       Battery for 2.25 Petrol
By: CountyDorset Date: December 28, 2017, 2:26 am

       Merry Christmas chaps and chapettes.
The battery on my S3 petrol has died and gone to heaven.
Any suggestions on the size that I will need to replace it with?
The old battery was an old school affair that needed topping up
       with water.

The heaviest one that you can squeeze in the tray!
Sounds simplistic but bigger is better. Check out the CCA, Cold
Cranking Amps is what you're looking for, the ability to
discharge it's self rapidly, spin the starter as fast as
possible and not suffer undue damage in the process.
The other type is deep cycle, they have the ability to almost
completely discharge and recover repeatedly, they are used for
campers, caravans and boats (amongst other things) as the
       domestic supply.
Batteries, like most things, are either made down to a price or
up to a standard, hence you get what you pay for. The simple
test is the weight, put a cheap battery against a dear one and
you'll feel the difference when you pick them up. Lead is the
stuff that does the work, the less a manufacturer can use, the
       cheaper the product.
I did read somewhere that unscrupulous persons buy batteries
with a long guarantee and then discharge them completely and let
them stand for a week before returning them with a month left on
the 'No quibble' basis, probably the same types that swap VIN
plates on Landies just to avoid paying road tax........
All the best for the New Year
       Stef

The Optima red tops are a fantastic batteries, not cheap but you
get what you pay for in a battery.

The advice I got was to get the biggest battery that would fit
that had the +ve terminal on the right hand side.
That way, the terminals and cables are out of the way of the
bonnet stay when the bonnet is closed, avoiding damaging the
       cables or shorting anything out.
