Tyres and experience with 235/85R16 or similar?
By: DataMan Date: March 2, 2019, 3:18 pm

       Another post re tyres...
I have trawled through this forum and other forums and there is
plenty of advice re metric replacements for 7.50R16. I have
Bridgestone Mud duellers 671 7.50R16. They are not great at
holding on when the tarmac is slippery. I am considering
235/85R16 as I am keen on something like 235 width but I want
lower profile (don't care about the lower gearing) and more of a
road/tarmac friendly tread. Any suggestions re tyre setup apart
       from being a pussy?
       Cheers Tony

I've never had them but IIRC 235/85s are a common boot
adjustment to the Series Land-rover corners, all pain free etc.
The rolling radius is barely different but the rubbers a bit
broader. Not sure what you mean about lower profile though?
235/85s = wall height is 85% of the 235mm width, ie quite tall.
       Personally I run 265/75s, a common boingy size I've heard. Don't
try them though, they'll rub and bang. I had some custom wheels
made, many moons ago and mine are ok(-ish)

I'm running 265-70-16 General Grabber AT3's on the rear and and
AT2's on the front - due to clipping a rock and holing the side
wall of an AT2 and being unable to get a direct replacement. All
on a 1980 series 3 88'' with a 200 TDI. They are on rims marked
27-12 which I believe came off a Defender
I live at 3000' feet in the Pyrenees, so there's plenty of snow
and mud, a lot of the local sheep farmers use AT 2/3 on all
       sorts of 4x4's.
Last year I had to use a mates 90 to get 10 k up to the resort
on fresh snow and had to put chains on what ever crappy tyres
he's running to get up to the ski resort, the wife's Sportage
went up on AT2's in 2wd with 5 people in it.
They are noisy on tarmac, not unbearably so, there's no sound
proofing in the truck cab, and grip pretty well in the wet. ok
on mud and grass too, not that I do anything too extreme.
When I put them on the 88'' I checked the rolling diameter
against a 750 and it's about 7% smaller. with the Disco diffs it
makes the truck a little more suitably geared for the gradients
       around here, 8% / 12% over 10 / 15 kilometers is normal, the
truck storms up it all in third with no problems.
I have a mate in the tyre trade and I paid £105 each for the
AT3's, and £20 each for delivery from the UK to the Pyrenees. It
was cheaper to send them as 2 packages, way cheaper. I don't do
a lot of mileage so I'll keep them on all year round..
       Cheers
       Stef

I’ve recently changed my tyres from original tubed 600 x 16 to
defender steels with Gen Grabber 235 x 85 x 16 and there great
       on or off road.

I’ve been running 235/85 R16 tyres for quite a while; since
about 2002 ish. Goodyear Wranglers to start with, on 130 rims,
but I had some issues with tubes chafing and random punctures.
I’ve had General Grabber TR on tubeless Wolf rims since about
2010, and the only puncture I’ve had was a nail.

On my SIII 2.25 D I have gone from 235/85 MT to 205 AT and it is
a lot better regarding noice, fuel and not having to change down
       uphill.
       Looks better, I think.
Having two sets of wheels should be the best thing, I'm not much
for anything "all-round" but prefer the the best in each corner,
hence two sets is the deal.

       Remember that a 235 is/should be 235mm wide. A 7.5x16 tyre
is/should be 195mm wide. Thats quite a bit, and what it means is
that your wheel stops most likely will need to be adjusted for
the 4cm wider tyre, giving you a larger turning circle (which is
large in the first place, especially for the 109 ;-)).
Michelin makes a great tyre in 7.5x16 - Latitude Cross I think
it's called. Was standard fit from factory on the boingys for a
number of years. Good if you mostly tarmac. However, not M+S or
snowflake (winter tyre approved) as the new GG AT3 or BFG KO2 -
but these do not come in the original 7.5x16 :(
       Cheers!

My current series is running 235/85/16 tyres as it came fitted
with a set of Colways fitted on standard rims with tubes, since
then I've stuck with the same size but progressed through
defender rims to wolf rims, as for turning circle I've not had
       much trouble with the 109.

I have run 235/85 R16 Goodyear duratracs on my 109 for a while
and love them. Great on highway and zero issues in the snow.
