We have had more than a few players who have never been to
Northern Ireland until they first met up with the squad. There
are plenty of big countries who have players in their teams
whose only connectionsl is they have played there for a few
years. The republic like every side in the world are using the
eligibility rules to their advantage.
I am unhappy when players play for our underage sides and then
leave saying they never wanted to play for Northern Ireland. If
you don't want to play for Northern Ireland then don't.

I don't think Conor Washington had ever been to NI before.
(There are definitely others although I couldn't say with any
level of certainty who.) At least he truly qualified for us. How
ridiculous is it that he could also have lined out for another
country he had possibly never been to just because a grandparent
was born in a neighbouring country?
I understand that the eligibility rules allow this but they are
disgraceful and it is appalling that CAS upheld them. My initial
point included the likes of Declan Rice and Jack Grealish as
(Republic of) Irish. Irish passport holders or descendants of
Northern Irish people with no actual links to the Republic
should have no chance of taking the field for them.
As you more or less say though, the Republic could claim they
are doing no different to us fielding Conor Washington (despite
this being ballix). I disagree that the Republic are, like every
other international team, using the rules to their advantage. I
don't think any other team in the world can select players who
have no link to them apart from a passport or just wanting to
play for them.
As for saying they never wanted to play for us, yes, absolutely,
that is ridiculous. Who knows what the concerned community
leaders are "advising" them to do though? Not quite as bad as
making up lies about feeling threatened in a sectarian way
though, as I recall has happened before.

It would be great if they could actually put 11 (Republic of)
Irish players on a pitch at any one time...

How often do we play a team of 11 players born in Northern
Ireland?

I think a few years ago on the old forum someone posted that in
a recent match at one point in the match all eleven players on
the pitch were NI born.

Now you mention it, that might be right Ernie. Pretty class if
so and I'd imagine a very rare occurrence for any international
team these days.
This is a bit of a tenuous link to the above post (but there is
a link to NI), but I recall the season before last when Leeds
beat Man City 1-2 away that all the Leeds team (that either
started or ended the match - I can't remember which) had played
in the Championship winning team the previous season. Bielsa was
asked about it and played it down saying it was unintentional
(although I wasn't sure I believed him).
*anybody know the NI link?

Stuart Dallas?

Yes, both goals by Dallas. Unfortunately the rest of my post was
untrue as I've checked the team sheets and don't think that at
any point in that match the team was made entirely from the
Championship winning side. It definitely happened in another
match though - my mind had told me it was the master showing the
apprentice (Pep) who the boss was.

Sean will have some competition with Brighton's Evan Ferguson
looking like the real deal....
That said, he switched in the right way... every squad needs
every member to buy in to the team, and he's not used the NI
system like others (I accept we are in a strange situation with
irish passports etc...).
if losing eligible players can be balanced with gaining Maik
Taylor, Dan Ballard etc we will be fine...
