Carb woes

Had an ongoing issue when starting my s3 2.25 petrol up.
When cold and with choke out, unless my foot is on the throttle,
the revs will get so low that it'll eventually stall.
When warm I'd say the idle is a little too quick, so it isn't
the idle screw being too low.
Other symptoms are black smoke, suggesting over fuelling, but
normal with choke out?
Another quirk is when I do start it, it runs great for 5
seconds, then cuts out - only when cold.
Finally, hot starting can sometimes need a few cranks - but that
might just be me not having the knack yet :smilewide:
Ignition side is all new, so i dont think is the problem. It's
a Weber 34 ich. If i do need to have a look in the float
chamber, where can i get a new gasket from?

In lieu of everyone telling you to bin the weber or use it as a
paper weight. i have a couple questions
when you say "choke out" do you mean knob pulled, choke
engaged, i.e choke flap closed ?
if yes, on the side of the carb is a pull down unit, a link rod
between the choke butterfly quadrant and the main accelerator
throttle butterfly, which should increase the idle revs very
slightly when the choke is pulled > engaged.
it also does the opposite, will open the choke flap slightly
when the main throttle is open, it needs this as its a single
barrel carb and would obviously just die because the choke is
completely blocking air passage to the engine
also worth checking that your choke cable is actually working.
when i bought my series 3 the cable was siezed solid to the
outter sheath. its a solid cable core, unlike later vehicles
where its a woven steel rope (like a bike cable)

Cheers for coming back, the Weber works fine so I don't want to
replace it. A new choke cable was fitted as it is the bike
cable type connection that you mention.
I think I'm going to buy a service kit, and rebuild it. And put
a new inline fuel filter on it.
Plus it's kind of smokey when I first start it up, but isn't
smoke when warrm. I presume this is valve stem oil seals?

The Weber 34ICH is prone to icing when cold and, despite what
Weber tell you, utterly unsuited to the series application. On
something like a Ford Escort CVH that takes air from above the
exhaust manifold (i.e. heated) via a thermostatically controlled
flap until warm they're fine.
Over the years I've had several Weber 34ICH carbs on several
different series motors. All have behaved as yours does at idle,
stalling and generally being an arse until warmed up. There's
oodles of stuff on here about carbs if you search, and most of
it points to the same thing. Fit a Zenith 36IV. End of chat.
About 16 years ago I remember having the conversation with the
late Mark Rumsey about the brand new 34ICH I'd fitted to my 109.
Sage words from Mark followed. 'People who fit the 34ICH tend to
think it's a decent enough carb on a series as they are using it
to replace a knackered Zenith or Solex. No-one ever compares one
to a new, perfectly functioning Zenith or Solex so are unaware
how much better the factory spec carbs are." On that advice I
bought a brand new, genuine Zenith 36IV. It's been on FMW for 15
years now and still runs perfectly. I've never touched it since.

guess my 34ICH must be "broken" then, as it doesnt behave like
the thread starters and its been on the vehicle since 1998

"broken", no - atypical experience, arguably yes.
