As he gazed into her eyes it just made Mika feel safer., she had
been in no rush herself to break the stare She knew there was
something in her mind that knew him, but her recent trauma's and
rapid recollection of her life before the orphanage had made the
past difficult to remember at times. She noticed the hesitation
in saying something to her, but it wasn't her way to push people
to tell her what was on their mind. However when he called her
"Little angel" that had stuck a cord. Normally names people
called her induced fear and terror, although the person most
likely to call her something other than Mika at this point was
her father. Little angel however seemed soothing. The words
hit her ears and she was instantly calmer, and even more drawn
       to Hunter.
The way he was intent on protecting her was something special.
She didn't fight it at all. If he wanted to make sure she was
safe she would let him. She felt safe with him. She continued
to follow him to the safe room as her mind searched for answers.

Footsteps pattered in a hallway behind them, but out of view.
The fact that they're loud enough to be heard didn't bode well.
A thing Hunter seems to realize. He recognizes whatever it is.
He isn't alarmed enough for it to be the big baddie. But he's
       still not precisely happy.
He moves to a door located off the hallway, opening it and
pulling Mika inside. It's a closet. Dark and silent. Those
footsteps were coming closer. But the door was shut tight. In an
odd movement, she's pulled between his body and the wall, his
form creating a shelter for her more petite one. He does not
touch her inappropriately, and actually keeps the contact
extremely chaste, despite the very intimacy of how they stood.
The reason for this is clear when the door opens. Whatever it
was looked inside, audibly sniffing. Mika had a minute to wonder
how it couldn't see them. Somewhere in the back of her mind, the
way that he is shielding her now is so familiar, moreso than any
other thing he's done. His leaf green eyes gazed down at her.
Something in his scent is familiar. He smells of the forest,
crisp and woodsy. Cedar, sandelwood and a touch of spice beneath
       it.

Mika keeps her eyes locked on his as whatever is there sniffs
the room. As his actions become more and more familiar to her
she starts to remember. The scent was the biggest trigger
though. It smelled like the air that would waft through the
windows of the orphanage. It had been in the middle of the
Adirondack mountains. The rolling mountains with their lush
trees and woods. She had never been able to fully explore the
forests around the orphanage, but the scent was unmistakable.
She wanted to ask Hunter, more than anything, but whatever it
was sniffing was still there and she didn't dare make a sound.
She just stayed there, shielded by Hunter feeling that he
wouldn't let anything happen to her if he could help it.

The thing sniffed and sniffed, but didn't seem to find what it
looked for. It gave a grunt and padded away, the door closing
behind it. Hunter remained as he was for a full minute before he
moved. A small light glowed from his palm, allowing
       illumination.
"Looks like we might be camping here for a little bit. I didn't
realize that it was already time for the dogs to be on rounds."
He shook his head. "Perception of time is so odd here." He now
stood about four inches away from her, green eyes once more on
       her.
He visibly tried not to let his eyes move over her, as if he
wanted to memorize who she'd become. It didn't work very well to
try and stop it. He'd seen the questions on her face, and would
give her time to ask them.

Mika nodded softly, "It's okay, if staying here keeps us from
anything particualy unpleasant I don't mind." Mika took a deep
breath as she realized she was staring into his eyes again.
       "Hunter?" she started quietly, "I know you don't I? I know I
do." she was convinced. "You smell like the orphanage, and
everything about you seems, so familiar, so safe." her heart
was pounding a bit. "It's like my head has been in a fog for
weeks, ever since I started remembering before the orphanage."
Her eyes found the floor as she looked down ashamed of herself.
Ashamed her deteriorated mental state as of late was making even
the memories she was sure of hazy. "I'm sorry that I have to
ask you to make sure my feelings are right, and my mind isn't
just playing tricks on me again."

He gazed at her, one of his hands lifting to place a gentle
index finger under her chin. "Never lower your eyes that way,
little angel. Not for me. You never have to." He said, once her
eyes were back on his. He folded his arms across his chest,
       preparing to answer her questions.
"Yes. You do know me. I'm sorry that so much has happened that
it's crowded out other memories, but I imagine yours of the
orphanage were not pleasant. So, if they remain cloudy and
you're happier, it's not so bad." He shrugged his shoulders. He
opened his hands, as if offering something to her.
"I was there with you. I tried to protect you, when I could. You
likely don't remember, or never realized that I stood as a
guardian for you as often as I could, but I didn't want to
intrude on you. So I didn't speak much or often." His eyes were
serious, and focused on her face. It's a little intense, that
look. It's flattering, as well, to have someone so intent upon
       your expression and words.

Mika's eyes widened slightly. His touch was so light, and he
kept calling her little angel. It was still so soothing. She
could see him now. He had never spoken to her much, but he was
one of the few, if not the only one she could remember who never
had said cruel things to her. He had never beaten her up like
the others, and he hadn't recoiled at the sight of her. She
shook her head lightly and stared deeply into his eyes again, as
if that was the source of all her memories. "You were nice to
me." she said quietly, "You didn't run away when the freak came
into the room like the others did." She placed her hand lightly
over her mouth, "You were the one that came in to bring me food
on the bad days I had when they wouldn't let me out of the room,
thinking I'd hurt the normal children." A few tears had formed
in the corners of her eyes. "I can't believe I forgot." She
sighed lightly, "I guess that's what happens when your father
comes back into your life telling you you're a monster, and
tries to destroy anything you have left of what you've come to
know as yourself." She said this sadly, not fully understanding
how it was so easy to share with him. A confused look crossed
her face slightly, "How did you end up here?" she asked.

His lips twisted into a bitter snarl. "Those little monsters
tormented an innocent girl because she was different. I think
they're the last ones whose judgement is secure." He spat.
"Their cruelty is something I will never be able to forget."
His tone softened, and his face smoothed out, coming back to a
sweeter visage while he looked at her. "Of course I protected
you. And I would have never dreamed of fearing you. You were far
too sweet, too gentle. Even despite what they did to you.
You were like this little angel, wings a little dirty from
whatever hell you'd dragged yourself out of, trying to stand
against thrown stones and kicking feet. I couldn't let them try
and destroy that light or let them remove the wings that would
take you above them. You deserved better." He realized exactly
how poetic and sappy he'd gotten and shook his head.
"My poetics pale, however. You were worth it, little one.
I...hope you never doubt that. As for how I got here? I got
sick. I died here." He said simply.

Mika listened to Hunter, soaking in every word he breathed. A
few tears ran down her cheeks as he talked about her. She had
never known someone at the orphanage had ever looked at her in
such a light. Back then she had thought she was a dark shadow,
nothing worth looking at. She never had thought anyone would
have seen light in her darkness. She smiled softly at Hunter,
"They way you described me, it was beautiful." she breathed. "I
still have a hard time looking at myself and seeing light,
rather than darkness. I'm truly glad someone sees me like
       that."
As his explanation for how he had gotten there hit her, she
found his eyes again. She knew her own were showing sorrow.
She had known when she met him here again, that he wasn't alive,
but that didn't make it any less cruel. Hunter didn't deserve
to be dead, he was too kind, too caring. She whispered softly,
       "It's not fair."

He lifted a hand to tuck a lock of her hair away from her face,
smiling slightly. "The brightest lights shine for others, little
angel. You don't see your light, but someone should be reminding
you that it's there, always. You shine so beautifully in the
dark." His hand dropped back to his side, his fingers rubbing
over one another as if the feel of her hair still lingered, and
he wanted to keep it. "You are, and will ever be beautiful to
       someone who truly sees you."
He arched a brow, and asked her rhetorically, "What's fair,
sweet angel? This world is continually proving that such things
as fair, at least in the way our minds view it, doesn't exist.
Don't bemoan it. Only realize it and face it.
My day and existence was made brighter that you found your way
here. Somewhere, the scales are trying to balance. I watched you
leave for a new life, and had my own taken. But the wheel spun
you back to me. It's miraculous, in it's way."
