       Lights & gear level gaiter

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi everyone,
Things have been quiet for me on the landrover front in the past
couple of weeks - I've had no major jobs to do and had to resort
to washing it, just to find a job. The dog did try and help out
by taking some chunks out of the fairly new rear bench seats
when I left him in there for a couple of minutes - but I'm more
inclined to get the dog fixed than the seats.
I've been reading through some of the restoration threads which
has given me a reminder to post a couple of mods on my S3 - one
I did myself and one by a PO.
First is the lights. I needed to replace the side lights,
indicators and stop/tail lights. I bought a set of Wipac lights
as these were described as 'OEM', so I thought the quality would
be OK. They turned out to be complete crap. The part of the
light that holds the bulb is made of very soft plastic which
results in the bulbs not being held in properly. A brake light
bulb came out completely and was sitting in the lens. Getting
quite grumpy about constantly having to refit bulbs and trying
different things to try and wedge them in place, I had a rummage
through my boxes of bits. I found an old rear light loom from a
Holden Commodore (4-door Vauxhaul Monaro) that I owned a while
ago. This has proper metal bulb holders, but of course don't
fit landrover lights - so I set about trying to mate the two
together. It turned out to be surprisingly simple and the
       results were great.
First step was to disassemble the Wipac light unit to just the
white plastic shell. Then cut the back off and remove the
       contacts and spring.

After filing the tabs off the Holden light holder, it was a push
       fit into the Wipac light.

This leaves the light looking stock, but has a quality mechanism
       to hold the bulb.

I went out and bought another second-hand loom and did the other
side - brake light, indicator and side light.
Secondly, I have only recently realised that the gear level
gaiter is not a standard item. It looks really good -

It has 'Dektite' written on it, and is a flashing for putting
pipes through metal roofs. I think it works even better as a
       gaiter.
       Cheers,
       Mark,
       Wellington, NZ.

Good that things on a series motor can be upgraded with very
       little effort.
