       200TDI into a Series III
By: Dieselspanner Date: November 25, 2017, 4:23 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi All
Joining this forum and reading all I can about transplanting
engines is about to become a reality, some time next week I'm
off to the centre of France to pick up a 200TDI from a Disgay,
drag it back to the Pyrenees (where we live) and then jam it
into the hole where the 2 1/4 lived.
Does anyone have any words of warning, or better yet, advice to
       prevent me making any mistakes?
I'm happy to keep it as simple as possible, not looking for the
last ounce of performance or off road power.
       Cheers Stefan

       Welcome, Stefan. ;D
Just put '200tdi install' into the search box, there's quite a
few threads on here about it.
I've done it, and I tried to fit it as Land Rover would have
intended, using the Disgay rad, air cooler, expansion tank etc.
If your Disgay has 10 spline diffs, I'd fit them too.

Very easy with a 200 as everything just fits, you may need to
drill a hole when mating the gearbox up and if you clock the
turbo a wee bit and drill and tap a new hole for the waste gate
but that basicly all i had to alter, it may also be worth
changing the throttle linkage to a cable as this gives smoother
acceleration. And as Kev has said get the diff if avalible as
this alters the ration from 4.7 to 3.54 better suited to the
       power of the engine.

And as an addition it makes sense to add more sound deadening as
the engine is noisier but not un-liverbly so, also softer engine
and gear box mounts make a huge difference to the vibration and
       noise in the cab.

Don't forget to remove the engine - gearbox stud @20 past from
the adaptor plate on the back of the 200 engine and I think
there is a dowel to remove aswell either above or below that
same stud ( can't remember ) had to do this to fit the Def 200
       into my S2a, :smile1
I'm going with the 300 manifolds and turbo as the exhaust is
further away from the bulkhead and the intercooler neck on the
turbo is in a better position to fit the intercooler pipe to
without chopping the inner wing but other than that everything
else is pretty straight forward, hope this helps :smile1

I never had to remove anything from my disgay engine just mated
up, and never had to cut the wing for the manifolds either just
       fitted without fouling anything.

       Hi,
Me? I would hang-fire until May, when all will be revealed about
the MOT exemption for vehicles that are 40 years old (most will,
I think, have to be 41 years old).
The last I heard, they were discussing whether to NOT exempt
vehicles that have been fitted with an engine that gives a more
than a 15% increase in the power-to-weight ratio. If they do
decide to enforce such a restraint, it may not be to difficult
to include VED exempt vehicles. I have no reason to suspect that
they will do this ... apart from it being a way to get a mention
in the New Years Honours lists.

       Hi All
Thanks for the advice and info, doubtless I'll be back for more
support when I cock it all up!
As for the 'New MOT restrictions' that won't be a problem, once
it's all up and running it'll be on French plates. (We run a B&B
down in the Pyrenees - the skiing starts in a few days -
yippie!) Not a complicated process, after 30 years you shift to
'Vehicle de Collection' with a CT (MOT) every 5 years.
       Cheers Stef

I've not converted a series (yet) but did own for a while a
lightweight with a 200Tdi. It was obviously noisier and faster
than a 2.25 petrol but the one thing I really didn't like about
the conversion were the vibrations. If the Disco is a scrapper
then I'd highly recommend you cut the mounts off it. By all
means install with the series mounts for quickness but at least
you can weld the Disco mounts on later if you want.
602, the EU directive that brought about the exemption from
annual testing stipulates 'substantially modified' vehicles must
still be tested. How 'substantially modified' manifests itself
is yet to be seen, however the existing 8 point system seems the
favoured option although the Government themselves mentioned
'...has a power to weight ratio of more than 15% in excess of
its original design" in one of the responses. What they're
presumably trying to do is prevent a 40+ year old motor being
rebuilt as new and used as a daily driver.

       Hi All
Thanks for all the tips and advice, every little helps!
We got the motor from the far side of Breive en Gaillarde, a 5
hour hike to the north and got it into the shed, a 200 + year
old sheep barn at the top of the field.
I'm told it's a good 'un, looking at the rust on the engine
mount bolt holes it's been in a series before, I've no more
history than that. Anyhow it's scrubbed up nicely, both the
crank oil seals have been replaced, as has the water pump and
       the cam belt.
I've squeezed the Landy in, having rearranged the rest of the
'stuff' ('64 BSA A65, '34 Lister genny and the Lord knows what
else I can't bear to part with) and have just about enough room
to get around, I generally work on super yachts so lack of space
       is the norm.
I've rigged a beam to lift the motor - headroom is tight - and
got the rad and the rest of the front end, exhaust and 'top
side' connections out. Next comes the engine mounts and the bell
       housing bolts.
Trouble is the resort is good shape, the slope are virtually
empty and the skiing is great, it's about having two lots of
       cake.......
Seasons greeting to one and all
       Cheers Stef
