There was a new family in my previous parish, and the father
confided in the Orthodox Priest that his young son had picked up
some pretty bad language from his classmates in kindergarten.
The Priest smiled, and told the father that he had heard the
father utter some choice words. This man was totally unaware of
the utterances that came from his mouth. Then the Priest made
the observation that young children tend to repeat like a tape
recorder the words they hear from their parents, so if a parent
cusses, the child will cuss ten times more. He said that many
parents learn to clean up their language, and that children are
a blessing in that respect!
[/quote]Parents are part of the equation, but they are not the
only influence on children. When parents are not around, boys
gather with their friends and who knows what can happen?

I agree, but it is at home and in the church that we build the
foundations. That being said, God is the perfect Father, yet we
all went astray.

The Amish are pretty much separated from the world, although
there have been some unwelcome intrusions into their
communities.

Because they are different and isolate themselves from the rest
of the world, I think that people get paranoid. They have
certainly been painted with the image that their communities are
rampant with abuse and oppression. The problem however, is that
we only ever hear of the negative aspects. One only has to look
at the news reports of our own society to wonder why we're being
so critical of them. The have rules that their people must
abide by, just like we do. What makes their rules wrong and
ours right? It is just because we disagree with them. Many
anti-christian scientists believe that raising a child in a
religious environment is akin to brainwashing and psychological
abuse, does that give them the right to insist that my children
be taken away from me? Of course not. The problem is that
society seeks conformity by all people, yet our Christian faith
teaches us to "be not conformed to this world."
