Gearbox and Diff Lubricants

Hi all
I buy all my lubricants form a wholesaler, and today he had me
doubting that I was using the correct oils in the S2. I use
80W90 GL4 gear oil in the gearbox, transfer, and diffs. I was
told that GL5 is to be avoided. What about SAE 90 (GL4)?
I’d really appreciate your input because I plan never to part
with my Series 2, so I must look after the old girl!

Thanks Pete. What is the O? I’m not familiar with that. Is it
what we have locally called EP 90? (Mine is the last of the
Series 2A’s with the lights in the wings, 1971 year model)
And do I use the same oil in the gearbox, transfer and diffs?

I recall somebody once stating on here that GL5 has a
degenerative effect on the bronzed parts of the Series gearbox
(I'm sure it was this way around and not GL4 the culprit). Which
stands to reason and confirms you're using the wrong stuff if
you have a bronze metallic tinge to oil dropped from the
transmission.
Safest way is to buy it from agri-suppliers or from motor
factors who know what they're selling, insisting on 80w/90 GL4.

I use the gl4 as thats what the motor factors said was best for
a land rover

Agree with what Drew says, GL4 is the stuff to use. I think it
was Albert Ross that told me.
However GL5 should be OK in the diffs & steering box just not in
any of the gearbox bits, so all is not lost if you have loads
of it left.

From what I have seen and been told on other fora, GL5 did
indeed used to attack bronze gearbox bits, but that has since
been rectified and nowadays it is safe to buy and use.

Where does one buy gl4 from these days? I've always used
Halfrauds EP70w90 gl5 because it was all I could lay my hands on
- if I could get some GL4 I'd be inclined to give it go.
Interestingly, Ive also just read on Wikipedia:
