Got here in the end!.... (busy night)
So.. was listening to Cake's version of I Will Survive in the
car yesterday... right up there as probably my favourite cover
version ever.
I do like a (good) cover.
But then that got me thinking... is it better than some of my
other favourite covers..
Pick a top 5?... or add your own...
Cake - I Will Survive
Johhny Cash - Hurt
I'm Not In Love - Fun Lovin' Criminals
Running Up That Hill - Placebo
Jolene - The White Stripes
Finally - Cherry Ghost
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
I Fought The Law - The Clash (see Forum Summary)
Just love great covers... Only rule: the cover has to be better
than the original.
(hate bad ones)

Excellent shout fella.
But.... is it better than the original, which was a brilliant
track....?

Hmmm ... Acoustically ... yes. S & G - wrote a great track. M &
S performed it better - better harmonies (big fan of them at the
mo').
Also ... the interesting part here to differentiate, or strip
out the new technology that is available to current bands. That
would impact on the comparison ...

Had a mate who has been his whole music thing for many years. 15
years ago recording something on his keyboard (music not PC)
through to a device. This device then converts to MIDI & copies
to PC. Great - then he needed guitar sounds ... another whole
process. Basically, creating a backing tape of sorts was an
effort.
He was in the US for 7-odd years and visited us for a few weeks.
He's Apple-nuts so ... new iPad 4 ... maybe $100 worth of apps
(if that) ... and he can do the same thing - better quality - in
... maybe an hour. Fantastic functionality that you have access
to - on an iPad.

Kinda takes something away from the modern stuff they churn
out...

Absolutely!
I love the fact that Mumford & Sons sound great - live. I hate
this studio-only stuff - too easy to abuse & "sound great".
Watched a doco - Big Easy Express - them & 2 other bands/groups
... taking a train trip from San Francisco to New Orleans. "The
Cave" - goosebumps stuff ... so cool @ 3:40-odd ...
