I thought the GAWA were very good, too - easily outsung the
Norwegian support, who were probably there in equal numbers. The
Armagh boy on the big drum stood in for Wee Craig very well!
Thing is, it seemed to me to be a very different crowd from the
usual travelling contingent - the hallion factor was severely
down! Seriously, though, it was great to see so many families
and children there, incl lots of wee boys and girls, who I'm
sure enjoyed the whole occasion immensely, regardless of the
result.
Incidentally, I spotted the follwing comment on a Brentford
forum from someone calling himself 'Bournemouth Bee':
"I worked at the game tonight and it was nice not having to deal
with the usual Neanderthals that drag their knuckles into St
Mary's Stadium.
Great support from the Northern Irish fans but they were
outclassed by Norway who played some nice stuff. Wouldn't pay to
see women's footy but I've sat through worse than tonight
following the Bees in the 80s!!"

NI are based at the home of AFC Stoneham of the Wessex League,
which is around Tier 9 or 10 in the English football pyramid. I
had thought this was pretty "low rent", until I googled it:

Seems this £9m football complex is owned and maintained by the
Hampshire FA - a few County Associations in England have similar
training facilities:

Meanwhile, Stoneham Lane is just 3 or 4 miles north of
Southampton - seems the IFA have done ok on this score?

The refreshing thing for me about women's football is the far
lesser amount of flopping, diving, general time wasting that
goes on in the men's game, which bores the life out of me when
watching top level men's football on TV.
Maybe it's only a matter of time before the dark arts start to
get utilised more in the women's game (it may already exist at
WSL level, I don't know), but it's good to watch a game on TV
for now and see far less of it.

What was security like regarding the size of backpacks? The
email I received said no larger than A4 and there would be no
facility to store anything larger.

Ernie, I didn't have a bag with me and they just waved me
though. I am fairly sure there were bags much larger than A4
going in (but don't take my word on that)...

I was at the Norway game and really enjoyed it despite the
defeat. It was an historic achievement just to qualify for the
tournament, the support was fantastic, and it was great to get a
goal. Realistically scoring a goal and maybe getting a point
were probably the main targets - hopefully we can get a point
now off Austria who aren't as good as Norway.
That said, I think Kenny and the players will be disappointed
that we conceded 3 pretty cheap goals in the first half. And I
think tactically Kenny got one or two things wrong:
- It is crazy that we are persisting with passing the ball out
from the back as if we are the Man City men's team. Teams have
cottoned onto that strategy and are now pushing up to pressurise
our defensive players. McCarron was badly at fault for the 2nd
goal, through this strategy, and I think it badly affected her
confidence for the rest of the game.
- Our right flank was ridiculously exposed. Magee was getting
drawn in-field and then Wade and subsequently (and especially)
Wilson weren't able to defend at Norway got runners in behind
them. It was SO obvious to all of us in the stands. Fair play to
Norway for exploiting that weakness but Shiels will need to sort
that out for the Austria game.
McFadden was our best player by a country mile but we could
really do with her in midfield to protect the defence.
Personally, I'd be tempted to go to 4 at the back, especially if
McKenna and Hutton are fit enough to play. A back four of
McKenna, Nelson, Hutton, and Vance would be ok, then have
McFadden shielding them, with Callaghan and Furness also in
midfield. Magill's going to be missed up front but I'd like to
see Kirsty McGuinness start. She's not the best defensively but
she offers a lot going forward. I thought she and Callaghan
really added something when they came on

She's a history maker and a real stalwart of the team but afraid
to say Julie Nelson is a bombscare at the back, misplaced passes
and just looks uncomfortable with the ball at her feet.

Callaghan losing he player when defending the free-kick and
Magee misjudging the flight of the ball cost us today. I thought
McCarron was off the boil today, not tracking runners and lots
of misplaced passes.
I just hope we can keep the score down against England and don't
take a battering.
