If I was Kenny Shiels I'd be starting to find ways to get the
game called off, maybe a convenient covid outbreak in the squad.

if England beat Norway 8-0 i think we can hold them to 9 or 10
(at Half Time lol)
be great to score a goal against them though
only saw part of the 2nd half we cannot pass from the back,
forget that, Vance and others guilty of giving the ball away
cheaply

This has bugged me for a while with all the N.I ladies games
I've seen against better opposition.
Shields philosophy of playing out from the back is very pleasing
on the eye against North Macedonia and the like, but all the
times I've seen the women's team doing this against the classy
teams, we have given the ball away and been punished multiple
times in the same game, but still persisted with it (including
the Norway game and the last 3 times we've played England),
getting hammered in every single game.
We don't have the quality of player to do this against stronger
opposition and get away with it (you can tell that Furness and
Simone Magill play in the WPL, there is a real gulf in
technician ability between them and the rest of the team - maybe
he should play Furness as a deep lying playmaker a-la Pirlo if
he wants to play from the back against England?)
Tactical inflexibility by Shields, but because 'he's playing the
right way' it seems to not get the same level of criticism.
I'm no tactical guru, but would it not be more sensible when
playing better opposition to park the bus, try to keep the score
to 0.0 until half-time and then review the situation and try to
be a bit more progressive in the 2nd half? Against Norway we
consistently gave the ball away like this trying to play out
from the back and were out of the game after 20 mins (combined
with the right back being persistently caught out of position at
CB/DMC, as opposed to being doubled up at RB as has been
suggested).
Hopefully England will take the foot of the pedal with them
having an eye on the next round and only beat us 4-5; I would be
happy enough if we could muster a few shots on target and even
miraculously score

If we keep keep it below 6 or 7 v England it will be seen as a
positive no doubt, if we scored a goal v England it would be a
footballing miracle however if the young players who are the
future of the NI ladies learn and absorb the experience of being
in the Euros and playing the likes of England then that's
priceless as this sort of footballing education doesn't really
happen very often.

Women’s Euro 2022: Northern Ireland eliminated as Austria get
qualification hopes back on track

Austria put themselves back in contention in group A with a
comfortable victory over Northern Ireland, a goal in each half —
from Katharina Schiechtl and then from Katharina Naschenweng
five minutes from the end — meaning that Irene Fuhrmann’s side
ran out deserved winners. For Northern Ireland, their journey in
their first major tournament is over after England beat Norway
8-0 in the other group A game.
Northern manager Kenny Shiels made four changes to the side that
lost 4-1 to Norway in their opening game. Star striker Simone
Magill was out with a knee injury and Shiels adopted a
false-nine approach, with captain Marissa Callaghan playing in
an advanced position on her return to the side.
Austria made three changes from the team which lost to England
last week, one of them enforced as Laura Wienroither was
isolating in her hotel room with Covid.
The Northern Ireland press, which hadn’t really worked in their
opening game, was replaced by a low block which was
understandable in the Southampton heat, but meant that Austria
dominated from the outset. They deservedly took the lead in the
19th minute when Demi Vance fouled Julia Hickelsberger-Füller
just outside the box and Sarah Puntigam’s deflected free kick
was flicked in by Schiechtl.
It was a poorly defended set piece and a sloppy enough goal, but
then came a piece of real quality when Austria goalkeeper
Manuela Zinsberger produced a brilliant long-range pass into the
path of Hickelsberger-Füller. Northern Ireland looked odds on to
concede a second until a brilliant interception by Sarah
McFadden.
Northern Ireland did look dangerous when they got the ball to
their speedy wingers, Lauren Wade and Kirsty McGuinness, but
were lacking the final, killer ball and a couple of long shots
from Wade and McGuinness were the best they had to show for
their efforts in the first half. The big action was at the other
end, with Jackie Burns going from zero to hero in the space of
ten seconds when she gave the ball away trying to play out from
the back before producing a sensational save when Barbara Dunst
attempted to chip her, tipping the ball on to the crossbar.
Northern Ireland looked far brighter after the break, harrying
their opponents all over the field and stringing together some
good movements of their own, but again without really
threatening Zinsberger in the Austria goal.
Having mysteriously substituted their captain, Viki
Schnaderbeck, Austria lost their way a bit, though Northern
Ireland nearly conceded a second just after the hour mark when
Dunst again tested Burns with a long-range effort, which the
goalkeeper appeared to misjudge, but still managed to get enough
of her fingertips on the ball to direct it over the bar.
In the 67th minute, substitute Laura Feiersinger then made sweet
contact with the ball but her shot was bravely blocked by
Rebecca Holloway. Try as they might — Rachel Furness had a
header which landed just over the bar — Northern Ireland
couldn’t find a way back into the game. Their odyssey looked
well and truly over when Naschenweng swept the ball home after
Abbie Magee misjudged a long-range pass.
