       Refuses to idle nicely
By: pintofale Date: November 18, 2016, 3:39 am

       I'm still having carb/idling trouble - I got distracted by a
dodgy alternator (which could have been the problem but wasn't),
dodgy ignition (powerspark kit fitted, working nicely) and other
       general woes.
I am convinced everything is tuned nicely, it runs really well
and is fairly economical (for a 57 year old petrol Land Rover).
But it will not idle - the revs drop and it stalls.
If I pull out the choke a couple of inches, it idles beautifully
       - slow and smooth. I can drive it like this but it's too rich,
there is smoke and the power is well down, and the economy sinks
       noticably.
I presume it's fuel starved at low revs, but I don't understand
how - I did think the idling jet might be blocked but that
wouldn't be fixed by the choke richening it up.
Anyone got any bright ideas? It's a standard zenith carb.

When this happened to the ambulance (Solex carb, overhauled a
few months earlier by the Carburettor Exchange) it was a simple
fix, the screws that held the body of the carb together had
worked loose - enough to obviously allow air past a gasket
somewhere. I tightened them all up and the problem was solved.
Sounds to me that could be your cause, air being sucked in
somewhere weakening the mixture at idle.

Thanks Noel, I think it's all tight but I will double check, it
       sounds like a good call.

Noel is right there is air being sucked in somewhere and giving
a very lean mixture on idle (hence the stalling).
When you "crack" the main butterfly there is sufficient fuel to
       override the problem.
You could check for wear in the main butterfly shaft and/or the
       throttle body it runs in.
       Hope this helps
       Cheers
       Alan

Does sound like an air leak. In the past I have bored the
throttle spindle position and fitted a bush to restore things.
The spindle is usually OK just the ally body that wears.

I had EXACTLY the same problem with my Series 3 2.25 petrol
Landy with a Zenith 36IV carb.
So I followed the rebuild instructions here
  HTML http://c0007716.cdn2.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/instructions/RNC959I.pdf
particularly sanding / lapping the two carb halves, and it works
       beautifully now....
       Good Luck, Steve

Thanks everyone, I had a quick check for leaks and couldn't see
anything obvious, and top half was clamped on tightly, but I
will try the strip down and resurfacing idea. I know it did
have an overheating problem for a while so that probably makes
       sense.

       Hi,
Pull the idle Jet from side of the carb. Pull jet from it's
hexagon carrier, poke though with a strand of copper electric
       cable, put every thing back.
Remove the volume control screw from bottom of the carb ...
that's the other screw with a spring round it - not the
tick-over screw. Twice I have found a non-removable jet jambed
on the pointed end ... ham fisted PO.

I think it might be an inlet manifold leak, I was not totally
happy with the mainfold-to-manifold seal when stuck it all back
together in the summer, so I will look there first.
