Linfield 1 - 0 Qatar (2022 World Cup hosts)
By: gpjim Date: June 22, 2022, 12:17 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Mentioned in the Europe thread, but deserving of it's own thread
given it restores some pride in Northern Ireland football after
the embarrassment of the recent Nations League matches and our
national team's failure to record a win since the competition
began.
Of course, Linfield also achieved something our national team
couldn't despite Qatar being ranked over 50 places below NI in
2015. Linfield's win over Qatar comes at a time when they are
ranked above NI and were on a 9 game unbeaten run. Linfield's
first game in 2 months too.
It's not just been mentioned in the local press either, but by
the wider UK press and beyond.

Linfield should have beaten World Cup hosts Qatar by a heavier
scoreline, maintains Matthew Clarke
Defender Matthew Clarke insists Linfield's astonishing win over
World Cup hosts Qatar in Spain last week was no fluke. David
Healy's boys were on a week-long training camp in the sunny
Costa del Sol resort of Marbella to prepare for their Champions
League showdown with The New Saints.
The game against Qatar took place only 24 hours before the
Danske Bank Premiership Champions were due to return home on
Wednesday.
New signing Chris McKee, who has joined the Blues on a permanent
basis from Rangers, bagged the only goal of the game to earn
Healy's team a memorable victory.
Although it will be dubbed as a freak result, Clarke believes it
could have been even more. 'It was the only game we played on
the week-long stay and I suppose it will be classed as a shock,'
says the former Rangers defender, who recently agreed a new
two-year deal at Windsor Park. The Qatar players got a bit of
stick on Twitter after the game. It was unbelievable to beat a
national team. 'It wasn't as if they were not at full strength
because we checked out the team. Eight of them were in the side
that drew with Slovenia a few weeks back. 'To be honest, it was
an even enough game, we played very, very well. We were
disappointed to be only 1-0 up at half-time. 'Chris (McKee) had
a great chance to make it two and we had a few more good
opportunities after that. We kind of died off after 65-70
minutes, which was only natural because of our fitness levels
considering it was our first game back. 'They hemmed us in, but
we had a good shape and they didn't cause us any bother. 'It was
a great workout for the boys because we were playing against a
quality side. 'Taking into account that the Blues have lost a
total of nine players — Christy Manzinga, Ahmed Salam, Jake
Hastie, Kieron Evans, Martin Donnelly, Eetu Vertainen, Michel
Parker, Jake Corbett and Adam Carroll — since their title win in
April, it made the result even more astonishing.
New signings McKee, Joel Cooper and Daniel Finlayson were
included in the travelling group. 'Daniel fitted in well, he
looks a decent player,' Clarke adds. 'The week away helped him
settle in, there is no doubting that. 'You know what you are
going to get from Coops. We have been crying out for a bit of
pace up front and a bit of directness, so it was good to have
him back again. He played in front of me on the left, so he was
a good outlet. 'We lost a number of players over the summer, a
lot of lads were with us on loan. Although we were missing a
couple, we still had a strong squad out there in Spain. I'm sure
the gaffer will be looking to strengthen the squad even further
before the start of the season. 'Clarke reckons the training
camp was the ideal preparation for the upcoming joust with TNS.
'The facilities were unbelievable at the Marbella Football
Centre,' he says. 'English Premiership teams use the facility.
Liverpool have been there, Wolves are over this week. Turkish
side Besiktas and Spanish team Deportivo Alves are also due over
as well. 'The West Ham player Manuel Lanzini was training on his
own, as was Leeds United player Jack Harrison. The facilities
are brilliant — the pitches, ice baths, swimming pools. 'We went
there before the Covid pandemic back in 2020 and it served us
well on that occasion because we went on that great European
run, only to be beaten by Qarabag, which deprived us of a place
in the group stages of the Europa League. 'It was great for the
new players, it was a good bonding session for them. It was a
different type of training in the warm weather, hopefully it
helped speed up our fitness levels. 'It was certainly a
beneficial week for us and it got us acclimatised for the
European games coming up. 'The fans' favourite also admits TNS
will be formidable opponents in next month's Champions League
first qualifying round showdown.
The Blues will travel to face their opponents — who tackle
Cliftonville and Larne in friendlies this coming week — at Park
Hall on July 5 with the second leg scheduled in Belfast a week
later. 'The gaffer will be working overtime in getting
information on them,' says Clarke. 'It's a good draw
logistically and it also gives us the chance to progress. 'In
saying that, TNS will be thinking the same thing, they'll reckon
it's a good tie for them. We'll treat it like any European game,
we'll give them the respect they deserve. 'They are Champions of
their country, so they must be respected. You get nothing easy
in Europe, so we'll be up for a battle. 'I know TNS defeated
Glentoran last season but, by all accounts, it was a chance
missed by the Glens. Playing in Europe is the best possible
preparation for the new domestic season. 'Midfielder Cameron
Palmer made a return to first-team action in the Blues'
week-long training camp in Spain and played part of the victory
over World Cup hosts Qatar.
Clarke went on: 'It's great to have him back fit again after his
surgery. Cammy will be a great addition to the group. 'There is
now strong competition for places in the centre of midfield.
Cammy is an honest, hard-working lad. After missing so much of
last season, he'll be like a new signing for us. 'He is still a
young lad and still has a big future in front of him. 'With the
domestic season due to commence on August 13, Clarke is happy
with a home start against Portadown.
He adds: 'It's good to be at home for the first game. Paul
Doolin kept them in the Premiership last season and he will have
a lot of new players on board for the start of the new campaign.
'We struggled to break them down last year away from home. We
will not underestimate them, that's for sure, but we'll be out
to get our season off to the best possible start. 'If last
season is anything to go by, we'll be in for another hectic one
— every team is out to beat the Champions.'

I see Qatar are now in the top 50 in the FIFA rankings, 9 ahead
of Northern Ireland.
Qatar were ranked 99th when Northern Ireland held them to a 1-1
draw last time they played.

Shrewsbury have cancelled a pre-season friendly against a side
from Qatar.
Town's LGBTQ+ fans' group Proud Salopians called for the game on
6 July against Qatar SC to be scrapped.
The League One club will instead host an open training session
on the same day at their pre-season training camp in Valencia.

Scared of getting beaten, and not even playing the national
team. Lol
Virtue signalling that Northern Ireland didn’t get roped into.
Wonder how many won’t be watching the World Cup on TV?

I see Portsmouth played Qatar SC on Saturday and beat them 2-0.
Note the “SC”, so not the team currently sitting 49th in the
FIFA world rankings, but a team from their 1st division.

I wonder how’d they’d have done against the Qatari national
team?
