I think that statement is too generalized. Maybe a little too
       extreme also.
Most protestants typically believe that she was not perpetual
virgin and that she was not assumed into Heaven. I've never met
a protestant who says they hate the Theotokos.
I think originally such claims were in order to discredit the
Catholic Church during the Reformation and the Age of Religious
Wars in order to draw believers away. It also flies in the face
of Protestant Theology that teaches that works can have no part
in one's salvation, and that salvation comes only by the
irresistible Grace of God for those whom He selected from before
       their births.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, the Catholics in retaliation to
this reformation and status downgrade of the Holy Virgin, went
too far to over-emphasize the Saintliness of Our Lady in the
teachings of Thomas Aquinas, thus giving the Protestants
       additional ammunition.
As Orthodox, we do not believe that the Theotokos was herself
immaculately conceived. She had a natural conception and birth
       from natural parents.

Some Protestants do venerate the Blessed Virgin, for instance I
       know that the Anglicans do.
The main reason why her role is downplayed in Protestantic
denominations is because they originate from the Reformation and
their predecessors rejected The Holy Tradition completely.
Martin Luther broke with Rome in the 16th century and he
established his new faith on the basis of "Sola Scriptura" (The
Bible alone) and Marys role in the Bible is important, but its
not written to much about Mary.
The Veneration has always been a part of the sacred
Tradition, but when Luther desided to disregard the Tradition he
logically saw all veneration of The Blessed Virgin as well as
any of the saints as some sort of deflection of the focus that
he meant should reserved for Christ alone.
The reason why the Anglicans has kept up their veneration of The
Blessed Virgin is because they left the Catholic Church in 1534
at roughly the same time "give or take" that Luther broke with
Rome, but it wasnt related to Luther reformation.
The English king Henrik 8 desided to break the bounds with Rome,
but kept all of the sacraments (even though nor the CC or the
       Orthodox consider them valid today).
Henrik 8 didnt disregard the Tradition entirely as Luther did,
but kept the veneration among some other similarities with RCC.
Hope I where able to answer some of your questions:)

I was just in the middle of adding more comments when you
       posted.
Unfortunately, even the Anglican and Episcopalian churches have
deviated significantly from their traditional roots. Veneration
has generally fallen by the wayside, and attempts to revert to
traditional ways has caused considerable division.

Henry VIII may have wanted to break from Rome's authority, not
the Catholic faith, although that is debatable. Still, once his
court was full of Protestants who did follow Luther, the
Reformation couldn't be stopped. The abolition of monasticism
was a big hint, even if we consider it a result of greed rather
       than fanaticism.
Even today, the CofE is very diverse from one congregation to
the next. There are those who appear more Catholic than the
Pope, and there are those who'd do Cromwell's Puritans proud,
       and everything in between.

Yes, I absolutely agree. I read an article a couple years ago
regarding Pope Benedict's invite to traditional Anglicans to
join the Catholic church. This was in the light that many
traditional Anglicans feel as though they have been abandoned by
their church to pursue a much more Evangelical (in the modern
sense of the Protestant movement) style of worship.
