       Brake Test light

       Hi everyone,
I've been tidying the electrics of my 1978 S3 and the final
thing to get working is the brake warning / test light on the
center aux switch panel. This does not illuminate when the
       'test' button is pushed.
My first question is are these common on civilian landrovers?
The only wiring diagrams that I could find that include this
       switch are for military models.
I took the switch apart to check the bulb, which was OK, and it
seems a very simple switch. There is 12v on the white wire when
the ignition is on and a good earth on the black wire. Neither
of the black/white wires are grounded. I'm wondering if the
switch is wired wrong - the terminals are labeled 1 - 4, but the
wiring diagram does not say which wire should go to which
       terminal. Anyone know?
The way it works seems to be a positive feed to the bulb and
then 3 switched earths in parallel; either one of which will
complete the circuit and turn the light on, but the wiring
diagram shows them connected together in a loop, which I can't
       figure out the purpose of.
Anyone have any more info on this odd switch?
       Cheers,
       Mark,
       Wellington, NZ.

My '81 s3 has one of these but no test switch. The warning light
in question lights up to confirm all is (should) be working when
the key it turned and the engine cranking (if that makes
       sense).

My 82 SIII had one of these, but again, no test switch. The
switch that activates the lamp is down on the chassis rail,
follow the brake lines down to the chassis from the master
cylinder, you should see a metal (probably very rusty) cylinder
two pipes in, two pipes out. On the bottom of this is a white
plastic switch with two wires. That's the brake failure switch.
To replace all this new is in the region of £300! And, just for
fun, if the switch activates, it generally breaks. I have ripped
it all out, its pretty redundant anyway. For a warning if you
wanted one, you could put a master cylinder cap with a float
like them modern car things, and wire that up to a warning
       light.
Mine used to light up when the engine was cranking too, but it
was so dim that it could really only be seen at night, and to be
honest, I reckon you'd notice the brakes had failed before you
       noticed the light!

My 81 S111 also had one of these, but during the recent chassis
       replacement
and consequent new brake pipes, I took the opportunity to remove
       it.
As far as my understanding goes, it was supposed to light up
when there was a failure of front or rear braking hydraulics.
Went through the MOT ok without any advisories after too 8)
