       Engine running rough and missfiring

       Please help.
My series 2a station wagon with a 6cy Land Rover engine ex a SA
military forward control which had done about 7k
KMs won't tickover running very lumpy and backfiring. The carb
(SU) has been overhauled and set up as per the instructions all
though it came with the engine so no wear. The distributor has
new points and capacitor and rotor arm and timing has been
checked . When fitted it ran reasonably well but lacked in
power. Now no matter what I do I can make no improvement. Could
it be the head casket has failed between cylinders? There are
no bubbles in the water or other obvious signs of failure. I am
at a total loss as to what can be the cause of this

       G'day Les
The Rover 6 cylinder is a beautiful engine albeit a bit thirsty,
but they were prone to exhaust valve failure.
This was mainly due poor maintenance i.e. not adjusted
       correctly.
A compression test will indicate if the head needs to come off
so I would be doing that first.
Another thing to check would the fuel supply.
The problems you describe could also indicate insufficient fuel
       reaching the carby.
       Good luck with it
       Cheers
       Alan

       Hi Parn
After your message decided to bite the bullet and take the head
off. Exhaust valve on No4 knackered and a crack between 3&4 in
the head so guess what I will be doing for the next few days.
