Whenever the church has been too closely knit with government
there has always been corruption. I'm skeptical to say the
least.

IMHO, Putin has done a lot to restore the Russian Orthodox
Church. He could have done much less. Of course, President Putin
is not a saint, but under his leadership, the Russian Orthodox
Church has grown stronger.
