To give a bit of inside on it :D ;)
After football its our national sport, I would be very surprised
if we didn't achieve a sweep next week on the 10k, competition
isn't what it used to be on those long distances

I had no idea that speed skating was a dutch tradition of sorts.
Quite interesting that. Is there any reason why the dominance
isnt so great on the shorter distances? i mean i guess the
dutch obviously pride themselves on being good at the long
distance ones but as with athletics, a lot more of the public
focus goes on the sprint events. Is there a reason as to why
the dutch dont dominate that? (well assuming they dont, and the
tone of article would seem to indicate that) is it simply a
matter of choice?

Ok, ok.
Woke up this morning & catching up whilst attempting a document
for a client. The recap is currently on the 5KM skating. Could
switch over to something else but I don't want something more
exciting that will take away from the document writing :P.
So ... onto a comment that I'd heard ages ago - the debate of
"is it deemed a sport if it involves subjective analysis"? So,
freestyle skiing - some person thinks your knees weren't
together and marks you down, blah blah.
It's cool to include these, but are they really a sport?
Tangible aspects - time, goals - all easily quantifiable. This
is not a "skill" debate - heck these guys can do amazing things!
Thoughts?

Those are difficult questions to answer in a couple of sentences

Tough question Kiwi, im not sure ive ever given too much thought
to what constitutes a sport. Guess im a bit of a traditionalist
in that sense so if its been a sport since i was a young sprog
then thats fair enough. But when it comes to new sports
emerging, Im not sure, as long as they dont strike me as some
pile of BS thats just been invented to keep a bunch of bums in a
job haha. Yeah very insightful i know. Maybe we could look at
it from the other angle, for example sports have meet certain
criteria to be considered a sport, so obviously involving
athleticism would be a given, but then what about spectators,
would people be prepared to watch it? it should be entertaining
right, but then obviously the likes of ballet would fit that
criteria but certainly isnt a sport so need to think on what
grounds that would be excluded on. Hmm, like i said its a tough
one....

Yeah - I understand what you're saying Eric re: the spectator
aspect. I think one of the things that bug me, this from a
layman's perspective specifically around the freestyle
snowboarding jumping thingy ... I watched the last guy and
thought he had an impressive run. Even on the replays the
commentator appeared to by hyping his run a bit - mentioning he
may displace his team mate (he was currently in 3rd). Ended up
with a score that placed him in 5th ::).
Is there some anticipation/hype around waiting - absolutely.
It's fun seeing the guys in medal places squirming a bit. I
suppose it would be great to see more data around this - I'm
guessing they grade things on a negative basis. So - didn't keep
legs together -0.25 marks, arms were flapping FIFA-style -5.75
:P. Anyway, maybe more detailed info on how judges scored the
run may make sense for us armchair sportsmen.

Yeah im with you on the scoring Kiwi, it would be useful if
there was a bit more guidance given on scoring prior to each
event, maybe there is, maybe ive just not seen it.
That Ladies Mogul event yesterday ive no idea how they were
scoring it. The time of the run was one thing, but they were
obviously being scored on the 2 jumps they did as well. When
the scores were coming up at end of the round, they were being
shown as a percentage, which left me totally bemused.
To a lesser extent had the same issue with the biathlon?? I
must have missed the bit where they told you the time penalty
for missing a target, but the commentators were suggesting that
if you missed one target, your chance of winning would have
almost gone. So im guessing it was a 5 sec penalty for missing
a target, but that would be a bit harsh, 3 second perhaps????
suppose i could google it lol

Not sure if 3k counts as long or short distance but just seen
the Netherlands Van der Weijden (*spelling) romp home in one of
the races, looks like another gold could be on cards there.
