2.25 Petrol Series III - Runs OK on LPG - Splutters terribly on
Petrol
By: Rob1769 Date: October 8, 2016, 11:45 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Evening all.. long time no posts from me as alas I have been ill
& not used the Series much
I have an issue that started only recently where my Landrover
runs like a sewing machine on LPG however when I switch over as
I do about a mile from my home each time I am out it started to
cough & splutter whilst running to the point where it would cut
out totally if I do not keep loads of 'revs' on the throttle.
I know little re engines but grasp the basics with my thoughts
as below
1 - it must be using the coil / plugs / electronic ignition
system for both LPG & Petrol use so must be 'OK'
2 - it uses the carb to put both fuels into the engine for
combustion to take place
So far I have
1 - changed the coil and plugs to check my theory with no
alteration to the running on petrol
2 - changed the small petrol inline fuel filter ( old one wasnt
mucky or full of dirty fuel
3 - after changing the inline filter pulled up on the priming
lever on the fuel pump to get fuel into the system
Sooooo basically Guy's & Girls with far more knowledge than me
... what the hell is up with it
Thanks in advance

Sounds fuel related; I had exactly the same thing a couple of
years ago, and it turned out to be the in line tap to turn the
petrol off (the one with a solenoid and a manual override) was
coming apart inside and blocking the fuel feed to the
carburettor. Left me stranded with my 2 year old son, in a live
lane, on a viaduct, on the A34 :o
Easy enough to check; just bypass it straight to the carb and
see if that makes a difference to the running on petrol.

Thanks Doug, never thought of that.. superb idea, I will do it
tomorrow and get back to you :giddy:

If after doing as Doug suggested there is no improvement it must
be carburettor related.
Give it a strip down and a good clean out
Good luck

Cheers Parn... however alas it would never work again....

Gotten me to thinking... as I am not 'engine technical' when
running on LPG does it not use the carb as it would when
running on petrol /??

Progress so far --
1 Took off the glass bowl adjacent to the fuel pump to ensuer
all was ok ( no crud or gunk _ I got doused with clean petrol )
so I assume fine
2 Bypassed the LPG / Solenoid valve ( inline on petrol supply
)
3 Disconnected fuel pipe from engine mounted pump and belw
backwards with air hoes ( all clear )
Took for a run no better - cuts out and chugs like buggery as
if it is starved of fuel
I guess the next step it to take cte carb appart ?? ( I know
that will end in tears & not go back together again ) !!!!

LPG uses the vaporizer and mixer ring (sitting upstream of the
carb) to create the fuel / air mix. The only thing the
carburettor does in this instance is provide the throttling from
the butterfly valve.
Another thing you could check is the fuel pump delivery while
the engine is running. Switch to LPG, and turn the engine off.
Disconnect the line from the fuel pump to the carb and put it
into something milk bottle sized. Start the engine and fuel
should spurt out of there quite nicely (mine will fill a milk
bottle in around a minute just at idle). If it just dribbles out
then your fuel pump is suspect.
Also, check the fuel pickup in the tank, particularly the gauze
on the end. Even though you've blown it through it may have
collapsed, got caked in crud, and be getting sucked against the
pipe starving the flow.

Doug T ... yet another brilliant idea ! tomorrow job me thinks
now.... I did wonder if the pump would continue to deliver
petrol when switched to LPG but....(of course it will --- it is
only stopped electrically at the petrol solenoid cut off valve)
Tomorrow job.. will have to drink a pint of milk first !

What carb do you have? The rubber 'O' ring in the centre of a
Zenith has a tendency to perish and running on LPG tends to make
this happen a little quicker than it would on petrol. One of
mine on LPG did that and ran like a dog. Once you've pulled the
carb apart to check that replace all the gaskets. Again, running
on LPG can cause them to shrink. Finally, make sure the carb is
actually screwed together snugly. I suffered terrible running on
a '66 2A with a Solex on a recently professionally rebuilt carb,
the cause was simply the screws that held it all together had
worked loose letting air past a gasket.

Hi Noel,
Its a Zenith Carb, I havnt dared take it off yet never mind
apart !! it would end up a pile of bits on the kitchen table,
I do keep looking at the repalcement ( copy carbs) on thief bay
but I would imagine that they are 'poor' ?
