I had a halfshaft go on my '66 109. Nothing exciting, was
braking gently to a stop down hill on a straight road, it had a
wiggle then a loud crack followed. Mine broke on the outer end
by the drive flange. I removed the other side and knocked the
broken length out with a broom handle if I remember rightly.

Got a big hammer and chisel on the drive flange and it came out.
Shaft broke right near the inner end. Spliney bit is jammed in
the diff. Took the diff out and tried knocking it back through
the bearing but it's not going to happen. I think I have also
damaged the bearing assembly with my hefty twatting because it
seems very loose compared to the other side, so I will just
       replace the bearing.
Any gotchas to watch out for with re-assembly? There is not
       much in the haynes book.

I may have a spare diff knocking about somewhere if it helps,
won't be for a week or so though. :)

diff rebuilding is a fine art that needs practice, make sure
everything has engineers blue on it so you can see where all the
cogs are meeting and not as if thety even a wee bit out you will
blow the diff. Best bet is another replacement.

Wish you had told me that before I took it apart!
Looks like I will have to learn to love front wheel drive...

Spent a long time with the drill and various custom drifts
trying to get the spliney end out of the diff. Not looking
promising. I am now driving around with a carrier bag taped
       round my empty rear axle.
If anyone has a replacement diff I can acquire please let me
know - I am not sure how many variants there are but my
halfshafts are ten spline. I have pics of the diff and will try
       to get one uploaded.

You can see the end of the halfshaft still in there. I got it
out quite a bit but now it's properly stuck. It will probably
give in eventually if I persevere with the drill and then twat
       it again.

Decided to get a new diff, Craddock has one for 475 plus vat,
which is a lot of wonga but at least I will have a spare
(eventually). Anyone know of anyone else selling them?

Depending on where in Leics you are, do you use AMD? may be
       worth a call.

Cheers Kev, bought a recon unit from AB 4x4 Cleveland, via ebay.
       Halfshaft from paddock. Fingers crossed!
