Calculating the Payload

Hi All,
I would appreciate your comments/insight on how you would
calculate the payload for a given flight/acft on the day of
operation.
We all know that ZFW-DOW = Payload. The trick is, how do you
derive the ZFW.
Daily FOO/Flt Dispatchers are preparing Fuel Flt Plns.
Do you use a FltPlng system like SITA, AvPlan?
If so, do you let the system determine what the max ZFW is for a
given acft/sector on the day of OPS?
What are your inputs to the system that allows the system to
compute the Fuel flt Pln.
TOW
ZFW
LND Wt
Max Fuel required (ie tankering without affecting payload.)
Combination of the above
What in your opinion/training determines the Payload on any
given flight for a given day.
is it
WAT limit RWY ie RTOW
MTOW reached
MAX Tanks reached
MAX Structural ZFW reached.
A combination of the above.
Does the system you use allow for a Take Off Weight Adjustment.
How do you use it?
Please provide reasons for how you would calculate the ZFW for
the day.

Check your RTOW on the day and time of departure, then check
your required fuel on the standard reg, trip+alternate+30min
hold and don't forget your cont>>>> RTOW - minimum fuel required
= actual zfw, hope it helps, and remember you can then also
check that you don't bust landing weight!!!

I like the idea of personal discussion, but I feel it will be
most interesting to all participants if we keep our conversation

I agree, this will be great to refresh as I don't work with this
everyday and need to start updating myself.
Also another question, How long are you required to have a
degraded EROPS approval before you can continue to an further
distance approval?

Simply put, Aircrats total weight is made up of:
1. DOW (also called OEW-Operating Empty Weight or even BOW-
Basic Operating Weight)----- obtainable from the
Flight/Operation Manual
PLUS
2. Fuel on board ---- calculated using Operation
Manual data
PLUS
3. Pay Load. ----- Obtained from the commercial staff
As the term implies ZFW (zero fuel weight) = #1 + #3 ( i.e.
DOW+Pay Load)
As to the rest of the questions, a dispatcher works in
coordination with the commercial staff.
Dispatcher computes Max TOW and Max LW using departure and
destination Field Lengths and Take Off Climb and Landing Climb
limits dictated by ambient Met conditions and obstacle data.
En-route obstacles, oxygen requirements and turbulence
conditions may dictate adjustments to the Brake Release Weight
of the airplane.
Till a few years back this was done manually which was very time
consuming.
Computerized Flight Planning has taken away all the drudgery.
Route details, Air Traffic Rules, Op manual data, Nav &
Communication facility info, Met information on daily basis, up
to date Pay load info by link to the commercial department
computers- etc. and detailed steps for making a Flight Plan
are fed into the computer which requires just a couple of
strokes on key board to print out a Flight Plan.
To extract a flight plan one starts with ZFW. Computer works
out Fuel needed. Then it adds this fuel to the ZFW and
recalculates fuel.
A couple more iterations like this produce the accurate amount
of fuel needed.
If the permissible Take off weight is more than the
DOW+FUEL+PayLoad Offered, the computer can be programmed to
suggest Tankering in case the cost of fuel at Departure is less
than that at Destination.
