Well, in 13 I used contain and team mate press to great effect,
especially against pace and lob.
(though not against O30 bronzes!!)
Got it down to a fine art... rarely leaving players out of
position, which is a common flaw in team mate press.
Until I discovered it I was all over the shop with defending :D
Has this changed?

Yes. Second man press is still there, but contain isn't what
contain was (or even there at all ... not really sure, didn't
like to rely on it).

slow CBs will be quite effective as they just cannot storm
forward like a 77-81 paced player. Those 1.9m tall behemoths
with pace are being caught out getting way too quickly to the
attacker. Controlled dribbling (LT) will easily get past that.

interesting and may be very true....power to the non pacey CB's!

Interesting stuff chaps.
Skill moves easier, good. Enjoyed the odd random waggle on 12
but got nothing out of it on 13 at all, even when I attempted to
be more considerate with them. Don't mind no knock on, only
really used it to round the keeper.
Less effective contain, think I might cope with that but online
defending always takes a bit of adjustment with a new game
anyway. Never used 2nd man press.
Player switching. Hmmmm. I've always been high balls only, if
the AI interferes it leaves me in pieces. Switching needs to be
good for me to defend the way I know best, covering. Points
concerning slower CBs should help me there, I can funnel attacks
into them but if I get caught out on the switch then the cover
fails completely.
The removal of the skill shoulder button... How does that impact
the steadying 1st touch? I got into the habit of using it more
often than not with my bronzes. Forgot what I was told about
it's effect on the shot fake too....

Not the early release but thought I'd write up some points after
5 games (3-1-1), with the caveat that I've been playing cold and
it's just first impressions:
-Firstly the game seems fun but there are a lot of issues old
and new..
-Crosses and corners are ridiculous
-Like the demo there is still a delay on players making runs,
and a lot of offsides
-Unlike the demo the game is quite fast; not UT13 fast but pace
seems more of an issue than it was
-Carlos was mentioning defensive errors the other day, and boy
was he right. On occasions defenders seem to drift away from the
ball and/or stop dead as they did sometimes in 13
-The controls and new dribbling are going to take a lot of
getting used to, and I can't seem to tell much difference
between players with high and average dribbling/ball control
stats
-Lag seems to once again be a key factor in determining the type
of game you end up playing, and ultimately who wins
-Need to try this out with a cheap discard team, but once again
it feels like there isn't that much to choose between cheap and
expensive players
-The games so far have seen a lot of high pressure and second
press, and a lot of counter-attacking, which hopefully isn't
going to be a trend throughout the year.. though I suspect it
will with the way the game seems to play
Like I say, not complaining, enjoying it so far, but EA could do
with ironing out a lot of creases.

That's a shame if true. I have just a very cheap team right
now, and they are poor in possession and in distribution.
Saw this as (hopefully) a good thing, because I was assuming
that I would see marked improvement as I invested coins in
better players.
If this isn't the case, then I am a little disappointed.

Hmmm ... I would disagree ...
Overall, it is an improved game. But, it's not one where - "if
you were good in FIFA13, you will automatically be good in
FIFA14". There are changes in the game and people need to work
harder at getting better. Sorry, know that sounds a little
harsh, but it's a reality.
Example ... when I lose the ball in midfield I think to myself
that I should use LT more - protect the ball/slow down
dribbling/etc. As it has been said already by a few people,
skill games do help to adjust to the new mechanics of the game.
Are all changes for the better - absolutely not! There are still
"flaws" when comparing to RL football. Said it a long time ago
that if we wanted RL football in a game we would all be
massively disappointed because RL football is not that great,
every minute of the game.
In terms of better players ... Rooney felt great / Hernanes is
superb / Hulk is very strong and shooting is spot-on / Willian
is smooth on the ball / Diamanti (83 CAM) smashes them. There's
lots to be positive about.

I second this i have found the game more challenging that last,
but when i concede if i look back at the goal i know most of the
time it is my fault i.e i have contained too much dragging
players out leaving space.
I do like to pass a lot but what i have noticed is switching
play from wing to wing is a huge option this year as most of the
time all the opponents players are coming to the ball leaving
the other side of the pitch wide open.

Yeah BB - interesting one changing wings that. I do like to
switch things up like that and I check the radar often to see if
it's an option.
On another note ... played a few Seasons matches with the kid.
Saturday evening - 2 1/2 games (3rd was a rage quit at HT) and
it was really good. Play is not as slow as last year (as
compared to UT) and it's been good fun. Last night had a few
games & matched up against a few good players - tougher and a
few of the "stupid" things happen there too so not a great
"second session".

Never use radar.
Can't.
Just can't.
Have it switched off.
Take my eyes of the action for a nano second, and boosh! I lose
it :D
