Now has over 60 caps, but I hadn't realised she's actually from
the North East (Durham, not Antrim):
"Chester-le-Street director of coaching Bill Godward alerted the
Football Association to Furness' potential at an early stage.
However, she was overlooked by England because she was not
attached to a club with a centre of excellence or academy.
Furness then accepted a call-up from Northern Ireland, and
represented them in an U17 tournament in Spring 2004. Although
born and raised in Tyne and Wear, Furness was eligible for
Northern Ireland as her mother was born in Belfast."

       Their loss, our gain.

Northern Ireland boss Tanya Oxtoby believes the return of record
goalscorer Rachel Furness will add "enthusiasm and belief" to
       her young squad.
Newcastle United midfielder Furness is a late addition to the
panel for the Nations League game against Romania at Windsor
Park on Tuesday, with Nottingham Forest's Megan Bell ruled out
       through illness.
Oxtoby is delighted to have the 36-year-old back in the fold for
the first time since October 2023.

       Meanwhile:
Oxtoby admitted her side are now concentrating on finishing
strongly with their promotion hopes fading, starting with a win
       against Romania.
"We're focusing on a points tally rather than a position in the
group now and if we hit that we'll end up where we need to.
Let's hope Furness still has enough left in the tank, but either
way, I wonder whether her inclusion is just a symptom of Oxtoby
       searching around for something new?
