Wont stay in 4WD if in Low Ratio

       Hi All,
After some advice please regarding the 4WD selector yellow knob
       mechanism.
       Series 3 SWB 1981 2.25 petrol.
4WD works fine in high ratio. But if you try selectiong it in
Low Ratio, the knob wont stay down, and 4WD does not engage
(proved this the other day when I was trying to drag this lot
out of my fathers barn up a slippery slope.....)

I found that 4WD would engage in Low Ratio if I held the yellow
       knob down while driving.
Curiously, after removing the floor and tunnel it stays down in
Low Ratio, so is it just a matter of adjusting the spring
       tension?
       Thanks Steve

       Hi Steve
The yellow knob is not supposed to stay down in Low range.
When you select low range in a series transfer case you are in
four wheel drive, there is no choice.
You disengage four wheel drive high range by engaging low range
and then going back to high range.
       cheers
       Alan

As Alan says when you engage low range, it should automatically
go into 4 wheel drive without pushing down the yellow knob. The
selector rods are linked inside the front drive shaft housing so
selecting low range also engages the dog clutch at the same
time. Having literally reassembled that assembly this week it
sounds like there maybe a problem with the pivot mechanism in
front housing or the shafts are stiff which is quite common as
the can seize in the housing.
       I suggest:
       - Whip off the dust cap that covers the end of the shaft, then
try selecting low range. As you move the lever you the rod
connected to the lever will move back and the other large rod
should move forward in the casing. If it doesn't then there is a
problem. Suggest cleaning up the end of the rod and oiling it up
then move it back and forward then try the lever again.
If that doesn't work you may need to have the housing off and
       have a look inside.
