Q and A with country artist, actress Jana Kramer
  HTML http://www.thetowerlight.com/files/2013/03/CountryConcert001-HazlettMurphy.jpg
Before country artist and actress Jana Kramer performed at the
Campus Activities Board’s annual Country Concert Friday, March
8, The Towerlight sat down with Kramer to discuss her musical
endeavors, influences and plans for the future.
The Towerlight: Recently, your songs “Whiskey” and “Why Ya
Wanna” have topped the country charts and you won “Top New
Female Artist” at the Academy of Country Music Awards. What has
this last year been like for you?
Jana Kramer: Well, it’s been amazing, with the ACM nomination
and then best new female, and then being able to get ready for
two big tours—with Darius Rucker and then Blake Shelton—so it’s
been great. Then of course getting engaged, that’s been the
       cherry on top.
TL: What’s it been like balancing an acting and a singing
       career?
JK: I’m just focusing on acting at the moment. I did my last
project in March, it was called “Heart of the Country.” Honestly
I tried to juggle both and I was exhausted. And I knew that I
just wanted to focus on the music, and I barely have one day
off. So it’s hard to try and juggle but in a couple years from
       now maybe I’ll try to.
TL: Did working on One Tree Hill present you with any musical
       opportunities?
JK: That’s how I got the courage to do my music. I knew that the
show offered a lot of opportunity for new artists and so I was
writing a bunch and going to Nashville so I gave some songs to
the creator of One Tree Hill and was like “Look, I wantto do
music after the show is over, take a listen.” And that’s when
they turned my character into a singer. It was awesome. I was
like “Yay, I don’t suck, this is awesome.”
TL: Did you always know you wanted to do country music?
JK: I grew up singing country music. Since I was a little kid I
was singing country music. People are always like, “You’re from
Michigan, how are you singing country music?” but that’s all I
listen to. I have a country accent because that’s how I am. I
would sing an Adele song with a country accent.
TL: Where do you get your inspiration?
JK: I grew up listening to Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash and June
Carter, so those are my loves. I like the old time country.
TL: Is there a lot of support in your hometown for your music?
JK: For sure, all my friends and family support me and they all
       listen to country music too.
TL: What’s it like to have fans lined up waiting to see you in
       concert?
JK: It’s weird but it definitely helps me keep going. Whenever I
doubt myself or am like “what am I doing?” Whenever I am having
a hard time believing in what I am doing, I go on Twitter or
show up to shows like this where people are really excited and
I’m like “Yay, people actually do want to come out an see me.”
TL: Do you prefer smaller venues, like at Towson?
JK: I love smaller venues because the fans are closer up to the
stage and there’s a different energy. It’s funny, Brantley
[Gilbert, her fiancé] has come on a few gigs with me and he’s
like “I miss doing the bar scenes” and I’m like “I know.”
Because you can just have so much more fun rather than like
being in a stadium or an arena where everyone is so far away.
TL: Are there any shows that are really memorable to you?
       JK: There’s been a bunch, I can’t even, there’s so many that
I’ve walked away from saying, “That was such a great show.” I
just had one the other night in my hometown in Detroit so that
       was fun.
TL: Do you have any pre-show rituals you do with your band?
JK: Well we do a little prayer and a chant. We do a serious
prayer and then we end it on a funny note.
TL: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with?
JK: Well I would love to go on Garth Brooks tour, Garth Brooks
has a tour coming up. I would love to go out with him, I love
him. But I would love to collaborate with Adam Levine. I think
it would be a really cool little mixture.
TL: At the end of the day, who do you want to be known as?
JK: I want to be known as a successful, family country artist. I
want to have a family and I want to be a country artist.
