The Fury shared a look with the boatman. It was a pitying look.
Silly mageling. "Little one, many have asked that question
before you, and alas, many will ask it again. He may very well
know, but it would take more than you have to give to make the
ferryman share his information." The woman boarded the vessel,
standing at it's head as if she's been there before.
She looked at the boy. "You're very attractive, but certainly
not worldly. My advice? Watch who you ask for anything here.
Nothing is free." She shoved that flaming red mass of hair back
behind her. "In fact, much of anything down here is exceedingly,
life alteringly expensive. They play for keeps."

The unnameable leaned against the side of the boat, looking out
at the milky waters. She feels his eyes, but isn't put off by
it. "Because you fascinate me. So, you'll remain in my service
until my curiosity is satisfied. You need someone willing to aid
you and escort you. That would be me, because I see no other
willing to claim you. And you willnot enjoy what happens if you
are not claimed when we reach the gates." A small, taloned hand
lifted gesturing ahead of them, through the mists.
"Knowing that, are you really going to deny me my curiosities
and fascinations, little one?" Her grey eyes settled on him, her
head tilted in that birdlike fashion. "Are you going to deny
companionship?"

The ferryman glided across the surface of the water, the chains
that bound him to the ship pulling it along behind him. He
regretted that the worst part about his job was listening to
people talk. The pointless questions... 'Why am I here?'...
'What's going to happen to me now?'... After spending countless
ages guiding souls across the river, he'd grown tired of them
and had taken to ignoring his cargo in all but the most
necessary situations.
He made a mental note to ask the Fury to possibly assist in the
ferrying duties more often. At least this boy had no need to
address him with all of his curiosities, even if he had to
overhear it.
