Garage/Workshop fire protection
By: RMS Date: September 9, 2017, 3:25 am

Hi guys,
I posted this on a couple of forums about the possibility of a
bulk order of automatic extinguishers.
If anyone is interested, please let me know.
I'm sure I'm not alone in having worries about fire in my barn.
How many of us do grinding/welding and don't keep a 30 minute
fire watch after we've finished to make sure nothing is hidden
and smouldering ? I know I don't!
Some years ago I spotted some automatic extinguishers hanging
from the rafters in a local MOT garage, which looked like a
possible solution.
HTML http://www.rms1.co.uk/landy/fire/12kg.jpg
They look a bit like dumpy gas bottles, and are basically dry
powder extinguishers with glass bulbs which break at around 60C,
setting off the extinguisher, flooding the area under and around
the extinguisher.
I realise dry powder isn't the best thing to cover tools and
parts with, but much better than everything going up in flames,
in my opinion.
I've made some enquiries and there are several factories in
China who supply dealers here, but can't ship them pressurised.
I'm now making enquiries with some UK suppliers, but just
wondered if anyone might be interested in a bulk buy?
I haven't got any firm prices yet, but the bigger ones (10kg,
12kg) retail at around £80, I think.
I'm pretty sure a bulk buy would bring that price down.
How much interest would there be?
Let me know so I have some idea of what negotiating power we
might have.
I'll probably be looking at around 6 or 8 to cover my 72' x 42'
barn, but a more 'normal' size garage/workshop could just need
one or two.
Cheers,
Robin.

After some questions were raised about lifespan etc., I received
this from the supplier:
"Automatic extinguishers require no maintenance as such, except
an annual check that the gauge is still in the Green area, and
we would recommend (although not essential) that the unit is
weighed once a year too, to ensure no powder is leaking out in
the event of a faulty gauge. In practice, leaking powder is very
visible therefore a visual check would be enough.
There is a simple method to test the gauge to ensure its
working.
The units have a 5 year warranty, therefore I would recommend a
replacement after 5 years.
In relation to carriage of pressurized extinguishers, we use a
Parcel Carrier (UK Mail) and a pallet carrier (TPN) who are both
authorised and willing to carry these goods."
The cost for each one would be £69 if we get 20+ orders,
including delivery directly to the end user, saving me
stockpiling them and having folk collect them.
This is quite a saving as they are around £80 retail plus
delivery!
I need to compile a list and send one order off to the supplier
to take advantage of the 20+ discount.
I would need payment before placing the bulk order, but I'll let
everyone know when that is needed - I don't want to be hanging
on to your money for weeks, nor do I want to be placing the
order without receiving payment!
Payment can be made by paypal (if you use friend/family and
accept any charges), bank transfer or cheque in the post.
If you are interested in these, please PM me with your full
name, address and phone number.
Cheers,
Robin.

I'm struggling to get to the 20 minimum order for these - not
sure if it's the price putting folk off ???
To get the discounted price, with delivery directly to you
included, the order has to be completed in one go - we cannot
add extra items on later.
So if you want one, please let me know as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Robin.

Hi guys,
I've now got prices, as follows:
6kg units £50.00 ea
10kg units £59.00 ea
12kg units £69.00 ea
These prices assume we get orders for at least 20 units, and
include postage to your door via specialised courier
(pressurised vessels!).
I've been told the 12kg units are not big sellers, so stock is
limited, so first come - first served for those!
Spec here:
APS6
APS10 APS12
Capacity (kg) 6
10 12
Filled weight (kg) 8.53
13.34 15.66
Diameter (mm) 250
270 290
Height (mm) 264
312 372
Discharge time (s) 20
20 30
Bulb release temp (°C) 68 68
68
Coverage (sq m) 9
15 18
All units include a pressure guage for maintenance.
As they will be delivered directly to you, I will need payment
before ordering, via paypal (if you accept their charges), bank
transfer, cheque in the post or cash in hand.
The order has to be placed in one go to get the discount, so I'm
suggesting a deadline of 1st December.
I hope that's ok with everyone who's interested?
Cheers,
Robin.

Last call for these extinguishers.
Because these will be delivered directly from the manufacturer
to your address, I'll need to send full payment with the order.
I intend placing the order within the next few days, and will
email/message everyone who has ordered.
As soon as all monies are in, I'll place the order.
Cheers,
Robin.

Well, despite having potential orders for 26 units, only 5 folk
have confirmed and sent funds rbchn
I messaged everyone on the list last week, but some folk haven't
got back to me, and others have changed their minds and dropped
out.
I'm ordering 6 for myself, but even with those who have
confirmed and sent money we're still 4 short of the discount
level.
If anyone else is still interested, please let me know ASAP - as
soon as we reach 20 I'll send the order in as it's not really
fair to those who sent money weeks ago to be kept waiting!
Cheers,
Robin.
