Alex Crawford listed as a subsitute in an 1893 match?
       By: Simon-613 Date: September 22, 2020, 5:43 pm

Another historical query from me as I look back at the early
       internationals that Ireland played.
In the match against England on 25/02/1893, this website
  HTML https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-7DayJCeJXcb05yQ0RwMm9rajQ/edit<br
/> , shows Alex Crawford as having made an appearance as a
substitute, replacing Robert Stewart. However, I thought subs in
international football didn't start for many years thereafter?
Wonder if anyone can confirm if Crawford was our 1st sub or
whether the listing is an error?
       I did cross reference against
  HTML http://nifootball.blogspot.com/2006/09/alex-crawford.html
       which
has Crawford listed as having played in that match but which
makes no reference to him having come on as a sub ...

Can't find any mention of a sub. Accoriding to the above (which
my stats agree with) Thanny McKeown didn't start this match and
       Crawford did.

I think the person/people behind that pdf seemed to be
highlighting that as a query, but used the same format as they
use for subs, there were no subs allowed in 1893, my records
have Crawford as playing in the game and McKeown not involved.

The Rules as they stood simply would not have permitted Crawford
to come on as a Substitute during the game.
My guess is that he was a Replacement i.e. the selectors
originally called up eleven players as normal, but Stewart had
to drop out before the game for some reason, meaning Crawford
was called up in his place.

Thanks everyone for helping clear that one up.
I knew that substitutes generally weren't allowed until much
much later but wondered if it could have been a rare exception
similar to the substitution that Wales made in a match in 1889.
Quite an interesting story of how Sam Gillam became the 1st ever
       sub in an international game

I have double checked with newspaper reports at the time and as
       stated Crawford started the game.
