Glentoran football club takes Twitter to court over anonymous
posts.
'Officials at the Northern Irish club are seeking the identity
of an account holder posting allegedly defamatory material.'
Glentoran, the Northern Irish football club, AND its manager
Mick McDermott have filed HIGH COURT proceedings against Twitter
in a bid to UNMASK an ANONYMOUS account posting allegedly
DEFAMATORY material.
The case, which was filed at the end of last month, is being
taken by Glentoran Recreation Company Ltd AND McDermott against
Twitter International Company.
It is seeking a Norwich Pharmacal order, which would COMPEL
Twitter to DISCLOSE any information it has on the USER of an
account.
BOTH the plaintiffs are being represented by Paul Tweed, the
well-known Belfast-based solicitor who has acted for
high-profile clients INCLUDING Britney Spears, Harrison Ford AND
Jennifer Lopez.
The posts relating to McDermott and Glentoran have continued for
a number of MONTHS and attempts to get Twitter to remove the
content have been unsuccessful.
While they have been primarily AIMED at McDermott, club
officials have ALSO been targeted.
IF a Norwich Pharmacal order is successful and Twitter DIVULGES
the IDENTITY of the user, then defamation proceedings against
that individual, or individuals, can commence.
Tweed previously discussed this type of order on an episode of
Law on Trial, the Business Post’s legal affairs podcast, where
he said that obtaining them can cost up to €30,000 in LEGAL
FEES.
EVEN IF the court makes the order and gives us the details of
the anonymous users, in most circumstances OUR CLIENT is still
responsible for BOTH SETS of legal costs, REGARDLESS of the
outcome,” Tweed said on the podcast, which was recorded last
year.
Glentoran and McDermott did NOT respond to queries from the
Business Post on the case.
Twitter DECLINED to comment when contacted.

TBH I'm taking it absolutely fine that out of the last 13 posts
on a thread called 'Glentoran', you have posted 10 of them - I
presume that's what you're writing about and find amusing? Why
would I take that badly - strange comment.
How are you taking Linfields 3rd defeat in the league this
season and its only mid-October?
You don't seem to be commenting as much on the Glens since your
regular source has been shut down due to impending legal action,
just made trolling that little bit more difficult for you I
suppose.
Anyway cheer up, I'm sure the season can't get any worse for you
- now that is something to be taking badly LOL
A humiliating defeat at home to your closest rivals has gotta
hurt ............. suck it up LOL

on a thread about a club you don't support?
I just find your obsession about posting on all matters
involving Glentoran and their players bizarre.
In fact some might say this irrational obsession with another
