Re: 200TDI into a Series III

Well the weather has been a bit iffy the last two days (We only
ski when the sun shines) so I've had a bit of shed time. This
has led to a couple of questions....
On the Series bulkhead is a resistor on the feed to the glow
plugs, do I need this for the Disgay glow plugs or are they
happy with the full 12 volts?
Are the 200 TDI oil pressure and temperature senders compatible
with the Series gauges?
Is it possible to swap the fuel solenoid in the injector pump
for an 'energise to stop' as opposed to the standard 'energise
to run, or is there a kit to change it to a cable operated 'pull
to stop'?
I come from a marine background where having the engine shut
down due to a minor electrical fault can lead to embarrassment,
or worse!
I also have a Fairy capstan winch, are there any thoughts on
fitting and driving this from the front of the 200 TDI?
All comments, advise and piss taking welcome......
Cheers
Stef

I just have a 12v relay to my glow plugs no resistor, I use the
series temp sender with a Steve Parker adaptor not sure about
the oil as i dont use one. Not sure about the fuel pump but
there is a metric drive dog for the fairy onto a 200tdi
available.

The TDI will start without glow plugs. I would use the tdi glow
plug relay if your going to wire one up. The oil pressure switch
will be ok but not the water temp. As said by Hiipydave, get the
adaptor from Steve Parker. If I can find my spare one I will pm
you and post it down to you. I'm in living in Brittany now.
Not aware of a conversation for the stop solenoid but to be fair
they don't go wrong very often.
How did you get on re drilling the holes on the ladder frame on
the engine? Did you manage to get new bolts ok?

Apparently it is possible to source a mechanical “pull to stop”
replacement for the 12v pump stop solenoid, but I’ve yet to
actually find one. The pump is used on 4 and 6 cylinder Cummins
engines, and the mechanical stop is supposedly a marine fitment.
I’ve been trying to find one for the 6Bt that’s going into my
Austin lorry, but without much (any) luck.

Thanks for the responses, A few more questions...
Dave,
What size relay have you used, I don't have the doner Disgay,
the motor was sourced by a mate of mine, from the look of it
it's been in a Series before.
Thanks for the tip about the metric drive dog, I found it on
Ebay. I've only got the winch it's self so it looks like I'll
have to shell out a few bob for the rest of the bits.
Jimmy,
I did know that the TDI will fire up without the glow plugs, up
here, at 935 metres above, we can get temperatures down to -15
and occasionally -20, every little helps!
We're only 10k from the ski resort of La Mongie- 1800 m, coldest
I seen there was -26.
If you can find the said adaptor I'd be grateful and will send
up a few continental beer tokens by way of exchange.
I've not got the motor in yet, so I'm not sure what you mean by
the ladder bracket.
Glen,
Whilst recovering from last nights excesses I started to search
the web for info on the Bosch VE Pump, amazing how many variants
there are, I think this one is the one I have -0460 414 069 with
a 'push' solenoid (number 240 on the parts list)
HTML http://dieselcatalog.onl
ine/en/bosch/0460/0460414069.html
After much trawling I found this one - 0460 404 022 with a
'pull'
HTML http://dieselcatalog.onl
ine/en/bosch/0460/0460404022.html
There's a couple of extra parts, no's 55, 56, 57, b ut it looks
like they'll slip straight in. After the Festive season I'll do
more and see if it's a viable exchange.
I found no sign of a manual stop.
Today I got rid of the big ally bracket that must have carried
the original alternator and steering pump? and knocked up a new
one from some scraps of steel to take the old Lucas alternator.
Once the thick coat of paint covered my welding it looks almost
professional!
Cheers All
Stef

Sorry, wasn't trying to teach you to suck eggs about the need
for glow plugs. Your right, a bit of help at those temps might
not go a miss.
The tdi engine from a disco has an aluminium ladder bracing to
strengthen the bottom of the engine. You need to drill out the
bottom bolt holes so that the heads are counter sunk otherwise
the strength will be lost and the rear of the engine leaks oil
and cracks can appear. Give me a call on 0604491022 and I will
explain more.

Here’s a link to my Tdi install write-up. The bit about
counterboring the holes in the flywheel housing for the bolts
into the ladder frame is early on.

Hi Glen,
As he said in is post I gave Jim a ring and he put me right,
great post your installation, it'll be a work of reference.
Seasons best to one and all

We took another route for the fitting of the 200 Tdi into the
Series with the original gearbox.
Can't post pics - sorry
Drilled 4 new holes and use the original bolts to fit the thing
as LR planned
Very simple solution

Hi Arjan
When you say 4 new holes do you mean through the bell housing?
I looked at this, but there are no 'bosses' on the outside
(rear) of the bell housing to support the nuts.
Cheers Stef
