       Bit of help diagnosing rear axle problem

       I lost drive on the way to work this morning - had to put it in
       four wheel drive to get going.  When I got to work I was able to
       spin the rear propshaft freely with my hands.  I drove home with
       front wheel drive and jacked up the back end.  With the engine
       running in normal drive mode (i.e. rear wheels) the propshaft
       turns but there is no drive to the wheels.  With the engine off,
       if I spin a wheel I can see the propshaft turn occasionally but
       usually it doesn't.  This is the same for both wheels.
       Anyone want to have a guess what's going on?  Is there some more
       testing I can do?  My next move is to take out the halfshafts
       and check them, but I am limited for time at the weekend so if
       someone can point me in the right direction it would be
       appreciated - also would give me time to buy in the right part.

       Pull the shafts out, it's easy and you can do it without jacking
       it up.
       If you've bust one (prolly the short one) you'll need to have
       the diff out and clean out all the swarf and the broken end.

       Ok, thanks Kev, was just wondering if there was anything else I
       could do to confirm its a halfshaft first. I will whip the short
       one out tonight if I get chance.
       Any reason why the shorter one tends to break? Something to do
       with roundabouts? :)

       I have just had a look at this, the bad news is the short one
       will not come out. It budges about 1/4 inch, no more. I got a
       rope round it and hauled it, no joy. It rotates right round
       though. I had to give up and bolt it back up. Tried the other
       side and it came out dead easy, and it looks ok. What do I do
       now?

       If you can get hold of a suitable sized stout iron bar, take out
       the long halfshaft, and try and bash the broken one out from the
       other side.
       As for the reason the short shafts seem to break easier, I think
       it's the fact that the longer shafts have enough length to be
       able to twist and flex under load, whereas the shorties just
       bust.
       I dunno about roundabouts, have you been driving over them
       instead of around?  ;D

       Is the bar/bash idea going to work? Surely there's a diff in the
       middle? Also I don't understand why it wouldn't just come out if
       it was snapped, seems more like it's jammed in the diff and it's
       the diff that's knackered.  What do you reckon?

       Well, thats how I've done it in the past.
       You can try and take out the diff first, it'll need taking off
       anyroad, - see how you get on.  :)

       Ok thanks Kev, I will have another go at getting the shaft out.
       Not going to be poking the diff too much as it looks like
       replacements are not available.  Still a bit mystified as to
       what is going on in there but I will find out eventually!

       You cant drop the diff till the half shaft is out. As Kev has
       said twat it through from the other side, i have had this happen
       to me and couldnt get the shaft out so ran it for a wee while
       till the diff exploded because of the bit working loose and
       jamming the sun gear and locking up the rear axle :haha:.

       I don't think the explosion thing is going to happen, driven in
       to work again today with it.  I don't understand how I can drive
       miles spinning the back wheels but that shaft won't come loose.
       Will have another look at the weekend, mebbe it will be a bit
       more forthcoming then.  I am wondering now if it is just a
       simple broken shaft and the jam is at the hub end somehow.  This
       is the first time I have even tried to take that short halfshaft
       out in the 25 years I've owned it!
