Maria, I'm not saying they're not sins. It's just that I've only
ever heard Catholics call them deadly sins.

In the Orthodox Church, we call the seven Cardinal Sins, the
seven Deadly Sins.
We do not have strict definitions that distinguish between a
mortal sin and a venial sin as do Catholics.
This is because we believe that all sin by definition, is a
serious offense against God.
Whereas Catholics are taught that an unconfessed Mortal Sin can
cause them to be damned, but an unconfessed Venial Sin will only
be punished in purgatory, Orthodox do not believe in the concept
of purgatory. Therefore, Orthodox Christians are taught that all
those people with unconfessed and/or unrepentant sins (the
majority of us) will go to hades after they die, not purgatory.
Only the mercy of God and the prayers of the faithful and the
saints will save us. Thus, we must live our lives in repentance
and be sober and watchful.

I've just looked up several Orthodox articles on their
teachings, and a book a friend has lent me, and none of them
uses the word "cardinal" or "deadly" when talking about certain
sins.

The red paperback Orthodox Prayer Book published by the
Antiochians has that term.
I cannot find my old copy.

From Colossians 3:8, we learn to avoid sins of the tongue:
But now ye also put off all these:....., filthy
communication out of your mouth.

Does that mean that the foul words we hear today in
R-rated movies are sinful to use, and if unrepented would send
you to hell ?

Using foul language, especially blasphemous words, could very
well send us to hades because we will have soiled our baptismal
gown. Also use of such words opens us up to demonic attack. We
must be always sober and watchful, so that we can resist these
demons.

Yes, it is difficult to be in the world and yet not part of it.
Being around classmates, teachers, and fellow workmates who cuss
and blaspheme makes it difficult.
It is so easy to become a potty mouth.
There was a new family in my previous parish, and the father
confided in the Orthodox Priest that his young son had picked up
some pretty bad language from his classmates in kindergarten.
The Priest smiled, and told the father that he had heard the
father utter some choice words. This man was totally unaware of
the utterances that came from his mouth. Then the Priest made
the observation that young children tend to repeat like a tape
recorder the words they hear from their parents, so if a parent
cusses, the child will cuss ten times more. He said that many
parents learn to clean up their language, and that children are
a blessing in that respect!

The eyes are the window to the soul. Whatever one fills their
eyes with, so shall their soul be filled.
Obviously, we can't help seeing and hearing some things, but we
can choose what we pursue to fill our eyes and ears with. Few
acts in this world are truly in and of themselves sinful and
damning. It is in the intent of our hearts where the sin
originates - so an outwork act for one person might be sinful
whereas it may not be sinful for another depending on what their
intent was.
Even volunteering at a charity can be a sin if one does it for
praise and honour from other people. We must avoid judging
others and cast out the log in our own eye before commenting on
the spec in our neighbour's eye.

This is where we must discern.
By their good or bad fruits we will know them.
For example, when I was a youngster, I visited the White Fathers
in New York where they had a small museum of African artifacts
including household deities. I went to one of those import
stores where they had various objects carved from teak wood. One
object caught my eye. It was a shoe horn and I needed one, but
that shoehorn also had a carving of a man's head that resembled
those household deities. I thought nothing of it. It was a piece
of art to me.
About five years later, a very devout Catholic friend wanted to
share my apartment until she could get a job and afford her own,
so I agreed that she could come and live with me. One day she
saw my shoehorn and became frightened. She insisted that we burn
it. We compromised as I needed a shoe horn, so we tried to burn
off its head by lighting a match outside. Since it was hardwood,
it did not readily catch on fire. Since we had no fireplace, we
took it into our kitchen and placed the head in the flames of
our gas stove. Soon the head caught on fire, but a surprise
awaited us. From the deity's mouth, ears, and nose came huge
fingers of fire that were about five to six inches long. This
beast seemed alive and about to strike us with vengeance. I held
it at a distance because there was nothing that I could place it
in without getting burned. Time seemed to stand still as we
stood watching this thing continuing to flame and taunt us.
After 30 minutes or so, the head was finally reduced to nothing,
and the flame died out leaving me with a usable shoe horn, which
I kept for only one year later before finding a plastic one.
This scenario had a strong impression on both of us. We learned
to be more careful with merchandise that we are tempted to
purchase from stores, especially jewelry and knick-nacks. In our
attempt to be frugal, we would ask ourselves,
1. Do I really need this object?
2. Does it call unnecessary attention to myself?
3. Does it help in my walk with Christ?
4. Could it be an unneeded distraction to prayer?
5. Would it offend my Christian or non-Christian friends in any
way?
