Such a poor start. What was Magee doing so far out of position?
Burns probably should have done better at the near post, but it
was a cracking finish to be fair.
For the second goal, McCarron didn't have any support and as
soon as she got closed down we were in trouble.
Caldwell can have no excuses conceding that penalty, and I
thought Burns almost got a hand to it.
We looked much brighter in the 2nd half. I think bringing on
Callaghan for Caldwell was the right move (if Nadene has damaged
her ribs she'll be out for the rest of the tournament?) and we
thoroughly deserved our goal. I was watching the game with my
two (8 & 6) and I scared the life out of them with the roar when
the goal went in. Absolutely delighted for the Julie and the
girls!
Question marks over Burns for the positioning for the free-kick
we conceded the 4th from. But after that, the game kind of
petered out. Holloway and Kirsty McGuinness looked bright when
they came on. The challenge on Magill looked totally innocuous,
so I was surprised that she hobbled off in floods of tears.
Fingers crossed that it is just a wee knock and not something
worse.
I'd agree with the above that Magee did well. She is a bit slow,
gets caught out of position and can give the ball away at times,
but she made two or three excellent last ditch tackles to keep
the score down, and she was involved in the goal, so I can't be
too critical.
Kenny needs them to take that 2nd half performance into the
whole 90 minutes against Austria.

Just seeing some post match comments about Magill, and it looks
like she has sustained a bad knee injury (ligaments?) so that
will be her out for a while. Things just got even tougher for
us!

Thought Lauren Wade was our best player, every time she received
the ball she got the head up with a good pass and made a lot of
good runs , it was just her final ball into the box that was
poor.

Sorry, I can't agree about Magee playing well at all. Yes she
made two good blocks, but she is constantly out of position and
isn't quick enough to recover. She did the same in the Belgium
friendly. Pearce and Redmond on commentary were praising her but
only Kelly Smith in the studio seemed wise to it.
As for the 'play it out from the back' style, quite frankly that
should have been ditched for these finals given the quality of
opposition. It's all well and good against teams of a similar
standard, but we looked at our best last night when we were more
direct (and, most importantly, put distance between the ball and
our own goal). Burns' kicking means we can't do it directly from
the goal kick but passing inside to the midfielders (Caldwell
especially, we missed Callaghan from the start) is asking for
trouble.
Get Rebecca McKenna at right back (Demi Vance on the other side
is solid) and get it forward quickly. Delighted for Julie Nelson
getting the goal and the players battled really well in the
second half, but we're the architects of our own downfall
largely.

Agree about the women being coached to play it out from the
keeper, I know it's Kenny's philosophy but only teams who are
good enough can do that and we are miles off that standard, and
soon as Burns rolls it out it was panic stations as Norway got
wise to it and pressed.

As long as they can create a few special moments like the goal
last night that's all that matters in this tournament in order
to inspire all those children who are watching. Interesting to
read Shiels comment that they can make top 20 in ten years.
Thats inspiring for the little kids coming through.

On one of the post match clips I saw from Kenny (not the cringey
one about the referee) he was explaining why he wants the team
to play it out from the back and take risks - it is a learning
process. We'll learn nothing if we just play safe football.

She started really badly, giving the ball away and then being
WAY out of position for the first goal (Tony Capaldi
flashbacks). Yes, she is slow, can't pass and is positionally
weak, but she did make a few good contributions and deserves
praise.
Redmond is just very positive all the time on commentary. She
doesn't seem to want to make any criticism at all, not even
constructive criticism.

I was sat in row 5, level with the half way line, so had a good
view of Magee in the first half when she was playing on that
side and I have to disagree. The problem was that the Norwegians
were doubling up on her side, leaving her exposed time and
again, as they attacked us down that flank (Demi Vance had an
easier time of it on the other side, I thought).
But in the second half, Shiels must have instructed Furness to
move out to the right of midfield (from the centre), meaning
that Magee was less exposed, such that she was more comfortable,
indeed made some good attacking runs as the game went on.
I have to say that part of the problem may be that she is short
and stocky, making her look slow etc. but that never did eg John
McGinn, Neil Lennon or Sammy Lee any harm, did it?
Besides, she likes a good crunching tackle, which is always an
A+ in my book!

100%.
It needs to change, but the problem is that Shiels has clearly
opted for this tactic, and for him to change now would question
his whole approach (while asking players to switch to new
tactics mid-tournament, with no time to practice it).
All that said, there was no shame in losing to a very good
Norwegian team - not just good players, but very well drilled,
too. And I don't know how she came across on TV, but their No.7
(tall, lean, long black hair), was absolutley masterful in
midfield - ran the game for them for whole periods, I thought.
