I'm so into 4231 now, that's the end of formation
experimentation for me. I thought that Gotze's lack of pace, and
indeed James non83+ness to start with, might be debilitating but
with the emphasis on passing and control this year, it isn't at
all. The formation is even better than in previous FIFAs imo,
field coverage is total with combinations available between the
lines in every area. Pass and move in this shape is imperious.
Doesn't suit direct play that well, so it's not the best for
mixing your approach, especially if you like crossing (tho I
have had CDMs on the end of them after much build up), but it
doesn't rule out quick counter attacks. Saying that, for a
genuine constant counter threat, you'll probably want more pace
than I have :D
Player instructions have made a decent difference. As follows...
ST- Press back line and get in behind. This seems to be pretty
huge, as it makes for plenty of runs through the back line,
really stretches defences and gives quite a few through ball
options when short of space.
CCAM- Stay central. Ummed about getting them to stay fwd but so
far WRs have mostly done that job anyway. His job is advanced
playmaker, secondary goalscorer. I basically want them hovering
in the hole all the time.
L/RCAM- Stay fwd, helps with counters. Not sure if free form is
making a lot of difference but possibly they pick up infield
positions a bit more regularly, which is great for long shooters
or playing off the CCAM and ST like inside forwards rather than
wingers.
CDM- One stay back and man mark, the other get forward. This is
kind of crucial in a way, I used to do it with WRs but
instructions are more influential and can combine well with
default WRs. Depends on the players you have there and how they
blend. Split like this they really pull midfields apart and you
can sometimes end up with a 4132 shape but with the wide men a
bit further up. The one that gets forward will often get huge
space as well, either in the 1st or 2nd wave, so plenty of
shooting opportunities, inside and outside the box.
Man marking means that any player breaking into the hole was
generally quickly under pressure, which is so often a weak
point, splitting the CBs. Previously, it was Nainggolan hanging
back, which he did brilliantly. His H/H meant he would still get
forward for shots and assists as well, was a good balance. Now
he'll be getting forward ofc.
With my other pair, I had Raul Garcia getting fwd, he's on a M/H
WR but with these instructions it was like MegaH/H, really good.
Plus he's excellent in both directions...
I do like stay back on a H/H player, interested to see how it
goes on Lahm, I might miss the odd foray up the pitch, we'll
see.
Defence I'm still doing with WRs, I'm always wary of sending
full backs up and may even end up instructing Maicon not too.
Evra is excellent at covering tho so didn't get caught out much
when Lichtsteiner would push on. Plus you have the deep CDM
covering a lot too. And I have Barzagli in here, Godin in the
other, both are pretty much auto defense...
That is, all this only applies when the gameplay isn't a bag of
sh*te.

Good read Cuz.
I do find it interesting the different play styles - pretty much
starts off with the decision around strikers - 1 or 2. From
their a formation is derived. Also, how this has morphed into
the FUT world. I think a number of people play 41212 simply
because it was deemed the formation with the most 'standard
coverage' in the field.
Other than that, the majority we see is a 1-striker formation -
mostly with wingers. Then, I'd say the 4231 - wide midfield
option, not CAM's. The CAM 4231 would probably be my 2nd choice
formation, should we revert back to single striker & not
investing heavily in wingers.
But, with the personnel at present, the Tevez/MVB combination
has been fantastic. That, together with the fact that we are not
suffering the gaping hole issue in 4222, I can see this one
being the favourite - at this stage.

Over here, 7 out of 10 teams seem to be BPL 433. So constant.
Eejits. I boss so many midfield battles.
4222 is probably not so dissimilar really. Although that CF is
so involved as a playmaker it probably comes across quite
different. Although... Tevez H/H may even it out...
Formation makes such a big difference to how I go about things.
If I go with a 433 variant I'm very counter attacking and
looking to cut in from wide all the time. 451 made me play quite
heavily down one side or the other. 4312 is all through the
middle. The 442s I've not bothered with for ages as I always
find them too flat. Didn't get on with 352 at all this year and
the other 3s are always very risky.
4231 just seems to cover everything for me.

I am using 4231 again at the moment. But A and B teams, both
BPL - (I'm still being nooby remember)
Sturridge, Coutinho and Matic, all very good though. As are the
two IF CBs.

So this is my curse. Mocked it up before last nights straw/camel
back session and obviously can't let it just slip out of my
mind.
Now it's a ratings bump but I wouldn't call it strengthening,
Verratti is a mere twig compared to Nainggolan and I'm deeply
dubious about a H/H CB. It's not even close to my usual CDM pair
template, both are tiny and neither can shoot. BUT, I have
fancied trying Verratti ever since I clocked he was a classy
gold now, not a classy silver like the last time I used him.
Plus, it's Thiago Silva innit. And the clincher, a 4 league
hybrid of 4 of Europes most winningest national champions... And
Perin, because Buffon turned out to be unnecessary and possibly
slightly over budget, tho it won't be perfect without him.
Since any and every team will inevitably spend a lot of time
playing like sh*t for me, it may as well look cool. 7 games, win
or lose, and I'll have something I can admire on the web app.

Just look at the short passing of that midfield and attack- 84
up front, 84 and 85 wide, 90, 90 and 88 central. Not to mention
the equally brilliant ball control/dribbling. Nom, nom, nom.

Cuz, last year, playing with albeit the strongest teams that
we've ever used, we did end up with Matthaus & Lahm (TOTY) as
central CM's (after an in-game position swap). Now, it must be
said that they both have insane defensive stats, but I was still
concerned about the lack of height between them.
Overall, they were insane in the midfield. Sure, they didn't win
many headers, by realistically there are only so many of them in
the game. It was all about interceptions (91 & 99 respectively).
They simply dominated the midfield. Oh, of course pace helped
(86 & 84), but defensively it was fantastic.
So, I don't think I'd be concerned about the height - I would
hope though, that their defensive stats (which look great
between the two!) means you can dominate the midfield too.

Yeah, headers are not a major concern. It's nice having a guy in
there that can, nodding back goal kicks and the like, Raul
Garcia is excellent in the air in the B team midfield and it
does help the attack. Defensively it's not such a bother,
current Lahm partner Nainggolan is no beanstalk so they dont
have much aeriel presence as it is. It's more Verratti's 50
something strength that concerns me :D
Seems to me that you notice strength in game when it's really
low or really high. I really do notice the high strength of my B
team mid....
I'm gonna get him anyway and sub him on for some of the
preparatory batch of games. When I can motivate myself to play
them, lol.
