ship’s officers had a meeting at the bridge after they
landed at Negelenor. “Alright, our mission has changed. We first
eliminate the SOM sites. They are exposed because our frigates
are on the edge of their range. Then we target the surface
defenses and entrances to the bunkers. We also just got news
that a squadron of three Ziner Class Cutters have been launched.
This complicates our mission. It is vital that we eliminate the
SOMs quickly so the frigates can engage the Cutters. After that
we will resume the rest of the mission. I’m counting on all of
you to…”
“Commodore!” said Victoria suddenly, “Negelenor has spotted
enemy forces approaching the space port. They are ordering all
able bodied sailors and marines equip their armor and weapons
and report to the Eastern launch pad. The ship will be
programmed in the meantime.”
“Alright, you heard her! I want all marine squad commanders to
assemble their fire teams. Colonel Harding, I’m putting you in
charge of my sailors. Bring them all back in one piece.”
“Yes sir!” said the Colonel.
“As soon as the guns are programmed you will return
immediately. I’d like to get off the ground as soon as possible”
said the Commodore. “Now, move out!”
Anders put on his RFNA-2 armor configuration as fast as he
could, grabbed as much ammo as he could carry, and slung his
MR-54B rifle over his shoulder. He ran out over the tarmac, and
he saw through his visor that several hundred sailors and
marines were doing the same. He reached where Colonel Harding
was standing, with fifty other sailors. “Ladies and Gentleman,
for most of you, this is your first taste of combat. Keep a
level head, and listen to your superiors. These rebels aren’t
well trained, but they’re ballsy. We will be in the trenches on
the southeast side of the port, along with the rest of
Kilo-India’s sailors and marines, with elements of the 4th
Armored Division providing support. The main rebel offensive
will be on the Eastern side of the port, where the 584th
Infantry Division is stationed. They are hardened and should
hold, which will force some of the rebel forces come to our
positions. We must hold at all costs. Let’s move out!” The group
of sailors ran across the tarmac to the trenches in the
Southeast. Multiple vehicles rolled up, including two ISA-32G
Caiman Infantry Tanks and several ISV-45A Castle Infantry
Carriers. The Caiman had extraordinary armor, with a mediocre
gun, 75mm AVMW-67 Cannon. The Castle was armed with a dual 20mm
anti-aircraft gun traversed horizontally to devastate infantry.
Anders looked down the trench to see many white-helmeted sailors
and gray-helmeted marines waiting for something to happen. The
ground shook as the rebels approached.
The sounds of gunfire and artillery were heard farther east,
where the main offensive was taking place. Reports came in that
the 584th was holding fast, and the enemy advance had been
halted for the time being. This allowed MSA-76 Defiants and
SAFF-87B3 Striker Stealth Fighters to bomb the now stationary
rebels. Then the inevitable, they started moving south, right to
where the marines and sailors of Kilo-India squadron were
stationed. Colonel Harding spotted the enemy forces closing in,
and projected the targets he saw onto the HUD of all the
infantry and vehicle gunners. As the enemy came closer, the
Caimans opened up first, then the Castles, then the infantry.
Rebel troops kept getting closer, no matter how many rounds
Anders and the rest of the troops put down range. Anders heard
the cries for ammo, and he ran down the line.
Collins, the radar operator, “how many are there?”
“I don’t know,” said Anders “but here is some ammo. Short
bursts Collins.” He returned to his position near the Colonel.
An enemy light vehicle charged towards Anders’ position, as a
Caiman blasted it with a 75mm slug. The wreckage of the vehicle
came hurling towards Anders. He made mere seconds to duck out of
the way as the flaming hull rolled over the trench. He could
feel the heat even inside his armor. As he looked up he heard
the Colonel yell “Keep firing! Don’t you dare stop!” at sailors
and marines alike. The enemy was close than ever. Anders fired
at an enemy Anti-Tank missile team attempting to set up. The
enemy kept getting closer. Anders marked the team as a priority
target on central HUD display. He ducked down to reload when a
rebel soldier jumped into the trench. He stared at the
defenseless Anders, with a malevolent grin, when a bullet went
through his head. Anders, stunned, looked to his right to see
the Colonel with the smoking gun in his hand. “Check your
priorities, son” he said. Anders got back up and looked through
the smoke to see a large armored silhouette. “Colonel!” he said.
“Enemy heavy armor coming right at us!”
“Keep firing at the infantry, that’s our biggest threat right
now.”
“This is Caiman 3-9, pulling back! I repeat 3-9 pulling back
from heavy armor, over!”
“This is Castle 2-1, pulling out!” The armored silhouette was
getting larger.
“Sir, our armor is pulling back, we can’t stay here!” said a
terrified Private.
The Colonel looked behind him a yelled “Shit! Keep you heads
down boys!” All at once the infantry line went below the
trenches, confused on why the order was given, when a HAS-76D
Samson Main Battle Tank rolled over the trench, blasting the
enemy armor. Cheers went up and down the line as more tanks and
armored vehicles rolled over the top of the trenches.
The Colonel paused for a moment, then spoke through the
headset. “The 4th Armored is starting a counterattack. We have
been ordered to regroup at the ship, the programming is almost
done” said the Colonel. Castle Infantry Carriers rolled up as
the sailors and marines jumped in the rear, and they sped away
to the row of corvettes, ready to fight.
