(ICE)[/center]
The committee was called to order and the representatives of the
remaining nations took their seats. The Councilman from Japan
after taking a sip of water started the meeting, “Ladies and
Gentlemen, I would like to start this meeting by asking you pay
close attention to the information provided so that your
respective nations can prepare for what we expect over the next
decade. On that note I give the floor to Dr. Johannes Faust of
the Cousteau Oceanographic University.”
Dr. Faust looking more like an athletic model then a scientist
approached the speakers platform and smiled. “I will keep this
simple and in laymen’s terms whenever possible. After two years
of extensive studies on the world’s oceans we have found many
interesting details. First the large amounts of freshwater
entering the oceans have decreased the salinity levels. This has
had multiple effects. In no particular order, massive species
die offs have occurred as the new salinity is too low for some
species and to high for other species. Plankton and algae levels
have been effected as well removing a large section of the
bottom of the food chain. This affects the available food supply
negatively. Furthermore the extremes have altered the food chain
replacing and moving species up or down on the chain.”
“The changes in salinity have affected the currents and
subsequently the winds. Warm currents heading north have
decreased by 80% meanwhile the common wind patterns have been
altered meaning sailing ships can no longer rely on old sailing
charts. New current and wind charts are being released today
along with hazards to navigation charts based off of radar scans
from GEOS 7 in orbit.”
“Moving on, the loss of many of Earth’s natural biomes due to
inundation, the subsequent die off of oceanic vegetation, the
decay of plant life releasing massive quantities of carbon and
other greenhouse gasses has resulted in a drastic increase in
greenhouse gasses. The increased albedo caused by the more
extensive cloud layers has resulted in more solar heat being
turned away from the earth and a subsequent lowering in
temperatures. Current climatological studies show that this well
quickly reach a tipping point with the altered currents plunging
the planet into an Ice Age. Please, Please, hold your comments.”
“Next due to the decrease in salinity ocean going ships have
lost a percentage of their buoyancy, depending on the ship
design this can be as bad as 10-30% loss of buoyancy, this will
have an adverse effect on shipping and on floating steadings.
Appropriate near term cautions will need to be taken to prevent
the loss of these items.”
“I now turn the floor over to Dr Ian Rotchskeyn from the Russian
Federation a renown climatologist.” Dr. Rotchskeyn an elderly
man approached the speaking platform and took a sip of water,
“Without going into extensive detail we can expect a quick
change in the atmosphere secondary to temperature changes. This
will result in violent weather patterns and free floating Ice
flows. As the temperature change speeds up we will see large
quantities of water being pulled off into the reformation of the
new ice caps. With the axial tilt change we can expect the new
caps or thickest layers of ice to be located in the South
Pacific between New Zealand and South America and the Northern
Pole to be located in the Russian Federation. As the albedo
increases due to the ice the temperature decrease will increase
and we can expect ice as far south as the tropics within six to
eight years. We have little time to prepare for these events and
with our diminished resources we can expect global unrest. I now
turn the podium over to Dr George Matthews a renown American
geologist”.
Dr. Matthews in a ruffled jacket approached the speaking
platform and without pause jumped right in. “The large
quantities of water on top of the continents have caused massive
pressure over preexisting weak spots, fault lines and volcanoes.
The rift valley of Africa has accelerated its separation from
Africa and has now become a geological hotspot as lava has made
it to the surface in many areas as it moves away from Africa. In
the United States studies show that the midcontinent weak spot
around New Madrid has reached peak load and an underwater
earthquake is imminent. Furthermore many volcanoes and
earthquakes are occurring along the Pacific Rim. Of more
importance is deep sea exploration of the Canary Islands show
that a massive undersea eruption and landslide are imminent that
will result in a mega-tsunami that has the potential to circle
the globe multiple times. Many of these conditions will worsen
as the ice sheets form and proceed across the continental
shelves. It is safe to say for those whom survive this chain of
cataclysmic events the Earth will never be the same.”
As Dr Matthews stepped down the room exploded in questions and
chaos. It quickly degraded into petty arguments and the meeting
was cancelled four days earlier and the representatives went
home with their own interpretations of what they heard.
